Chapter 1644: Chapter 1644

When Sun Jiajun learned that Wu Qiangwei had been put on the wanted list, his first reaction was excitement!

With the Mayor wanted, the City Government’s number one person would now be him, the Deputy Mayor!

He stayed excited the entire day.

Yet that night, he suddenly received a call from Wu Qiangwei.

For a moment he struggled over whether to pick up, but in the end he did.

On the phone, Wu Qiangwei told him to arrange some people to come to Pinghai to coordinate on investment promotion.

He felt completely at sea, not understanding what Wu Qiangwei was getting at.

Only after she finished did Sun Jiajun vaguely realize that something might have changed regarding Wu Qiangwei being wanted.

He asked her directly, and the answer left him stunned.

That Pinghai City had such large-scale corruption was simply shocking.

After the shock came regret; even over the phone, Wu Qiangwei could hear his sigh.

She pretended not to hear it, repeated her request, and hung up.

Once his emotions settled, Sun Jiajun slowly reacted: Wu Qiangwei asking him to go to Pinghai City was clearly an attempt to win him over.

Otherwise, why would she share such a big chunk of political achievement with him for no reason?

Such a sudden show of goodwill didn’t make Sun Jiajun happy; instead, it triggered his vigilance.

He knew very well that the reason he could serve as Vice Mayor was because he had handled Zhang Yan’s flight abroad.

If he hadn’t intervened back then, Zhang Yan would have had a red notice issued on her.

But because of his intervention, Zhang Yan returned safely, only surrendered part of the stolen funds, and even secured an early-retirement package.

After something like that, he didn’t think Wu Qiangwei would have any goodwill toward him.

Besides, he still remembered that on his very first day in Jiangzhou, a surveillance camera had been installed in his apartment.

Although there was no solid proof of who installed it, he knew in his heart that it must have been Wu Qiangwei who had Song Guanchao put it in.

All of this proved that Wu Qiangwei and he were enemies, not friends, and could hardly coexist peacefully.

Which meant he had to be wary of this sudden show of goodwill from Wu Qiangwei.

"That woman is a viper."

Sun Jiajun narrowed his eyes and muttered to himself.

On the surface, since his arrival in Jiangzhou, Wu Qiangwei had never made things difficult for him at work; in the eyes of outsiders, the two got along very well.

But Sun Jiajun understood that this harmony was only on the face of it.

In the dark, Wu Qiangwei was probably just waiting for him to slip up.

That gave him a sense of urgency, like walking on thin ice.

Inside, Sun Jiajun was a little conflicted and somewhat uneasy.

Because no matter how many times he went over it, he still couldn’t figure out what pitfall might be hidden in Wu Qiangwei sending him to Pinghai for investment promotion.

He really wanted to find someone to discuss it with, but there wasn’t a single person around him he could talk to heart-to-heart.

Shi Qin was trustworthy enough, but she was just a section chief; her political savvy was limited, and she might not be able to offer any useful analysis.

Suddenly, he thought of Zhang Yan.

Maybe this Mayor Zhang, who had already taken early retirement, could give him some advice?

It was just that it was already very late; he didn’t know whether Zhang Yan had gone to bed.

He glanced at the time, hesitated for a few seconds, and still dialed Zhang Yan’s number.

To his surprise, the call was quickly picked up, and Zhang Yan’s lazy voice drifted over: "Mayor Sun?"

That lilting tone, like a soft Jiangnan ballad, made an image of Zhang Yan’s mature figure and radiant face flash before his eyes, and he couldn’t help but feel a stir in his chest.

He adjusted his mood and said, "I hope I’m not disturbing Mayor Zhang?"

"I’m no mayor now. Mayor Sun should just call me by my name," Zhang Yan said. "I’m all alone here, what’s there to disturb? Getting a call from you is actually a bit of a pleasant surprise—gives me someone to talk to."

The faint hint of resentment in her voice made Sun Jiajun’s heart ripple even more, his thoughts unconsciously drifting somewhere they shouldn’t.

