Chapter 691: Chapter 539: The Third Ghost
Qu Muzhi was searching for a body hidden in a rather noisy place, buzzing with occasional strange sounds that might be music, a movie, or a broadcast. His target was akin to a concert hall, a radio station, or a movie screening room.
Yang Xiao told him that he had just come down from the third floor; he had searched both the third and second floors and found no such place.
"It looks like we have to go higher up," Qu Muzhi replied.
"Did you come up from even lower down?" Yang Xiao asked.
"Yes, the basement level. This hospital only has a basement level," Qu Muzhi emphasized and reminded Yang Xiao, who was searching for a cold place, that the morgue was on the basement level, not a small area, and perhaps the body he was looking for was hidden inside.
"Have you been inside?" This was crucial for Yang Xiao.
"No, I only glanced from a distance. Such a place doesn’t seem very safe." It was understandable that the body Qu Muzhi was looking for wouldn’t be in such a place, so there was no need for him to take the risk.
Later, the two exchanged thoughts on the current situation. Qu Muzhi suspected that the so-called "bad" might not truly exist, suggesting that it could be false information released by the hospital to sow distrust among these "patients," making it difficult for them to trust one another. The recent encounter with the sick ghost was a case in point—if it hadn’t been for his companions’ help, it would have been almost impossible for anyone targeted to escape using their own strength.
Yang Xiao agreed with this point; after all, he had already roamed three floors and seen two ghosts, but found no trace of the "bad." The two companions he encountered, a woman and Qu Muzhi, also had no news about the "bad."
Previously, Yang Xiao had suspected that the first person who attacked him was the "bad," but soon after, a scream was heard overhead.
Since their target locations differed, Yang Xiao and Qu Muzhi couldn’t travel together and had to part ways, but luckily they could communicate via mobile phones. They agreed to contact each other if they found a room that might conceal the body they were searching for during their search.
"Take care, Captain Yang."
"You too, take care."
With time pressing, they quickly separated after saying farewell, one heading up and the other down the stairs around the corner. Although the morgue didn’t sound very safe, Yang Xiao wasn’t very afraid, since there were a total of three ghosts. The sick ghost was now locked in a room, another ghost, likely Hu, had recently appeared on the fourth floor committing murder and probably wouldn’t come down to the basement soon. The most likely ghost he might encounter was Frog Ghost.
At least Frog Ghost could be seen with the naked eye and wouldn’t surprise him with a sudden attack. As long as he was careful, there shouldn’t be big problems.
Soon, descending to the basement using the stairs, and following the route Qu Muzhi had suggested, he cautiously moved along the wall until reaching the morgue’s iron door marked with the sign "Morgue." He hadn’t even approached it yet when he felt a chill.
Out of caution, he surveyed the area for half a minute to ensure there was no danger before slowly approaching.
The sign on the door was quite discomforting. The words "Morgue" were in white with red letters, the three large characters written as if dipped in blood with a brush, the characters bold and crude, and perhaps due to excess pigment, the paint dripped down like blood flowing.
Next to the iron door of the morgue was a rusty iron box, with a glimpse through a crack showing densely packed wires and a lever resembling a master switch, with a tiny green light on beside the lever glowing.
"Is your body hidden inside the morgue?" Yang Xiao stood outside, texting the rag doll to seek the views of the person concerned.
"I don’t know..."
Putting away his phone, Yang Xiao softly muttered a prayer for good luck and gently pressed on the door handle. As it opened with a slight friction sound, a burst of chill air hit him, but thankfully, he was prepared.
Looking inside, the space was not small, easily three to four times larger than other rooms combined. Twenty or so iron beds were arranged in two rows extending to the back, and on one side against the wall were three-tier stainless steel morgue cabinets with sliding doors.
Yang Xiao took a deep breath—the iron beds were not empty. Each held a body covered with a white cloth, exposing only the human silhouette, and crucially, many of the silhouettes were incomplete.
The gloomy environment, the incomplete bodies, the cold gleam from the morgue cabinets...in the quiet background, it was ghostly and even more eerie that the room was only illuminated by a few light fixtures hanging from the ceiling.
The light covers were of an old green type, casting a dismal green light that made the surroundings even more sinister and terrifying.
Taking a deep breath, Yang Xiao steeled himself and entered the morgue, closing the door behind him with a gentle push, "Brothers, I truly have a mission to complete. If I disturb you, please forgive me. After leaving, I will surely burn incense and paper for you all, many thanks!"
"No need to bother with anything, just lie still and sleep," he murmured softly, raising his hand and respectfully bowing to the bodies.
While it might not be useful, it was nevertheless a plea for peace of mind. Of course, the critical point was that he couldn’t use the magic artifact anymore; otherwise, there wouldn’t be a need for such trouble flipping over each bed, not worrying about finding which body was hidden where.
Yang Xiao decided to start searching from the two outer rows of bodies; if nothing was found, he would then search inside the morgue cabinets. This was a big undertaking, and he needed to speed up.
