Chapter 496: Chapter 429: Ghost Biting Incident_2
The girl’s manner of death was gruesome, her body covered with scars, half of her face a bloody, indistinguishable mess, with just the left eye wide open, filled with terror, unable to close even in death, her entire left arm and half of her right leg missing, making the scene utterly chaotic.
This was the first victim in this case, discovered this morning by an elderly person who was out early for morning exercises. The elderly person first noticed blood on the ground, then followed the trail to find the body in the bushes.
Initially, the police crudely judged from the crime scene that it might be the work of wild dogs from the area, considering there had been several instances of dog attacks in recent years, though this was the first to result in death.
The records showed that Scientist Garden Residential Area was located in a remote area, bordered on the left by a cemetery and closely adjacent to a slaughterhouse on the right, one of the city’s oldest and most decrepit complexes, with a very low occupancy rate. Each night, it was pitch black, almost turning it into a ghost town. Residents reported often seeing packs of wild dogs roaming nearby.
However, once the body was brought back to the police station, a forensic doctor performing the routine check discovered something odd: the injuries on the young girl didn’t resemble those caused by canids but more like those made by a human, specifically, a human with sharp, fanged teeth.
At the same time, another strange thing occurred: the police had not received any reports of missing children from the neighborhood. However, upon making inquiries locally, they found a clue—the family living in Unit 503 of Building 18 had a young girl of similar age.
The head of this household was a middle-aged man, divorced, living alone with his daughter. The police realized something was amiss when they couldn’t get through to his phone, and knocking on his door yielded no response. More terrifying was that while the police stood outside the door, calling his mobile phone, they could hear a ringtone coming from inside the apartment.
The mobile phone was inside, but no one answered the door. The police on the scene decided to forcibly enter. Upon breaking in, they were horrified by the sight—a dismembered male corpse lay inside the bedroom, the death even more tragic than the girl’s, as if devoured by numerous wild dogs.
But how could that be possible?
How could wild dogs possibly barge into a house, kill a person, and feast on them, especially on the fifth floor? Even more bizarrely, there were massive bloodstains only in the bedroom, the scene in chaos, while other rooms were very clean. It seemed as though the wild dogs had suddenly materialized, appearing spontaneously in the man’s bedroom.
The people found half of the man’s severed arm in a corner; he was still clutching a torn piece of a skirt. Based on the scene survey, everyone speculated that the man was mending his daughter’s skirt under the lamp when the attack happened, a fact confirmed by further investigation. The next day, his daughter’s class was to have a small dance, and she was one of the performers.
The situation became increasingly bizarre. With the man and his daughter dying consecutively, it had escalated beyond a normal criminal case, naturally drawing the attention of the Patrol Defense Bureau.
Soon, more and more clues on the two bodies confirmed that it wasn’t wild dogs that had killed this unfortunate father and daughter but a human—moreover, one who had consumed large amounts of their flesh and had teeth sharp enough to crush large bones, a biting force far beyond normal human limits.
The incident occurred suddenly, and the Luming Bureau, having received the news, quickly intervened, sending an investigation team to conduct inquiries in the neighborhood. Two other households also resided in Building 18, and both were home that night. They recalled hearing a dog bark briefly during the night but didn’t think much of it. They emphasized that the barking seemed far off and not like it was inside the building, and they heard only the barking, no human shouts or cries for help.
Since they knew wild dogs often roamed nearby, they were accustomed to it and none of the residents had the habit of going out at night.
Basing their deductions on various clues, the investigative team speculated that the girl’s father was attacked first, and the girl managed to flee, only to be caught by the creature before she could escape the complex, and was also killed. Her mangled body was then discarded in the bushes.
Due to the unclear range of this supernatural event and the unknown pattern of attacks by this ghostly creature, the Luming Bureau promptly moved all remaining residents out of the complex. They investigated the area for an entire day but gathered scant information.
As night fell, the attack occurred again, this time involving a residential security guard. The police had asked him to stay and assist with the investigation, but he decided on his own to sneak back home as dusk fell. His home was very close to the community’s main gate, just a few buildings away, but unexpectedly, he never returned. His disappearance was only discovered by the police later.
The investigation team followed the route he had taken to his home, and inside the hallway, they found his body. It had been brutally dissected, his intestines spilled on the floor, and the walls were splattered with blood and flesh. The scene was horrifying. And yet, there were no bloody handprints or footprints left nearby. The perpetrator had vanished after the killing, leaving no trace behind.
Shortly thereafter, the investigation team noticed there were still people wandering around the community. They realized their preparation had been too rushed and not thorough, as there were still residents around, mainly elderly who didn’t interact much with the outside world.
The investigation team found it strange that the security guard had been attacked, yet these elderly people were unharmed. This might hint at the conditions under which the perpetrator operated.
After persuading these residents to leave once more, the investigation team began to explore the community again. The night deepened, and unexpectedly, this time the attack was against them. One of their team members suddenly disappeared and has not been reachable since.
Yang Xiao reviewed all the information and had a preliminary understanding of the situation. The Luming Bureau had not been entirely clueless; at least they had identified the scope of the paranormal activity, concentrated a bit southward in the central area of the community, covering about a dozen buildings, including Building No. 18 and Building No. 11, where the residential security lived.
"We have discovered that this incident is shadowed by the Evil Cult of Resentment. We have another team tracking the Evil Cultivator’s whereabouts; your mission is to completely resolve this paranormal event and minimize the losses," Nalan Shuo said.
Nalan Shuo, with a serious expression, added, "The higher-ups have decided to name this paranormal event ’Ghost Biting Incident,’ and it has been classified as highly dangerous, so you must be very careful."
"Let’s head out," Nalan Shuo stood up.
The vehicles and equipment were ready; Yang Xiao and his team of five took the elevator down to the underground parking garage, where the technical department had already loaded various devices onto the vehicle, with a dozen team members geared up and ready to go.
Once in the vehicle, Yang Xiao reiterated to Beibei and the others the high risk of this mission, potentially a retaliation by the Resentment Sect, urging them to proceed with caution.
"If the danger is too great, or if any unforeseen incidents occur during the mission, remember, don’t worry about me—run as fast as you can. I am stronger than you think, and having you by my side will only impair my abilities. Do you understand?" Yang Xiao spoke in a hushed tone.
"Captain, don’t talk like that! If we die, we die together. It’s better to have company on the Road to the Netherworld!" Xi Menxiu said with tears in his eyes.
