Chapter 64: [64] "The Tiki-Taka Trap"
Saturday. Cup football.
Stade Valois under the floodlights with a crowd that had come to watch their team dismantle the opposition.
Lyon B arrived in two buses. Not one. Two. All their staff, all their analysts, even their kit men came with them. A first-division budget crammed inside a second-division operation, confidence that came with leading Ligue Beta since September.
Their manager was a spectacle wearing Frenchman named Picot who had given an interview to a Lyon newspaper some days ago. "Dominant possession" his favourite word.
[System Notification]
[Objective: Score twice. The wager clock doesn’t pause for cup football, but the momentum you build here carries.]
[Reward: +4 General Points, +4 Skill Points]
[Penalty: If Valois concede first, Luc Beaumont will hit the post 5 times in 5 clean chances before a goal. Fontaine will be delighted.]
"He actually would be."
---
Henri gathered the starting eleven in the locker room with his whiteboard covered in red arrows.
"They’ll try to possess you into submission," Henri said. "They’ll be patient. Their two center-backs will hold the ball at the edge of their own half and wait for you to press."
"We don’t," Luc said.
"Correct. Mid-block. Hold the shape. We wait for the vertical pass into their holding midfielder and we collapse on their play." Henri tapped the board twice. "Beaumont runs point on the press. Hugo and Mateo close the second and third lanes."
Mateo pulled on his captain’s armband. "And when we win it?"
"Two passes maximum. Transition fast, before they reset."
Idriss cracked his knuckles beside his locker. "I’ll be in the channel."
"You’d better be," Luc said.
---
Piii.
The match began on the dry Stade Valois pitch.
Lyon B played exactly as Henri predicted they would.
Their center-backs received from the goalkeeper and passed sideways. Right to left. Left to right. Patient, horizontal circulation, asking SC Valois to break formation and chase.
SC Valois didn’t chase.
The mid-block held. Twenty-six thousand people in the stands went quiet with confusion as their team dropped off and invited possession. Some of them started muttering.
Minute nine. Lyon B’s right center-back received the ball for the seventh time. He had done what comfortable center-backs always do when pressure disappears, he had started looking forward.
He played the vertical pass.
Into the holding midfielder’s feet, twenty yards ahead of him, exactly the lane Henri had identified.
Luc was already moving before the center-back’s foot connected with the ball. He had read the weight shift in the center-back’s standing foot a full half-second before the pass launched.
He intercepted it at pace, his hip-turned, and he drove forward.
Two Lyon B midfielders sprinting back. Their defensive line scrambling to reset from the pushed-up positions their possession system required.
Luc to Hugo. Hugo split them down the middle with a first-time pass before the second Lyon midfielder arrived.
Luc was through. One center-back left, positioned centrally, committed to the covering lane.
He didn’t slow down. He ran straight at the defender, drawing the commitment, then rolled the ball left with the outside of his right boot in the last stride.
The defender went right. The ball went left.
Luc’s left foot met it at the edge of the six-yard box.
Bottom corner.
1-0.
Nine minutes. First vertical pass Lyon B had attempted.
The stadium woke up.
Lyon B’s bench was immediately animated, Picot waving his arms and pointing at his center-backs, furious at the loss of the ball in the position he had told them was safe.
Because it had always been safe.
It had been safe in Ligue Beta for three months.
SC Valois were not a Ligue Beta team.
---
Minute fourteen.
Lyon B tried to adjust. Their holding midfielder dropped deeper, sitting between the two center-backs to receive the ball in a more protected position.
It made them more careful. More lateral. "More harmless."
And it left the space in front of the holding midfielder completely uncovered.
Hugo arrived into that space on minute sixteen, a ghost between the lines, with the ball at his feet and only the Lyon B midfielder between him and the two center-backs.
He didn’t rush it.
He played it wide right to Aubert, who had been bombing forward all match without a cross to show for it.
There was a cross this time. It was early and low.
Idriss arrived at the near post a yard ahead of the Lyon B center-back.
The contact was clean. Angled toward the far post.
The keeper got fingertips to it.
But fingertips against that much pace at that angle produced only one outcome.
2-0.
Lyon B’s shape had already started coming apart at the seams by minute twenty.
Picot made a tactical substitution at the twenty-third minute, pulling his holding midfielder and sending on a more physical version in a hybrid 4-3-3 pressing structure. He was asking his team to press higher, to stop letting SC Valois dictate the transition.
Luc read the substitution from the center circle.
"They’re pressing now," Hugo said, jogging past him.
"Good," Luc said. "More space behind them for me."
---
Minute twenty-eight.
Lyon B pressed high from a goal kick. Their two wide forwards and their three midfielders formed a wall across the SC Valois half.
Blažek played it long, bypassing the entire press, dropping the ball toward Luc’s chest forty yards from goal.
He brought it down with one touch, his First Touch Under Pressure absorbing the ball from the air and to his feet without bounce.
The Lyon B midfielder arrived a second behind the touch.
Luc spun off the press, one movement, the ball already rolling into Hugo’s path.
Hugo played it forward to Idriss in the space he ran into.
Idriss drove at the center-back, cut inside, and pulled the trigger from eighteen yards.
Low and hard into the post.
The keeper got his left hand across in full extension, but couldn’t reach the shot in time.
3-0.
The stadium noise elevated. The fans recognized what was happening as something clinical rather than fortunate.
---
The half-time whistle blew with SC Valois leading 3-0.
The team had just executed a tactical plan with complete precision. Henri came in, looked at the whiteboard, looked at his players, and wrote a single number on the board.
4.
"Minimum," he said.
Luc drank from his water bottle and thought, "more than four."
