Chapter 659: Chapter 526: Mutation

Seeing Lu Wencheng’s complexion drastically change, Yang Xiao also tensed up and asked in a low voice, "What’s wrong with you?"

"Didn’t you hear it?" Lu Wencheng looked at Yang Xiao in surprise.

"Hear what?"

"The sound of foot shackles, in the stairwell, there’s... something’s coming." In this situation, Lu Wencheng naturally knew that Yang Xiao wouldn’t be joking with him. The sound of chains was very clear. The only reason Yang Xiao couldn’t hear it was that a ghost was coming, and... this ghost was coming for him!

He immediately thought of the phone call he had just made, but what puzzled him was that he hadn’t answered the call. Why would it still attract the ghost?

Yang Xiao had previously encountered an attack by the Source Ghost. After hearing Lu Wencheng describe the sound of the foot shackles, he deduced that it wasn’t the Source Ghost, but a strange, unfamiliar ghost. This meant that both of them were clueless about this ghost’s way of killing.

The sound of chains clashing was getting closer. As the person involved, Lu Wencheng broke into a cold sweat. The pressure the ghost exerted on him was no less than that of the Chang Ghost. With the sound of chains emerging from the stairwell and approaching the 10th-floor corridor, Lu Wencheng’s last thread of hope shattered—the ghost knew where he was hiding and had locked onto him.

Taking out the large ruler, Lu Wencheng nervously explained to Yang Xiao, "This ghost is coming for me, I can’t implicate you, I’m going to go out and hide."

Lu Wencheng walked to the window, opened it and looked outside, intending to hoist himself over the sill. At the last moment, Yang Xiao stopped him, reminding him, "Doesn’t your ruler have the ability to teleport? You can teleport to another room, upstairs or downstairs."

"It won’t work, teleportation must be within the line of sight, and there can’t be any obstructions." Lu Wencheng was frantic, the sound of chains was less than ten meters from the door.

At this point, apart from using the Soul-Capturing Mirror, Yang Xiao had no other options. With their current situation, they were no longer in a position to withstand a direct confrontation with a strange ghost. And also, he couldn’t abandon Lu Wencheng; first, they had a significant connection, and Lu Wencheng had saved his life before. Second, if something happened to Lu Wencheng, who would find the Source Ghost? If the three people from the Patrol Defense Office came looking for him, he wouldn’t be able to explain.

Even though the Soul-Capturing Mirror was already showing abnormalities, Yang Xiao still had no choice but to use it. As Lu Wencheng mentioned, the sound of chains had stopped outside the door, Yang Xiao finally made up his mind, used the Soul-Capturing Mirror, and in the next second, directly took Lu Wencheng into the Mirror World.

Through the dressing mirror of the Mirror World, Lu Wencheng looked outside and saw that the already dim room was getting blurrier, as if a layer of mist was forming on the mirror. That thing was inside; Lu Wencheng could already hear the rattling sound of the chains.

The sound moved from the direction of the door, all the way to the bedside. Even separated by two worlds, Lu Wencheng remained exceedingly nervous and dared not breathe out. Because the mirror was obscured by mist, Lu Wencheng couldn’t see clearly inside the room, but he heard something slam to the ground near the bedside table. That ghost... seemed to be looking for something.

The crisis came quickly and also receded swiftly. The sound of chains left the bedside, heading towards the door. But before Lu Wencheng could catch his breath, something he never expected occurred. The sound of chains stopped right in front of the dressing mirror. A few seconds later, it moved away, finally fading away at the end of the corridor.

When the sound of chains had completely vanished, Lu Wencheng’s tense heartstrings finally began to relax. Instinct told him this ghost was very strong. If he had encountered it, given his current state, it would have been almost certain death. Thankfully, he had met Yang Xiao—it was indeed fate.

"Crack—"

Lu Wencheng saw the corner of the dressing mirror before him had shattered. It wasn’t smashed; it was as if it couldn’t bear some pressure and broke on its own. Moreover, the web-like cracks continued to spread nearby. Almost simultaneously, the bathroom mirror, the window glass, and even the reflective surface of the coffee table all started to show signs of breakdown, and the situation worsened rapidly.

Lu Wencheng looked at Yang Xiao in terror, but at this moment, Yang Xiao was looking down at the Soul-Capturing Mirror in his hands. The mirror’s surface had also developed cracks, in the exact same spot as the dressing mirror. With his extensive knowledge, Lu Wencheng guessed the reason immediately, "Your magic artifact is malfunctioning. Once all the mirrors here are broken, we’ll be trapped and unable to return!"

"Let’s go, hurry!!" Lu Wencheng couldn’t contain himself anymore, unsure what Yang Xiao was hesitating about. But when Yang Xiao looked up, Lu Wencheng was stunned to see fine lines of blood appearing on Yang Xiao’s mask, slicing his face into scattered fragments. It seemed that a gentle touch would cause his mask—and the face underneath—to shatter like a porcelain doll. Indeed, the more powerful and strange the Resentful Eye, the more terrifying the backlash that came with it.

"Are... are you okay?" As Lu Wencheng spoke, he gripped his large ruler tightly, fearing Yang Xiao might undergo some change.

Shaking his head, Yang Xiao spoke with a muffled voice, "I’m fine, I can still control it. I can’t see or hear what exactly is happening outside. Tell me."

As Yang Xiao listened to the ghost entering from the door, first going to the bedside, then seemingly near the window, followed by a noise near the bedside table, and finally walking outside but suddenly stopping in front of their mirror for a moment, a chilling sensation surged within him.

He knew the strength of his magic artifact, but it seemed as if the ghost had seen through it, knowing that someone was hiding inside the mirror.

That was nearly impossible unless this ghost had abilities similar to those of the Source Ghost. The more Yang Xiao thought about it, the more unsettling it felt.
