Chapter 100: Chapter 99 Get away, get away! [2nd Update]_1
"Zhou Xiaozhou, come out!"
He Shancun’s voice in the hallway was loud, and Zhou Ning shrank his neck as Xu Dayuan grinned and poked at Zhou Ning’s arm.
"Here comes the man, aren’t you going to show your face?"
Zhou Ning gave him a cold look, pushed the door open, and waved at He Shancun. At that moment, He Shancun was carrying a medical kit with a male doctor following behind. Zhou Ning quickly waved his hand, placing a finger on his lips to signal He Shancun not to shout.
"Hurry over, let’s talk inside."
He Shancun swaggered over to Zhou Ning, with the male doctor in tow. Zhou Ning pulled them into the room, where Xu Dayuan was sitting without getting up and just waved as the men were pulled in.
"I didn’t say anything!"
Zhou Ning dragged the two men in front of the one-way mirror and pointed at the interrogation room inside:
"This person is Cui Guanglin."
He Shancun was taken aback and raised an eyebrow as if he had discovered some earth-shattering secret.
"Is this your would-be brother-in-law?"
"Ptooey, what ’would-be brother-in-law’?"
Zhou Ning lowered his voice and talked about the events of the past two days.
He also hinted that this person might be the killer in the Red Dress Serial Murder case, which left He Shancun in shock, with his mouth agape for a long while.
Of course, as for multiple personalities, Zhou Ning didn’t elaborate much, as this was still speculation and required further observation to determine.
"No wonder you asked us to come over, but the DNA tests are all done, is there still a need for a physical examination?"
"It’s not a physical examination, it’s a medical checkup, breaking down his psychological defenses. Without his clothes to hide behind, his biggest secret is laid bare for all to see, which can trigger his emotions. We need to wait a little, though; his mother will be arriving shortly."
The junior officer had already brought in chairs for the two to sit down and thoughtfully served them two cups of tea.
Although used to witnessing life and death at the hospital, this was the first time He Shancun had encountered such a situation. His prior anger vanished, and he chatted with Xu Dayuan with great interest. Although he didn’t pry needlessly, there was a strong element of enjoying the drama of it all.
It wasn’t long before He Chunyang arrived.
"The Cui parents are here, Chief, do you want to see them alone?"
Xu Dayuan stood up and walked straight out. He Shancun leaned close to Zhou Ning’s ear.
"He’s been away from his parents since he was young, and in their eyes, he’s a different person. I think he has never told his parents about his physical issues, after all, he got into a prestigious university on his own and later, on his own merit, he got a job at First Middle School and even became the head of the chemistry teaching group, along with being a class advisor. That’s the child of someone else’s family in the eyes of ordinary people."
"I got it, you’re aiming to provoke him then have us come in for the examination. That way, even the calmest person would have a hard time staying composed. Aw, aw, aw, falling into the hands of the police after committing a crime, there’s no good end to it!"
He Shancun kept on lamenting and then continued to speak.
"It’s also fortunate that Xiaoyu is your sister. If it were someone else, they’d be harmed without even realizing it. Truly frightening."
Zhou Ning nodded. That was exactly how he felt at the moment. Just then, the door to the next-door interrogation room opened, and the police officer who had taken over for He Chunyang stopped talking.
Xu Dayuan walked in with Mr. and Mrs. Cui. Cui Guanglin, who was handcuffed to a chair, had been staring indifferently at the floor by the door, but when he saw the newcomers, he tensed up, struggled forcefully for a moment, and glared viciously at Xu Dayuan.
"Is this how you cops handle a case? Can’t find any evidence and you start bringing in my parents, what are you trying to do?"
With a slap, Xu Dayuan hit the table, his voice resoundingly loud. Already nervous, Mr. and Mrs. Cui were startled and nearly fell. They looked at Cui Guanglin tremblingly.
"Big brother, what on earth did you do? The police haven’t done anything to us, they just brought us here to ask when we last saw you, what time you came back for dinner, and when you left. Just tell the truth. If we clarify things, we can go home!"
Mrs. Cui’s last few words were tinged with a sob. Although they had worked in a remote area, they were educated people and knew what place this was and who could come in. So towards the end, they could no longer control their emotions.
Mr. Cui, supporting Mrs. Cui, looked at Cui Guanglin and sighed.
"It’s our fault for not disciplining you properly, but whenever it happened, we are your parents. Try to get lenient treatment; we will wait for you to get out, and we’ll help you find a lawyer."
Cui Guanglin’s mouth twitched, followed by a loud, mocking laugh.
"How ridiculous, I’m arrested by the police, and without an interrogation, nothing’s been revealed. What’s the meaning of your implication, huh? Oh, think I’m no longer the high school teacher who brings honor to you? Now you feel shamed, thinking you can’t lift your head high anymore? When have we ever been a family? Aren’t you and Cui Guangxu a family?"
With just one sentence, Mrs. Cui’s legs went weak, and Mr. Cui had to support her. Mr. Cui’s eyes bulged with anger as he pointed at Cui Guanglin, trembling as he said:
"You, how could you turn out like this? Guangxu is your brother!"
