Chapter 47: Chapter 47: Divorcing my scum husband
The second the words tumbled out of my lips, a slow smirk spread across Lucas’s face.
"Good," he remarked before his gaze flickered to Rhys, a taunting smile tugged at the corners of his lips. "Don’t worry, she’s in good hands."
I watched as Rhys narrowed his eyes into thin slits, pinning my very soon-to-be ex-husband with a vicious glare. "If you dare to lay even a finger on her, I will make sure you regret it," he warned, threat oozing from his voice as his fists clenched tightly beside him.
Lucas merely huffed in satisfaction before turning around and gesturing for me to follow. I gave Rhys a quick reassuring smile before trailing along behind Lucas.
The entire walk there was silent, neither of us saying a word, and I didn’t feel the need to fill the silence with mindless small talk, especially not when it came to someone like Lucas. But I could feel the tension simmering in the air between us, like it was ready to explode any time now.
It didn’t take too long before we arrived at a quaint little cafe at the corner of a busy street in Brooklyn. A few customers bustle in and out of the door, the little bell above it jingling every now and then.
He was the first to enter the cafe. I followed behind him quietly and watched as he ordered himself a cup of espresso before we eventually settled at one of the empty tables in the far corner of the cafe.
I tapped my feet against the ground, leaning back into the wooden chair with my arms folded over my chest. I didn’t waste any time beating around the bush, nor was I interested in sitting here watching him slowly sip away at his coffee.
"So are you going to sign the papers or what?"
He lifted his gaze to meet my eyes as he slowly set the cup of piping hot coffee down on the table between us. A slow smile spread across his face. "Straight to the point, aren’t we?"
My expression hardened as I stared at him, a slight smirk tugging at the corners of my lips. "I don’t like wasting time on useless things," I responded curtly, which seemed to delight him somehow.
He casually leaned back into his chair, his stance relaxed as he had one arm propped on top of the back of the chair. The smile was still lingering on his lips when he spoke. "What’s the rush? I’ll sign it eventually. Can’t you let me enjoy my cup of coffee in peace?"
A loud scoff escaped my lips as I rolled my eyes. "What’s the rush?" I echoed his words. "I simply don’t wish to spend more unnecessary time with you. If you recall, my boyfriend is waiting for me outside. We have a dinner date."
He let out a huff, the hand that was resting on the table was now clenched tightly. He leaned over the table, half his body hanging over the tiny table that separated us. "Do you seriously think he likes you? Trust me, he will leave you someday when he gets bored with you."
"He won’t. He loves me," I replied smoothly, my answer seemed to catch him off guard. "He and I are way past ’like’ now."
A muscle tic in his jaw as his eyes were narrowed into thin slits. His voice dropped lower, and his expression darkened. "He will never love you as much as I do. You will regret it one day."
Ain’t it funny? He wants Jessica, constantly choosing her over me for the last seven years. Yet he was also unhappy that I moved on and found someone else. Men like him were the worst.
I raised a brow at him, amused by the absurdity in his statement. I had almost laughed out loud. "Oh, is that so? If your idea of love is sleeping with my sister behind my back, then you are right. He won’t love me as much as you do."
His eyes grew wide, and his cheeks were painted red. "You!" He snarled. "Do you have to keep bringing that up? It was a mistake."
"A mistake?" I scoffed. "A mistake is misspelling a word, not sleeping with my stepsister. Did you accidentally fall into her bed? Did you also accidentally take off your pants and stick your dick into her?"
He continued to stare at me, dumbfounded. His mouth opened, then snapped shut, and I merely smirked at him. "So let’s just not waste each other’s time and get this done and over with." He was still fuming in silence when I continued. "Didn’t you want to sign the divorce papers?"
"So eager to sign the divorce papers to be with your new boy toy, hm?" He hissed, his expression filled with disdain.
"I would be lying if I said no," I shot back so quickly, even I was surprised myself. But judging by the look on his face, I knew I hit him exactly where it hurts.
He slammed the table between us, and a few heads turned to stare, but not for long. He gritted his teeth, anger swirling in the depths of his eyes.
"You are just a fucking slut," he snarled, spitting the words out like they were poison in his mouth. "Seven years ago, you schemed your way into my bed. I bet you would do the same to him, too. All to climb the ranks and get to the top."
I didn’t let his words affect me, instead, the corners of my lips curled into a smile. After all, I knew his ego was bruised just by a few words.
"Say whatever you want, Lucas. It doesn’t change the fact that I am the one who chose to leave you. Nor will it change the fact that you have lost your position as the CEO of Smith Enterprise."
I watched as his brows crinkled, the frown still lingering between his brows.
"Tell me..." I drawled, savouring each word on my tongue. "How does it feel to hit rock bottom? How does it feel...to lose everything?"
"I didn’t lose everything. I have Jessica, and that’s all that matters to me right now."
"Right, of course. Let’s see how long she will stay with you when you are penniless and worthless to her."
"You are just jealous of her," he shot back immediately, his tone defensive. "You are unhappy that she got my attention when you failed to do so. So you are threatening me with divorce now, right?"
A cold chuckle erupted from my throat. "Jealous? Stop dreaming, Lucas Smith. Just sign the papers, and we will go our separate ways, and we will never have to see each other ever again. Isn’t that what you want?"
He was still staring at me when I added, "You wouldn’t want Jessica having any wrong ideas, would you? I bet she’s unhappy that you are refusing to sign the papers."
Jessica’s name barely left the tip of my tongue when I watched him pull the pen out of his pocket and sign his name across the paper without a second thought. Guess I was right then.
"Fine," he snapped. "But don’t regret it. I won’t take you back."
Great. I could finally leave him behind and start anew without Lucas or Jessica haunting my thoughts.
I snatched the paper from his hand with a satisfied smile plastered across my face. "Perfect. That’s it then. We are no longer husband and wife. The only thing I regret is not leaving you sooner."
I rose from my seat, and the sound of the chair screeching against the wooden floor rang in my ears. Clutching the paper tightly in my hand, I looked down at him to meet his gaze.
"And stop harressing me or Rhys. If you ever show up at our office again, I will not hesitate to call the cops," I warned with a serious expression etched onto my face.
He let out a scoff. "You think you can scare me? It won’t work, sweetheart," he said with a wry smile.
"Don’t call me sweetheart," I snapped harshly, disgusted by the way it sounded on his lips. "And get ready to pack your stuff. I’m taking my house back as I said. I’m not planning on changing my mind."
"You are not taking the house back, it belongs to us. I won’t let you step foot inside."
I narrowed my eyes at him, anger pulsing through my veins, but I kept my voice calm. "We shall see about that."
I spun on my heels to leave when a loud screech pierced through the air once more, and warm fingers wrapped around my wrist in a tight grip. Whipping my head around, I came face to face with Lucas, his eyes glinting with a knowing look as a smirk morphed itself onto his lips.
"Where do you think you are going? We are not done yet."