"There’s something I’d like to consult you... about."

"Consult me?" Zhang Yan let out a string of bell-like laughter. "Tell me, but I may not be of much help, you know."

Sun Jiajun gave a wry smile. "It’s just that I have no one else to talk to, so I thought of you. One person’s thinking is always limited; with another pair of eyes, maybe I can get some inspiration."

Zhang Yan’s mind turned, and she said, "It’s hard to explain over the phone. Let’s talk in person."

In person... A restless urge rose in Sun Jiajun, though he kept up appearances. "Is it convenient?"

"I’m very convenient. I’m just afraid it’s not convenient for Mayor Sun."

"You’re joking. What inconvenience could I possibly have, then..."

"I don’t feel like going out. You come to my place," Zhang Yan cut him off. "I’ll send you the address. I’ll take a shower first; call me when you arrive."

"Okay..."

The line on the other end had already gone dead.

Sun Jiajun jumped to his feet in excitement and ran to the bedroom to pick out clothes.

A suit was too formal, sportswear wasn’t appropriate...

After agonizing for a while, he finally chose a pair of jeans with a white shirt.

He’d been considered quite the handsome guy when he was young; though he was older now, his figure hadn’t gone out of shape, and he was still a pretty dashing middle-aged man.

But Zhang Yan was also a great beauty; especially at her age, that mature allure combined with the bearing she’d cultivated over years in high office complemented each other perfectly—whether it was an eighteen-year-old college student or a senior city official, none could remain unmoved.

Originally, he’d planned to consult Zhang Yan and see if he could get some useful advice from her.

Now, though, other thoughts had crept in.

Who knew, there might be a bit of romance in store tonight.

With that in mind, Sun Jiajun even stopped by a pharmacy to buy a box of little blue pills.

If there really was a chance, he’d have to put on a good performance.

When he arrived at Zhang Yan’s home, he called her. She didn’t pick up, but a few seconds later the security door in front of him swung open.

Zhang Yan was wearing a black silk nightdress; lace along the neckline clung to her soft, milky-white breasts, and the smooth fabric of the gown skimmed over and outlined two pointed cherries.

The hem barely reached the tops of her thighs; with each step she took, it felt like the spring scenery beneath the skirt might slip into view.

Controlling his gaze from wandering, Sun Jiajun gave a polite smile. "Sorry to intrude."

Dimples appeared on Zhang Yan’s bright, beautiful face when she smiled. "Come in."

She turned around, a head of big waves swaying as it fell over her flawless, jade-like shoulders, and the scent of body lotion drifted into his nose.

Zhang Yan opened the fridge and, without turning her head, asked, "What would you like to drink? I only have beer and red wine, so you don’t really have a choice."

Alcohol...

Keeping his composure, Sun Jiajun said, "Red wine."

Zhang Yan popped the cork, set two wine glasses upside down on the coffee table, then poured them half full.

She picked up her glass and gestured for a toast. Sun Jiajun grabbed his wine and clinked lightly with her, watching as she tilted back her neck, her red lips pressed to the rim, and drained half the glass in one go.

Seeing this, the excitement in Sun Jiajun’s chest surged even more.

Tonight, there might really be a chance!

Zhang Yan set down her glass, and Sun Jiajun dutifully retracted his gaze.

He thought his eyes had been subtle, but little did he know that Zhang Yan had taken it all in.

He fancied himself the Hunter, yet he had no idea Zhang Yan was actually the yellow sparrow behind him.

Zhang Yan crossed her legs and lounged sideways on the sofa, her movements elegant and sexy.

Despite his best efforts at restraint, Sun Jiajun’s peripheral vision still stole the occasional glance.

"So what does Mayor Sun want to consult me about?" Zhang Yan tilted her head, one arm braced on the armrest, her palm cupping her cheek, her whole body radiating a potent, provocative allure.

Steadying himself, Sun Jiajun said, "Wu Qiangwei contacted me tonight."
