Chapter 240: Chapter 237 Speaking Human Language_1

Zhou Ning quickly raised his hand, signaling them to stop their actions; there was no need to move the freezer back. What Zhou Ning cared about was the condition of the body. Half-baked rice was hard to cook, and Zhou Ning had already deeply realized that.

Just like the last case in Jingkou District, trying to find problems during a second autopsy was next to impossible.

Xu Dayuan raised his hand, signaling everyone to stop their movements. Zhou Ning had already put on gloves and moved closer to the freezer. Mr. Zhao lit a high-beam light, instantly illuminating the area at the entrance of the warehouse.

"Was the freezer bought specifically for preserving the body of your sister?"

Chen Wenchi nodded.

"It was bought and delivered here with my sister. I asked friends who work at the funeral parlor, and they told me that to preserve it properly, a special temperature-controlled freezer was needed. A regular one can only go down to around ten degrees, and they aren’t even temperature regulated, so they can’t preserve a body for a long time. That’s why I bought this one, which goes down to minus seventy degrees."

Zhou Ning nodded, sensing that Chen Wenchi had a very good relationship with his sister, Zhang Yinan. He had made a long-term plan. Opening the freezer lid, though the power was off, cold air rushed towards him.

The freezer was quite long, probably over 1.8 meters. There was a thin layer of frost inside, covering both the walls and the object protruding inside. It seemed like there was plastic cloth on the outside and a quilt inside.

Seeing this, Zhou Ning didn’t proceed to unwrap the object, as it would be too distressing to do so in front of the deceased’s family member.

"The body is well preserved. Let’s go back to the forensic lab. The body needs to be thawed before we can perform an autopsy."

Xu Dayuan nodded, calling over some people to move the freezer into the vehicle for transporting bodies. Only then did they leave the place, and of course, Chen Wenchi had a lot of instructions before he left.

The vehicle quickly arrived at the back yard of the municipal bureau and went straight to the door of the technical division.

Everyone got out of the car, and the freezer was taken out.

With the body frozen like this, an autopsy today wasn’t realistic. Given the temperature, it needed to be placed inside a body-thawing cabinet for at least seven to eight hours, so it was too late to do it today.

After giving some instructions, everyone headed straight to the third-floor laboratory.

After swiping their cards to enter the lab, Mr. Zhao locked the door from the inside. Chen Wenchi looked at Xu Dayuan, who gave a nod of his head.

"This is the temporary office for the special case team. They are all the most outstanding members of the special case team from various fields. You can speak openly."

Chen Wenchi opened the box, turned it in a direction, and inside were some documents, clearly photocopies. Of course, there was also a portable hard drive. Mr. Qu stepped forward and took the hard drive. Chen Wenchi quickly said from behind:

"I’ve said this on the way here, but I don’t have the password for the hard drive. To view the contents inside, you’ll need to decrypt it."

After speaking, Chen Wenchi looked at everyone with some concern, and seeing that there were no surprised expressions on their faces, he felt a bit at a loss. Could it be the password was easy to resolve?

"Mr. Qu, the hard drive is yours!"

Mr. Qu acknowledged with a response and began to get busy. Chen Wenchi wasn’t sure if he would be able to watch, so he took a seat and stared at Mr. Qu’s computer. After all, numbers were constantly changing on the screen, and passwords were being cracked, kind of like watching a lottery draw.

Xu Dayuan waved at the two newly joined financial investigation officers. They approached, and he pressed the box under his hand, not handing it directly to them.

"The two sets of accounts Mr. Qu gave you, have you looked at them?"

"We’ve seen them, and we’ve also compared them with their group’s financial statements. One of them matches the published financial statements in terms of high sales volume. As for the other, it’s likely the real account. Also, with Mr. Qu’s help, we checked the transactions between their subsidiaries and overseas accounts and found some issues."

Xu Dayuan was somewhat surprised; he didn’t expect Mr. Hu’s people to be reliable, at least not half-baked.

"Oh, what issues?"

The other man with glasses walked to the computer, opened a page, and pointed to some data:

"Leader, look at this. This is a chemical company under the Guanghai Pharmaceutical Group, which produces raw materials for some special drugs and has some import and export business. But as you can see, their books show losses, and each year the losses are significant.

Surprisingly though, their business volume is not small. Look at these orders and the figures for their foreign exchange transactions. Without getting into detail, this company has transferred no less than thirty billion Chinese yuan overseas from January 2009 to January 2012."

Xu Dayuan stared at the computer screen for a while but didn’t seem to understand. He wasn’t under any pressure and simply waved his hand.

"Speak in terms I can understand."

The man with glasses quickly pushed his glasses up and rephrased:

"How to put it... We can’t see the process now, but we know that the group continues to have money coming in, which is far more than its operating income. This incoming money, after circulating among several companies and then being transferred overseas as purchases, compensation, and other means, including tax avoidance, might be illegal funds. At the very least, this behavior does not stem from legitimate sources of money, right?"

