Chapter 151: Chapter 142 Escape

"What’s wrong with you? Don’t scare me like that." Seeing Song Yan’s expression change dramatically, Yu Mi also became tense.

Yu Mi was a newcomer, and Song Yan didn’t dare tell her directly that they were probably in a ghost car, "Don’t be afraid, there’s something I need to tell you, we have to find a chance to get off."

Song Yan tried to stabilize Yu Mi as much as possible. The uncertainty with newcomers was too high, which was why most veterans were reluctant to cooperate with them.

Even if Yu Mi was slow to catch on, she realized something was not right. Her eyes, filled with fear, slowly widened, "You... you mean the driver..."

Before she could finish, Song Yan immediately covered her mouth with his hand. The ghost had not yet made a move on them, perhaps because they hadn’t reached their destination, or maybe the time wasn’t right, but being exposed could push the situation into an irreversible abyss.

The soundproofing of the vehicle was too good; Song Yan was now most worried about Yang Xiao’s situation—he didn’t have a cell phone, not even a chance to be warned.

They couldn’t afford to make any rash moves now. Song Yan looked through the observation window at the rear of the vehicle, judging their location, while also looking for opportunities.

He had already decided to escape. After all, if he continued to follow the car, it might be a dead end.

Facing a ghost, he only had one chance to attempt escape, so he had to be careful.

At this moment, Yu Mi also recognized the severity of the situation. After her initial panic subsided, she calmed down slowly, speaking in a hushed voice, "Mr. Song, I’ll follow you. Whatever you tell me to do, I’ll listen, please... please make sure to take me with you."

Catching a glimpse of Xiang Xiaolin, who was unconscious on the stretcher, a hint of compassion flashed through Yu Mi’s eyes, "If... if possible, please take Xiang Xiaolin with us, she’s a very useful person."

Yu Mi understood a lot after only two days in the Nightmare World. Relying on teammates to save someone out of conscience or pity was not realistic. To survive here, one either needed to be very strong or valuable enough for teammates to risk a rescue effort.

"If it’s possible, I will take her with us, but that might mean the three of us won’t be able to get away." Song Yan put it bluntly, given the difficulty of saving someone under these conditions.

The situation was deteriorating as Song Yan had anticipated. Looking outside through the observation window at the rear, the sparse lights were nearly gone, as if they were headed into a dark abyss.

Suddenly, the vehicle began to slow down and then started to bump along. They were on a rough road.

Now was the time!

Song Yan was quick, tentatively unlocking the door, and with a push, the rear door... the back door actually opened!

Beneath the car was indeed a road paved with stones, no wonder it was so bumpy.

Song Yan had been ready to jump out and escape, but he hesitated. Finally, with a look of joy, he turned to look at Yu Mi, whose face was also filled with excitement. The door opened as if it were the gateway to life.

"Yu Mi, you go first!" Song Yan had the bearing of a gentleman.

Yu Mi didn’t expect Song Yan to be so considerate of her. In such an urgent situation, it wasn’t the time for sentimentality. She made her preparations hastily and jumped out.

After an unsteady landing and rolling a couple of times, she got up from the gravel road, seemingly unharmed.

Seeing that Yu Mi, the first to jump out, was safe, Song Yan was relieved. He hadn’t given away the first chance to escape out of kindness but needed a guinea pig to test the waters.

Fortunately, the outcome was good. Yu Mi had survived, and so, naturally, could he.

But now there was a thorny issue. Song Yan looked at Xiang Xiaolin beside him, then turned his head to the driver’s cabin as if his gaze could penetrate the partition and see the scene inside.

After hesitating for a moment, Song Yan took a deep breath, glanced once more at the unconscious Xiang Xiaolin, and jumped out of the car.

After landing, Song Yan quickly got up and ran towards Yu Mi without looking back.

At that moment, Yu Mi looked in Song Yan’s direction with a face full of disbelief.

Reaching Yu Mi’s side, Song Yan dared to look back, witnessing a bizarre scene. The ambulance they were in had become battered and dirty, covered with mud, and only one side’s headlights were still on.

The rear door was twisted, obviously having suffered severe damage. Such a vehicle shouldn’t be on the road but scrapped.

Shortly thereafter, Yu Mi also recovered from her shock, realizing that Xiang Xiaolin was still in the car. Looking at Song Yan strangely, she said, "Mr. Song, Xiang Xiaolin... why didn’t you push her out too?"

On hearing this, Song Yan sighed, speaking in a heavy tone, "I had been ready, but... but I heard something in the driver’s cabin, it sounded like... like someone was ripping the partition between the driver’s cabin and the back."

Yu Mi showed a look of relief from the horror, "You mean the ghost noticed us?"

Song Yan nodded, his face filled with self-reproach, "I think so. It’s all my fault, if only I had been quicker, maybe... maybe I could’ve saved Miss Xiang, it’s all my fault!"

Having narrowly escaped death, Yu Mi had little left to complain about. Seeing her savior still blaming himself, she immediately offered comfort, "Mr. Song, don’t say that. You did everything you could, I saw it all. If it weren’t for you, I’d also be dead in that car. Please don’t blame yourself, I spoke out of turn."

"Let’s hope Miss Xiang and Chu Xi have their own good fortune." Staring at the receding taillights of the ambulance, Song Yan sighed.
