Chapter 50: Chapter 50: Realizing the truth
Evelyn’s POV
Realization came crashing down on me hard, like a huge tidal wave that I couldn’t outrun no matter how hard I tried. In an instant, the world tilted, and it felt like my heart had stopped entirely.
The room fell silent, my mind was a hurricane of thoughts and endless questions I had no answers to.
Removing my fallopian tubes? Surgery? What the hell was going on?
For a moment, Rhys was simply staring at me with his wide dark eyes, concern etched into his features. "What?" His worried voice snapped me out of my spiraling thoughts. "What did you just say? You mean you didn’t...but how?" He trailed off, the unspoken words hung in the air, almost as if he was too afraid to finish the sentence.
I watched as he slowly straightened in his chair. "The doctor said it was in your medical records."
I shook my head frantically. "No." My breathing became uneven. "No, that’s impossible. It can’t be."
"Then why would it be in your records?"
"I don’t know!" The words came out sharper than intended. Immediately, I pressed a hand against my forehead, my brows knitting together as a look of confusion crossed my features. "No one ever told me anything about removing my fallopian tubes."
"Evelyn..."
My face had gone completely pale by now, the blood drained from my skin, and the horror in my eyes was unmistakable. "I never had that surgery," I repeated, my voice trembling this time. "I...I..."
The words remained stuck in my throat as my mind frantically recalled everything that had happened in the last few years. But nothing came to my mind. The only surgery I ever had was the C-section when I had Kayla. All I knew was that I cried the entire week after the doctors told me that it would be difficult for me to conceive again, given the traumatic birth I went through.
I believed them. I believed every single word they had said back then. After all, they were doctors, they were the professionals in their field, and I trusted them. This had to be some kind of mistake. Maybe Rhys had misheard, or maybe there was some kind of misunderstanding, or maybe...
"Evelyn, talk to me," Rhys urged beside me, his tone pleading as he reached for my hands. "What happened?"
"I...I don’t know." My head was hurting as my heart pounded against my chest. "Are you sure you heard it right? I mean, I never had any of such surgery. You know I wouldn’t do that, right? You know how much I wanted to have children and how much I wanted to start my own family."
Hot tears began to sting my eyes, threatening to spill any moment now. Then, a single stray tear broke free, rolling down my flushed cheek. Before I knew it, Rhys was on his feet as he pulled me into his arms. I let myself bury my face in his torso, sobbing silently as he gently patted my back in reassurance.
"I know, Eve, I know," he murmured, and more tears spilled from my eyes as I continued to cry till I had no more tears left.
Silence wrapped around us as he held me in his embrace. His words were kind, and his touch was gentle. Then it suddenly clicked in my head.
I had always trusted the doctor’s words. They didn’t give me a reason to doubt them, it had to be true. Unless...they had been lying to me this whole time. And only one person popped into my mind.
Lucas.
A gasp erupted from my throat, and a chill ran down my spine. Could it be him? But why? I pulled away from the hug and lifted my gaze to lock eyes with Rhys, who already had his eyes fixed on me.
"Lucas," his name left my lips.
Rhys arched a brow at me, a puzzled look etched onto his face. "What? Are you saying that he was the one who did this to you?"
"I...I think maybe he had something to do with this," I finally said as I let out a breath. "Maybe he did something to me that I wasn’t aware of."
I watched as Rhys’ expression darkened before my eyes. His voice may have been calm, but the fury that was swirling in his dark eyes was undeniable. My gaze bounced from his fists that were clenched tightly beside him, then back to his eyes.
"He did this to you?" His voice shook with anger as he clenched his jaw. For a while, he didn’t say anything. Before I knew it, he was turning away from me. "I’m going to make him pay for this," he muttered under his breath.
He had merely taken a step when my hand reached out towards him, letting my fingers curl around his forearm as I held him back.
"Rhys, where are you going?"
He whipped his head around, and his expression softened the moment his gaze landed on me. "I need to talk to Lucas."
I tightened my grip on his arm and shook my head lightly. "Don’t do it."
"Why? He did this to you, Eve."
"I don’t know for sure," I admitted. "It was just a guess. What if I was wrong?"
His response was immediate as his expression hardened. "I won’t put it past him to do something so cruel."
"I know, but let’s not be impulsive. We need evidence first. If you look for him now, he will know that we are aware, and it would only give him more time to cover his tracks and destroy any evidence," I reasoned, and watched his eyes light up with understanding.
A muscle twitched in his jaw, but he nodded. "You are right." He reached for my hands again, so naturally that I almost forgot that we weren’t exactly a couple. "I was too rash. But don’t worry, if I find out that he’s the one behind this, I will never let him off so easily."
A slight smile tugged at my lips. I had always known that Rhys would have my back, he would be on my side no matter what. "I know."
"So where should we begin?"
"Back at the hospital where I had Kayla."
