Chapter 28: Call it scam or whatever

Stefan’s POV

DING!

The System’s notification sound woke me up, and the first thing I felt was how relaxed my whole body felt. My bones and muscles were thanking me for a good rest.

"How many hours did I sleep for to feel this good?" I wondered inwardly as my eyes fluttered open.

It felt like evening. Maybe midnight at worst. I blinked at the tent ceiling, disoriented, and when the System flashed the time in the corner of my vision, I actually sat up straight.

"It’s morning already?"

Yeah, it was. Full morning. I didn’t know I had slept through half a day and an entire night like a man with zero problems in his life.

Okay, I wasn’t even that surprised, honestly.

"My body is just taking what it’s owed," I muttered, flopping back down for one more second of peace.

Back on Earth I never had a real job, unless you counted conning bored rich women out of their husbands’ money as a full time employment, and that kind of work let you sleep in whenever you wanted. Old habits.

My lips curved into a satisfied smile.

"Now, this is how to live..." I muttered, all smiles. Then the System dropped the daily tasks, and my peace evaporated on the spot.

[DAILY TASKS:]

- Fruit fast until 6PM — +200 AP

- Run with a warrior for 5 minutes — +200 AP

- Do not sleep until midnight — +1,000 AP

I stared at the list like it had personally insulted my mother, my nose scrunching up in disgust.

"What is this?" I said out loud, to nobody. I didn’t care who heard or who didn’t. I just needed to get the annoyance out of me by throwing out the question.

No response from the system. Of course not.

"Dude, I am good with my weight!" I yelled at the direction of the system notification where the tasks were still displaying.

I was glaring at the notifications now, genuinely offended.

"I have never once had a body build problem in my life! Do you know how many women complimented my abs before I died? And now you want me to fruit fast until six?"

"Dude, what the heck is wrong with you?"

Still, I got nothing in response.

"And no sleep until midnight?" My voice cracked with the sheer injustice of it. "I love sleeping, man. Sleeping is my one skill. It is the thing I am best at on this entire planet, and you want to take it from me?"

I narrowed my eyes at the air, working it out loud the way I always did when the System’s cruelty needed a theory behind it.

"This is about the debt, isn’t it." I pointed at nothing. "You are punishing me because of the loan. That is what this is. You are going to work me like a mule until I pay off the Life Ember, aren’t you-"

The tent flap moved and the sudden interruption killed the words in my throat.

Zinnia stepped in, wearing her usual stoic, calm, unreadable appearance, and looked at me with the specific patience of a woman who had walked in on a man arguing with the air.

"May I know why you are shouting?" she asked flatly.

I knew she was just being herself but because I was already irritated, the formality of her tone angered me further. I wanted to retort a response but before I could even open my mouth, the System interrupted, because apparently my dignity meant nothing to it.

[SIDE MISSION ASSIGNED.]

[Recruitment Candidate registered: Zinnia.]

[Make Zinnia ask your name.]

[TIME LIMIT: 5:00:00]

[REWARD: +200 EXP.]

I almost laughed. Out loud. In her face.

Make her ask my name? That was it? That was the whole mission? My gee, I would have this wrapped up before she even finished blinking. I opened my mouth, ready to charm her into asking with something smooth, something that would make her curious enough to want to know exactly who she was dealing with-

She turned and started walking away.

"Wait-" I lunged after her, reaching for her arm.

I didn’t even remember the middle part. One second I was upright, reaching, and the next I was flat on my back in the dirt, the wind gone from my lungs, staring up at the tent ceiling for the second time that morning, except this time with considerably more pain involved.

[HOST STATUS: Too Weak.]

I groaned. "Would you stop poking your nose into everything," I hissed at the ceiling, at the System, at whoever was listening. "I didn’t even ask for a review."

"Weak or whatever, it isn’t your business!" I thought inwardly and gnashed, not wanting the woman to hear me talking to the system notification she couldn’t see.

Zinnia stood over me, looking down with the same calm expression she always wore, like flipping a grown man onto the ground was as routine as pouring tea.

"Were you challenging me?" she asked as gently as possible that I almost missed the anger that was simmering in her eyes.

Challenge a warrior? And not just any warrior but a second in command?

I quickly opened my mouth to say no. Obviously no. I was on the ground. I had clearly lost whatever this was before it even started.

The System dinged before the word could leave my mouth.

[HIDDEN MISSION UNLOCKED.]

[Challenge Zinnia to a duel. Win.]

[REWARD: +5,000 AP.]

[Accept / Decline]

My jaw actually fell open.

"5, 000?"

Five thousand AP, for a duel I would obviously lose in nine seconds, against a woman who had just put me on my back without breaking a sweat, still standing over me like she was waiting for an answer to a question I hadn’t answered yet.

I stared at the notification. Then at Zinnia... And something brilliant, absolutely hit me.

My lips curved up into a very big smile.

I was going to win that 5,000 AP without any fighting duel. Call it scam or whatever...
