Chapter 588: Chapter 503: Diwu Jie Kong
Yang Xiao gave a carefree smile, "If soldiers come, we’ll block them; if floodwaters rise, we’ll build mounds to contain them. What is there to fear? As captains of the Patrol Defense Office, we naturally stand in opposition to Evil Cultivators. I have been on their hit list several times for ruining the Resentment Sect’s plans, but to me, it’s a badge of honor."
"Alright, Captain Yang, your teammates are waiting for you outside the door. I’ve offended you quite a bit recently. When I have time later, I’ll treat you to dinner as an apology," said Qu Muzhi as he rose to his feet and earnestly bowed to Yang Xiao.
"You speak too seriously, Captain Qu. Take care!"
"Take care!"
As he stepped out of the City Center Official Residence, Beibei, Big Bear, and the others were all waiting. They swarmed over and Xi Menxiu hurriedly asked, "Xiao, did they give you a hard time?" while scanning Yang Xiao up and down.
"No, Captain Qu is very reasonable. During the few days I’ve interacted with him, Captain Qu’s way of thinking has greatly improved," Yang Xiao said with an assured look, signaling his subordinates to be at ease with a smile.
Anyway, with the matter settled, Beibei, Big Bear, Yu Shu, and Xi Menxiu gathered up Yang Xiao, and the party of five headed for the restaurant they had reserved, looking to give Yang Xiao a bit of a scare.
From the drunken blabberings of Xi Menxiu, Yang Xiao learned about the recent events in Rongcheng. Lead by the Patrol Defense Bureau, with strong support from the Apostles Union and the Chamber of Commerce, a top-notch team with Qu Muzhi handling the frontlines had been formed. Comprising over a dozen captains, several squads launched simultaneous strikes on potential hiding spots for Evil Cultivators. They achieved some victories but only captured some unimportant lower members. These guys had a keen nose; the leaders, as if they had caught wind of the raids, ran off just ten to fifteen minutes before they arrived.
"That’s too bad. If only we had been a little earlier, we could have captured them all in one sweep!" Beibei said, slapping the table in frustration.
Xi Menxiu exhaled a breath reeking of alcohol, leaned in closer with a lowered voice, and mysteriously said, "I have a little insider tip. The Evil Cultivators who came this time are no ordinary bunch. The leader is said to be exceptionally strong, and even Qu Muzhi might not be a match for him."
A tipsy Beibei raised his hand and slapped Xi Menxiu on the back of his head, grumbling discontentedly, "I don’t believe it. Do you have any idea of the capabilities of Qu Muzhi? If he can’t handle it, then our Rongcheng Patrol Division..."
At this point, Beibei suddenly paused, turned to look at Yang Xiao, and instantly sobered up, saying with a sycophantic smile, "Then our Rongcheng Patrol Division would have to send out our trump card. Let’s call upon our great Captain Yang to take action!"
"Well said, Huang Beibei!" Xi Menxiu wobbled to his feet, lifted his glass, and toasted, "Here’s to our captain!"
"I say our captain has the bearing of a divisional-level captain!" Big Bear also chimed in teasingly.
Yu Shu merely smiled, toasting with everyone, flushed with alcohol, a harmonious scene indeed.
The waiter outside the private room was also caught up in the lively atmosphere. Yet, he didn’t understand why, for only five guests, they insisted on keeping a sixth chair, which now bore an old-fashioned suit jacket on its back.
After the meal, Yang Xiao was sent back to his apartment. He crashed onto the bed. Despite drinking quite a bit, he wasn’t very intoxicated. Yang Xiao speculated that this might be a benefit of his enhanced spiritual power. He took out his phone and first sent a respectful message to Chi Hengzhong, the president of the Chamber of Commerce, thanking him for the support in his time of need.
Next was Fu Qingzhu. Speaking to his own brother required less formality. Yang Xiao directly called him, and hearing Yang Xiao’s voice, Fu Qingzhu finally relaxed. Then, as if suddenly recalling something, he urged, "You should call that Miss Tong back right away!"
Shocked by the reminder, Yang Xiao asked, "What happened to Tong Han?"
"She’s fine, but she couldn’t get in touch with you a few days ago and even called me. She knew you were detained by the City Center Official Residence and was planning to break you out. Can you believe that? She told me to handle Qu Muzhi, and she’d be in charge of the rescue. Good heavens, if she had that capability why would she have been captured by Qu Muzhi to begin with?"
Yang Xiao was well aware of Tong Han’s abilities; stronger than the average captain, but still a step away from the Venerable Ones. Facing off against Qu Muzhi was no different from suicide.
"Right, send someone over later. I have a gift for you," Yang Xiao said before hanging up.
The call to Tong Han connected after just one ring. After reassuring his close friend, Yang Xiao asked about the matters concerning the Resentment Sect and the Xiu Sect. Unfortunately, Tong Han’s low status in her sect meant she couldn’t provide much information.
"Why didn’t you call me when you were in danger?" Tong Han demanded.
"Next time, I promise!" Yang Xiao hastily hung up.
Soon, he received a message from Fu Qingzhu’s driver—the car was parked at the location specified by Yang Xiao. Using the Soul-Capturing Mirror’s ability, Yang Xiao arrived at a secluded parking lot and handed a silver briefcase to the driver.
Inside was a mask—the Character "Li" Mask—taken from the dead body of a certain Li Generation Angel Envoy killed by Daoist Qingfeng. Now that Fu Qingzhu had been promoted to the vice president of the Apostles Union, he could certainly make use of this mask.
Back in his apartment room, lying on the bed with closed eyes, Yang Xiao’s recent experiences played through his mind like a slideshow. His body was exhausted but his mind was wide awake. After tossing and turning to no avail, he sat up, got out of bed, and headed to the table where he retrieved the rusty kitchen knife from the Drama Robe. Of all the magic artifacts he possessed, the kitchen knife was the only one that hadn’t seen combat yet, and he had no idea whether it would bring any surprises.
