Chapter 45: The Bearers of Chaos
The library fell silent again.
Only the sound of turning pages could be heard.
Aurelion found another manuscript.
Older.
Much more deteriorated.
He opened it carefully.
"I think... this talks about the Bearers."
Kael stopped fighting with the Fat King for a moment.
"In plural?"
"Yes."
Seraphina looked up.
"There were more?"
Aurelion nodded slowly.
"Many more."
The atmosphere changed immediately.
Kael approached.
The manuscript contained names.
Many names.
Some incomplete.
Others completely erased by time.
But they all shared the same phrase.
"Bearer of Chaos."
Silence.
Kael swallowed.
"So...
I’m not the first."
Aurelion shook his head.
"No.
And you probably won’t be the last."
Kael looked at the names.
There were dozens.
More than he expected.
They all disappeared after a few lines.
There were no records of their deaths.
No graves.
Just...
Disappeared.
"How strange..."
Seraphine continued reading.
"None left known descendants.
None founded a family.
None appear in later records."
Kael sighed.
"They probably went crazy."
The other two looked up.
"Why do you say that?"
Kael pointed at the Fat King.
"Imagine carrying him around for a lifetime.
I’d disappear too."
The Fat King opened one eye.
"Meow."
"Don’t look at me like that.
I’m being objective."
The cat kept watching him.
Kael continued.
"One can handle a week.
Two weeks.
But decades?
Impossible."
Aurelion smiled.
"That’s a valid point."
Kael started walking around the cat.
"Imagine waking up every day...
And having to carry this royal sack of fat."
The Fat King narrowed his eyes.
"Meow."
"Then you have to buy him food.
Find him a place to sleep.
Negotiate with him to save your life.
And on top of that...
Get slapped for existing."
The cat’s ears began to move.
Very slowly.
Seraphina watched the scene.
"I think he’s getting annoyed."
"Perfect.
He can get in line."
Kael kept talking.
"I’m sure the second Bearer disappeared because he developed back problems.
The third died trying to wake him up.
The fourth ended up becoming a professional butler.
The fifth simply renounced humanity.
And the sixth opened a fish shop to cover his expenses."
Aurelion was no longer trying to hide his laughter.
"That’s... surprisingly possible."
Kael wasn’t finished.
"Then another one came along.
He thought: ’This time will be different.’
And five minutes later, he was carrying ten kilos of sleeping cat.
Disappeared."
The Fat King stood up.
Slowly.
Very slowly.
Kael kept going.
"I’m sure the seventh wrote: ’Dear family. I can’t come back. The cat doesn’t want to walk.’"
"Meow."
"The eighth...
Never finished the letter because he was buying fish."
"Meow."
"The ninth...
No longer even remembered his own name. He only responded when someone said: ’Servant.’"
The Fat King’s ears were fully perked up.
Aurelion started backing away.
"I think he’s had enough."
Seraphina also took a small step back.
Only Kael didn’t notice.
"And then there’s me.
The tenth idiot.
Condemned to serve as official transportation for the laziest feline on the continent."
Silence.
The Fat King disappeared.
"Huh?"
WHAP.
Kael received a slap directly to the forehead.
"AAAAH!"
WHAP.
Another one.
"WAIT!"
WHAP.
Another.
"IT WAS A HYPOTHESIS!"
The cat landed on his head.
Dug all four paws in.
And started hitting him with both front paws.
WHAP.
WHAP.
WHAP.
WHAP.
"HELP!!"
Kael started running through the entire library.
"HE’S TRYING TO KILL ME!"
The Fat King stayed on top.
Every time Kael tried to remove him...
He received another slap.
"STOP HITTING ME!"
"IT WAS A JOKE!"
"I DIDN’T MEAN TO SAY YOU’RE FAT!"
Pause.
"WELL, YOU ARE FAT!"
WHAP.
"AAAAAAAH!"
Aurelion crossed his arms.
Smiling.
"Honestly...
They get along so well."
Kael turned his head while still running.
"IN WHAT UNIVERSE IS THAT GETTING ALONG!?"
Aurelion pointed at the cat.
"He could have erased you from the map.
And he’s just hitting you.
That shows a lot of self-control."
"THAT’S NOT REASSURING!"
Meanwhile...
Seraphina watched the scene.
Completely still.
Her eyes sparkled.
Completely different thoughts ran through her head.
"How adorable..."
"They’re playing."
"The Fat King never does that with anyone else."
"He must trust Kael a lot."
"What a beautiful friendship..."
She began storing every moment in her memory.
Kael running.
The cat on top.
The slaps.
The screams.
Everything.
"I need to remember this forever."
Kael ran past her.
"SERAPHINA!"
She smiled softly.
"You two look so happy."
"WE’RE NOT HAPPY!"
"I think you are."
"HE’S ASSAULTING ME!"
"It’s his way of showing affection."
"WHO TAUGHT YOU THAT!?"
"The Fat King himself."
The cat let out a proud:
"Meow."
Kael felt completely alone.
Five minutes later...
He ended up sitting on the floor.
Disheveled.
Covered in tiny paw prints.
And with the Fat King peacefully lying on his head.
As if nothing had happened.
Aurelion smiled.
"He’s done now."
"How kind.
He only tried to murder me a little."
Seraphina crouched in front of them.
She looked at the cat.
Then at Kael.
"I think he’s made peace with you."
"PEACE?"
"He’s sleeping on you."
Kael slowly looked up.
It was true.
The Fat King was already asleep.
Completely relaxed.
As if Kael’s head were a pillow.
"..."
"I hate him."
"Meow."
"And he hates me too."
Aurelion shook his head.
"No.
If he really hated you..."
He paused.
"He wouldn’t be sleeping somewhere he can let his guard down."
Kael stopped talking.
He had never thought of it that way.
The Fat King never slept near strangers.
He always chose places where no one could bother him.
And now...
He was using his head as a bed.
Seraphina smiled.
"He trusts you."
Kael looked away.
"I guess...
That’s good."
Silence returned.
It only lasted a few seconds.
Because Aurelion went back to the manuscript.
And his expression changed.
All amusement disappeared.
"I found the ending."
Kael looked up.
"The ending of what?"
"Of the Bearers."
Aurelion’s smile had completely vanished.
He read slowly.
"No Bearer was defeated by their entity.
None died betrayed.
They all disappeared trying to prevent the arrival of the next one."
The room fell completely silent.
Even the Fat King opened one eye.
Aurelion turned the page.
It was blank.
Only one last sentence was written in the center.
"When the Second arrives... time will begin to move again."
At that very moment...
A blue window appeared before Kael.
[Estimated arrival: 36 hours.]
Below it appeared a new line that hadn’t been there before.
[The Second Entity has responded to the user’s investigation.]
[Waiting for the moment of manifestation.]
Kael felt a chill run down his spine.
It was no longer just curiosity.
It was the feeling that something...
Had been watching them this whole time.
