Chapter 158: Assurance

"It is a beautiful plan," Kane admitted, looking away from the table to meet her gaze once more.

"It requires patience, but it guarantees a flawless victory with minimal casualties on our side. The system interface won’t even predict a threat level until we are already inside their walls."

Seraphina tucked the map safely into her leather pouch, stepping backward toward the shadows lingering near the window.

"I will return to Milfheim to finalize the bypass codes. I expect my payment to be ready when I get back, Kane."

"You will have your gold," Kane promised, watching her form begin to dissolve seamlessly back into the stealth magic.

"And maybe we can finish that business of ours once we make this ready."

An echoing laugh lingered in the room long after she vanished, leaving Kane entirely alone with his racing thoughts and a perfect strategy for his next conquest.

Silence settled over the room the moment she vanished into the shadows.

Standing by the window for a few lingering seconds, Kane let the night breeze wash over his face before turning his attention back to the bed.

"Was someone just here?" Misha murmured, rubbing her sleepy eyes as she shifted against the plush pillows.

Walking slowly across the floorboards, Kane offered a warm smile and reached out to pull the blankets up around her shoulders.

"Go back to sleep. It was just a ghost."

Misha sniffed the air delicately, her nose wrinkling in a very cute display of suspicion.

"A ghost that smells remarkably like nightshade and trees. Seraphina was standing right by the bed, wasn’t she?"

’Nothing gets past an oracle,’ Kane chuckled internally, sliding back under the covers and wrapping his uninjured arm around her waist.

’I should have known she was only pretending to be deeply asleep.’

"She dropped by to deliver some scouting information," Kane admitted smoothly, resting his chin on the top of Misha’s head.

"Nothing for you to worry about right now."

"I am not worried," Misha replied, tilting her head up to meet his gaze with a playful glint in her eyes.

"I heard most of the conversation anyway. You two have unfinished business, it seems."

"Are you jealous?" Kane teased, arching a single brow as he gently traced a lazy pattern along her spine.

"Not in the slightest," Misha laughed softly, shifting closer until her cheek rested directly against his bare chest.

"I already knew she was captivated by you. Anyone with eyes can see the way she looks at you when she thinks nobody else is paying attention."

’She really enjoys playing this game with me,’ Kane mused, enjoying the relaxed banter after such a long, chaotic day.

’No screaming, no arguments, just pure confidence.’

"Captivated is a strong word," Kane pointed out, feigning a modest tone.

"She just respects my business practices."

"Please," Misha scoffed playfully, reaching up to trace the faint scars on his collarbone.

"She acts like a hardened warrior who cares for nothing but gold, yet she risks sneaking into a warlord’s bedroom just to ask if you missed her. The poor woman is hopelessly smitten."

"Can you really blame her?" Kane grinned widely, leaning down to press a soft kiss against her forehead.

"I am a very charming man when I want to be."

"You do possess certain talents," Misha conceded, her voice dropping into a softer, much more intimate register.

"You know exactly how to ruin a woman’s defenses without even drawing a weapon."

"Oh?" Kane prompted, genuinely curious to hear her elaborate.

"Care to list these dangerous talents of mine?"

Misha shifted her weight, propping herself up on one elbow so she could look directly down into his eyes. Her hair cascaded over her shoulders beautifully.

"Well, for starters," Misha began, a mischievous smile playing on her lips, "you kiss remarkably well. It is a genuine risk for anyone with a weak heart."

"Is that a medical opinion?" Kane chuckled, moving his hand up to cup the side of her face.

"Because I never received any complaints about my methods before."

"It is a factual observation," Misha countered smoothly, leaning into his touch while keeping her gaze locked on his.

"You kiss like you are trying to consume a person’s soul, Kane. It leaves a girl completely breathless and entirely unable to formulate a coherent thought for at least an hour afterward."

"If it truly poses such a risk to a weak heart," Kane whispered, his voice dropping an octave as he pulled her slightly closer, "then perhaps I should stop kissing you altogether. For your own safety, of course."

Misha gasped in mock horror, lightly slapping his chest.

"Do not even joke about such cruel punishments! I am an oracle, so my heart is perfectly strong enough to handle your affection."

"Are you certain about that?" Kane challenged playfully, brushing his thumb across her lower lip.

"Because I seem to recall you melting into a puddle the last time I backed you against the sanctuary."

A faint blush crept across Misha’s cheeks, though she refused to break eye contact.

"That was a surprise attack," Misha defended herself quickly, though a quiet laugh betrayed her composure.

"You caught me off guard while I was trying to alert you."

"A good warlord always strikes when the enemy is distracted."

"I am not your enemy," Misha whispered, her smile fading into an expression of deep, genuine love.

"And you do not need to use tactics to win me over, Kane. You already conquered me completely."

"I didn’t conquer. I love you, just like those women out there. I won’t make this only about me. If Seraphina bothers you, tell me."

"I know."

"Show me," Kane murmured, tilting his head up toward her.

Misha didn’t hesitate.

Lowering her head, she captured his lips in a slow, tender kiss that spoke volumes without requiring a single word.

She tasted like mint tea and magic, grounding him instantly after hours of dealing with mythical beasts and complex war strategies.

Sliding his fingers into her silver hair, Kane deepened the kiss naturally, savoring the quiet intimacy of the moment.

He let his worries about the Elven borders and looming battles fade into the background, focusing entirely on the warmth of his wife resting securely in his arms.

Pulling back just far enough to catch her breath, Misha rested her forehead against his, her eyes fluttering open slowly.

"See?" Misha whispered, a triumphant little smile returning to her face.

"My heart is still beating perfectly fine."

"Give it a few more minutes," Kane countered smoothly, shifting his weight to roll her gently onto her back, careful to keep his injured arm out of the way.

"I was just warming up."
