Chapter 85: Chapter

Wenzhe’s expression hardened, and he immediately pulled his hand back from the food tray, his voice turning cold and dismissive.

"What does that have to do with me?" Wenzhe snapped, turning his back on them. "Why are you telling me this? The two of you should leave. It’s already late, and I need complete silence for my work. Take the food along with you, I’m not hungry."

Yunhao and Yunchen both exchanged worried, knowing looks. Yunhao, always the more outspoken one, opened his mouth and was about to argue, ready to tell his brother how stubborn he was being.

But before a single word could escape Yunhao’s lips, Yunchen quickly slapped his hand over his brother’s mouth, cutting him off completely.

"As you wish, Big Brother!" Yunchen said loudly, flashing a nervous, compliant smile.

Without letting go, Yunchen forcefully dragged the muffled, protesting Yunhao toward the exit. He gave a sharp nod to the servants, signaling for them to pick up the trays and bring the food right back out.

Within moments, the study doors closed shut, leaving Wenzhe completely alone in the heavy silence of the night.

....

Later that night, the heavy silence of the estate deepened, but inside Mingyu’s room, a warm and peaceful glow filled the space. Several lanterns were softly lit, casting long, gentle shadows across the floor where Su Yueqing had laid out a small, comfortable makeshift bed for herself right on the ground next to the boy’s couch.

The little boy was sleeping soundly, his breathing steadier than it had been in months.

Su Yueqing quietly walked over to his side, kneeling down on the soft rugs. She gently took his tiny wrist between her fingers, checking his pulse with a focused, professional calmness. As she felt the rhythm of his heartbeat, she began discussing his condition in a low whisper with Nine, her systematic helper.

[His pulse is much stronger tonight, Nine,] she noted in her mind, a small wave of relief washing over her. [The modern nutrient fluids and the targeted anti-inflammatory medicine I slipped into his tea have completely cleared the fluid blockages in his lungs. His fever is completely gone. If we keep up this exact treatment routine, his health will improve quite soon.]

Mingyu looked entirely different than he had the day before. He was completely clean, his pale skin glowing faintly under the lantern light. Su Yueqing had personally given him a warm sponge bath and changed him out of his heavy, sweat-soaked medical garments and into a cute, soft pink robe that made him look like a healthy, adorable little dumpling.

She then picked up a small wooden comb, gently detangling his soft hair, before applying a fragrant, soothing herbal oil to his scalp to help him relax further into his sleep.

[Look at him,] she thought, gently tucking the blanket up to his chin. [He’s just a baby. That block-of-wood general might be an executioner in the future, but this little kid is completely innocent. I won’t let him die under my watch.]

Just then, a loud, long GRUMBLE echoed right from the depths of her stomach, shattering the peaceful silence of the room.

Su Yueqing froze, her hand still holding the wooden comb as she immediately pressed her palm against her treacherous, empty belly.

[Oh, shut up,] she hissed internally, her face flushing with embarrassment even though she was completely alone.

Right on cue, Nine’s cheerful, synthetic voice chimed in inside her head, practically dripping with digital sarcasm.

[Ding! System scan detects a critical levels of starvation, Host. For a villainess who claims she is going to conquer the world and make everyone despise her, you are currently being defeated by a total lack of dinner.]

[I was busy!] Su Yueqing snapped back in her mind, setting the comb down on the side table. [I had to sanitize the medical equipment, check his vitals every hour, and give this kid a bath. How was I supposed to think about food?]

[Of course, Host,] Nine teased playfully, the system’s internal notification sound letting out a tiny, amused ping. [But if the great and terrifying Su Yueqing faints from hunger right next to the male lead’s little brother, it might ruin your fierce reputation. Should I calculate the exact amount of calories you missed by skipping the family meal?]

[Keep talking, Nine, and I’ll find a way to virus-scan you into oblivion,] she grumbled, standing up stretching her aching, tired back.

She looked longingly at the locked wooden doors of the courtyard. Her stomach let out another angry protest, reminding her that she hadn’t eaten a single thing since she this morning.

But just then, before she could even take a step toward the door, her nose picked up a very familiar, sweet, and utterly mouth-watering aroma wafting through the cool night air.

Su Yueqing sniffed the air, her eyes widening. [Is that... roasted duck and fresh osmanthus cake?]

Following her stomach’s desperate commands, she tracked the delicious smell straight toward the room’s wooden window. But before she could even reach out to unlatch it, the window panes suddenly dashed open from the outside with a soft creak.

Su Yueqing gasped, stumbling backward as a tall figure awkwardly scrambled through the narrow frame. Sneaking into his little brother’s room in the dead of night like a common thief, carrying a wrapped silk parcel of food, was none other than General Wenzhe.

The two of them froze, utterly shocked to see each other standing face-to-face. Wenzhe, caught entirely red-handed with his long legs halfway through a window he had no business climbing, completely lost his footing on the slick wooden sill.

"What the—" Su Yueqing squeaked.

With a sudden gasp, Wenzhe pitched forward. He tried to catch his balance, but his massive frame crashed straight into Su Yueqing, sending them both tumbling onto the soft, makeshift bed she had laid out on the ground.

Thud!

Wenzhe landed heavily right on top of her, his hands pinning her shoulders to the floor to brace his fall, while the wrapped food parcel rolled away onto the rugs. Su Yueqing’s breath was knocked completely out of her, her wide, startled eyes staring directly into his equally stunned dark ones, their faces only inches apart in the dim lantern light.