The two nodded in unison, also taking a deep breath.

It seemed like he finally understood.

"After all, the amount is too huge. In just three years, there has been thirty billion, and that’s only reflected in the accounts of this one chemical company. This has already gone beyond the scope of ordinary asset transfers and perhaps involves more serious issues."

Xu Dayuan got it, the man with glasses seemed to think that this was more like economic espionage or something akin to international money laundering.

Xu Dayuan pushed the box in front of him toward the two men and tilted his chin up slightly.

"Take a look at these materials and see if they’re related to what you were talking about."

The two men hurriedly leaned in, flipping through the documents. There was a whole box of them, so they simply moved their laptop over, inputting data and sorting through the evidence as they went.

After waiting for half an hour, the man with glasses conferred with his colleague for a while, then stood up seriously and looked at Xu Dayuan.

"Leader, we need to retrieve some publicly available information for comparison. As for these materials, we also need to compile and summarize them. We can give you the final results by tomorrow morning at the earliest."

Xu Dayuan stood up. He knew these people weren’t here to help and that he was a bit of a disturbance to their work, so he quickly got to his feet.

"I’ll have someone send you some food later, it’s almost six o’clock, and I’ll also have someone bring you some resting supplies. This case won’t be solved overnight, so prepare yourselves for a long haul and don’t work yourselves sick."

The two nodded and buried their heads in their work again.

Xu Dayuan stroked his chin and waved to everyone to come out. Zhou Ning was standing in the hallway, immediately cutting off Xu Dayuan’s question.

"Don’t ask. I’ll say it voluntarily. The body won’t be thawed for over eight hours, and there are still the external wrappings. I can only perform the autopsy tomorrow. Didn’t you talk to Mr. Hu on the way just now? What about the previous case files, have they been found? And the autopsy report written by Cui Haibin, there must be that at least, right?"

Xu Dayuan nodded; he knew he was a bit anxious. Indeed, bodies stored at low temperatures couldn’t be thawed so quickly. He took out his phone and dialed Mr. Hu’s number.

"Mr. Hu, have you found the case files? And the autopsy report, you don’t have that either, do you?"

...

The next day. (January 31)

Zhou Ning arrived early at the Technical Division, went straight upstairs to the office, where Liu Yufei was already standing at the door holding two file boxes.

"Sorry Mrs. Liu for keeping you waiting. Come in quickly!"

Liu Yufei smiled, entered, and threw the two boxes in front of Zhou Ning.

"The case file of Zhang Yinan’s suicide from jumping off a building was found at the Maidao Police Station in Tongshan District. There’s very little content inside, a few scene photos, but having looked at them, they’re not the kind of photos taken at the scene after the victim’s fall, but rather on the transfer stretcher of the ambulance.

The remaining photos are of maintaining order at the scene, as well as some looking up at the top of the building. As for the building’s roof, there are several clear footprints that match the sole pattern of the deceased’s shoes. At the end of the case file is a notification.">

According to various times listed inside the case file, it can be seen that once Zhang Yinan was confirmed dead, the case file was deemed concluded and didn’t wait for autopsy results, let alone show the process of autopsy. As for the family’s objections, that’s also not reflected."

[Incident Report]

At about 13:00 on February 14, 2009, an incident of a fall from a height occurred at the Guanghai Pharmaceutical Group building in Tongshan District.

After the police were alerted and investigated, it was discovered that on the same day at 12:44, Zhang Yinan (female, 28 years old, from Tongshan District) fell from the top of the building due to emotional disputes and was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.

Qindao City Tongshan Public Security Sub-bureau

February 15, 2009

Zhou Ning reviewed the file and naturally understood what it meant. Someone wanted to quickly suppress this matter, be it Guanghai Pharmaceuticals or Tongshan Sub-bureau, and indeed, they did just that.

He looked over the autopsy report, which was even simpler, marking the fracture conditions of the deceased’s limbs, head, and torso, noting no external injuries or defensive wounds on the face and arms, and no foreign substances or skin under the fingernails. Blood tests didn’t reveal any alcohol, drugs, or toxic substances, and the cause of death was listed as injuries from a high fall.

The signature at the end was indeed that of Cui Haibin.

Several X-ray films were tucked inside, and Zhou Ning turned on the viewer, clipped on the films, distinguished them carefully, and checked each against the hand-drawn marks on the autopsy report. There was no problem with the descriptions of fractures and damage to the organs.

But the process of the autopsy was very simple, even perfunctory, as everything was judged through the films. Although the report mentioned laboratory results, there was no corresponding report.

Could it be that the tests weren’t done?

This, however, needed to be checked with Mrs. Cui. Remembering their busy state, Zhou Ning didn’t rush to make that call. After all, checking the lab records should suffice, and he could ask Gao Tie to look into it.

Zhou Ning nodded at Liu Yufei.

"Didn’t your boss come over?"