"Don’t talk like that, we’re not close. You didn’t go to Ying City to accompany Cui Guangxu; you were just waiting for the demolition compensation. As for retiring and arranging my wedding, those are all excuses. I bought the wedding house with the money I made from stocks and tutoring fees, and I earned the car myself.
I’m afraid that once the demolition money comes through, you’ll find some excuse to take the money and go to Ying City. You’ve never taught me, you’ve never raised me, you have no right to blame me. Relatives visit each other at least once over the New Year, but in the first thirty-one years of my life, we’ve met no more than ten times, so don’t act like you’re so disappointed in me. Get out!"
The last three words, Cui Guanglin roared out, the veins in his neck popping, his anger palpable. Xu Dayuan waved his hand.
"Let’s go, take Cui Guanglin’s parents to the room opposite to make a statement. Call the doctor over to give him a full body examination. Mr. Liu, unlock one of the suspect’s handcuffs so he can help the doctor undress him later."
Xu Dayuan didn’t even give Cui Guanglin a glance as he spoke and began to leave. Mr. and Mrs. Cui had already reached the door, their figures looking extremely hunched.
Today’s meeting had clearly hit them hard, with disappointment greatly outweighing their worry.
At this moment, Cui Guanglin had lost his previous composure. Seeing the police approach him, he kept shaking his arms and even tried to kick them, but his ankles were restrained.
"What are you doing, what do you want to do? This is a violation of human rights, I’m just a suspect now, you don’t have any evidence to prove I’ve committed any crime. Back off! Back off!"
Cui Guanglin screamed hoarsely. Mrs. Cui turned back for a glance, but Xu Dayuan quickly pushed her out the door and then turned to look at Cui Guanglin.
"We’ll start with the medical examination. As for the evidence, you’ll see it later. Struggling is pointless. We won’t force a confession out of you in a society governed by law. If we’re doing a medical examination, it’s for good reason. This room is soundproofed, so you can scream all you want."
Zhou Ning stood up and patted He Shancun’s arm.
"It’s your turn now. Xu Da will go in with you. If I go in later for an examination or to take photos, it will give him an excuse to get out of it in court, especially with Xiaoyu’s connection. Everything else, I’m counting on you."
He Shancun stood up, no longer dissatisfied, and put down the report, but his words were still sharp.
"So much nonsense, just get on with the job. By the way, have them bring in the stretcher from the ambulance. It’s inconvenient to perform an examination while standing or in a chair, and the stretcher can accommodate handcuffs too."
Upon hearing this, Zhou Ning laughed outright.
You have to say, those who save lives are indeed more experienced than oneself.
"He Shancun makes a good point. Mr. Liu, quickly ask someone to bring over the stretcher from the ambulance. But how did you guys bring an ambulance here?"
He Shancun curled his mouth.
"Xu Da called and said there was a suspect here needing an examination. Mr. Cao was very vague when he told me and I thought someone might be dying, so I requested to come with an ambulance. If something happened to the person, we could still save them in time, right?"
Zhou Ning hit He Shancun with a punch; this guy might look disdainful, but he’s reliable in his work.
"Having a friend like you is really not bad at all."
"Don’t flatter me. Having a friend like you, I’ve had nothing but trouble, working more and getting scared all the time."
The doctor who came with He Shancun covered their mouth and chuckled at the side. The two had a friendship that seemed almost teasing, but it was clear there was mutual admiration.
"It must be cool to be a forensic doctor, why didn’t I think of applying for that?"
He Shancun glanced at the person.
"Forget it; their job is even harder than ours when it comes to finding a partner. Many people find the profession interesting, full of mystery, but for settling down in life, who would choose that? I certainly wouldn’t agree if I had a daughter!"
"Alright, Mr. He, you’re still single," someone interjected.
"Cut it out, don’t bring me into this. Am I the same? I’m all alone, I don’t have anything, my head’s worked to the bone in the emergency department, and I don’t have time to worry about papers or assessments, let alone think about these things."
Zhou Ning was stunned. He Shancun was seven years his senior, so having the ability to be the head of the emergency department was no surprise, but Zhou hadn’t expected that he would still be single. It seemed he was a man with a story.
As he pondered this, the door to the next interrogation room was pushed open. The driver from the ambulance pushed the stretcher in, and Mr. Zhao accompanied him. Seeing this, Xu Dayuan paused for a moment, looking at Mr. Zhao with a puzzled expression. Mr. Zhao hurriedly pointed at the glass window.
"Zhou Xiaozhou said it would be more convenient to examine on this."
Zhou Ning was surprised, not knowing why Mr. Zhao had come back.
There was no need to ask, as Mr. Zhao had already rushed over, drunk a large glass of water, and explained:
"Mr. Liu and the others have gone to the scene. Doctor Liu had taken some people over just a while ago, told me there’s no need for me to follow, took plenty of people, and then sent me a text message with just four words, ’people from the city bureau’."
