Chapter 269: Seducing?

"Ah... careful," Monica exclaimed as Roxanne pricked her finger while gathering twigs.

"It’s nothing," Roxanne assured her, giving her hand a quick shake before returning to work.

Monica let out a sigh. "Please don’t trouble yourself with this. It’s quite dark here, so it’s difficult to move around."

Roxanne smiled sheepishly. "While I don’t look like someone who does this often, I do have some experience."

Monica quickly waved her hands. "I didn’t mean it like that."

Roxanne chuckled. "I know. I was just teasing you."

Monica’s shoulders relaxed at her words. "But really, we don’t need any more twigs. This should be enough to start a fire."

Roxanne nodded in understanding. Dusting off her hands, she returned to the campsite alongside Monica.

Thea has already occupied one shelter and the soft sound of her snoring reached them.

There was just enough space between the two shelters to keep the food basket safely tucked away.

The campsite sat a short distance from the stream, allowing the gentle murmur of flowing water to linger constantly in the background.

The two women settled onto the ground as Monica began unpacking the cooking pots she had brought. One by one, she carefully took them out, checking each to make sure nothing had spilled.

Seeing the clay sealing the pots, Roxanne couldn’t help but remark, "You seem very accustomed to traveling. You used clay to seal them, didn’t you?"

Monica smiled, a little shy. "Yes, I did." Looking down at the pots, she added, "My father used to catch and sell fish. The stream was quite far from our village, so we often had to travel long distances to reach it."

Roxanne nodded, though her thoughts had already drifted elsewhere.

Her own memories of her father were faint, and the few that remained were hardly worth cherishing.

If there was one thing she remembered clearly, it was how strict he had always been. Constantly reminding her of her place. Constantly making sure she never stepped beyond the boundaries he had set for her.

When she was mated to Baldon, little changed.

Only then did she understand why those rules had been drilled into her since childhood.

Because her mate expected the very same thing.

He, too, wanted her to remain within the invisible walls others had built around her.

For the longest time, she accepted that life, believing it was simply how things were meant to be.

Until one day, a young man arrived at her home to hunt the moles.

After meeting him, she had begun asking herself questions she had never dared to ask before.

"You are lucky, Monica," she murmured before she even realized the words had escaped her lips.

Monica looked at her in confusion. "What do you mean?"

Roxanne immediately grew flustered.

"I... I was just saying... you’re lucky to have Luke as your mate."

She shut her eyes for a brief moment.

Ah... she had gone and said it after all.

Monica was caught off guard by those words, yet a gentle smile still blossomed across her face.

"You’re right," she said softly. "I couldn’t have asked for a better person to be my partner."

Roxanne could see the warmth and affection shining in Monica’s eyes.

And what woman wouldn’t look at her mate that way if he were as strong, dependable, and caring as Luke?

"He really is one of a kind," Roxanne said with a faint smile. "Not to be rude, but the first woman he ever loved became his mate."

Her smile deepened.

"That’s what makes him different. He doesn’t let others decide how he should live. He simply follows his heart."

Monica understood exactly what she meant.

Taking one’s own mother as a mate was considered sinful, something the tribe looked down upon.

At first, she had been terrified. She had tried to bury her feelings, fearing the judgment and disgust of others.

But Luke had never wavered.

His stubborn determination and unwavering love had given her the courage to cross that bridge of hesitation.

Now they were together.

No more hiding.

No more secrets.

"It must be nice..." Roxanne murmured under her breath.

Monica studied her quietly.

Roxanne clearly admired Luke. That much was obvious.

And Monica could tell Luke was drawn to Roxanne as well. The way he treated her made that impossible to miss.

What troubled Monica, however, was Roxanne’s current situation.

She was the chief’s mate.

If Luke and Roxanne grew any closer, things would inevitably become complicated between the two men.

"Roxanne..." Monica called gently. "...can you answer something honestly?"

A hint of tension crossed Roxanne’s face, but she gave a quiet nod.

Meeting her gaze, Monica asked the question that had been weighing on her mind.

"What are your feelings for Luke?"

....

Thunk!

Luke drove the axe into the tree one final time, and with a loud crack, it toppled to the ground.

Wiping the sweat from his brow, he rested the axe on his shoulder and glanced at the fallen trunk.

"I guess a few more logs should be enough?"

Laila, who had been standing nearby, gave a nod.

"For the whole night, yes."

A large sack rested beside her, already filled with more than twice blocks.

Each one could be split further and fed into the fire, enough to keep the campsite warm and illuminated throughout the night.

Luke nodded before walking over to the fallen tree and getting back to work.

With practiced precision, he cut the trunk into thick, round logs. Every swing of the axe was clean and efficient, revealing both his strength and weeks of experience.

Hunting beasts was one thing, but even hunters needed time to rest and recover.

Out in the wilderness, fire was more than a source of warmth. It was a necessity for survival.

Because of that, chopping wood had long since become second nature to him rather than a mere display of strength.

He split the trunk into four large sections before taking one of them and chopping it into several smaller blocks for easier storage.

He repeated the process with the remaining pieces, and within minutes, more than sixteen neatly cut logs lay scattered before them.

Luke purchased another sack from the Store and handed it to Laila.

"Go ahead. Collect them."

Laila nodded as she took the sack.

Stepping forward, she bent down and began gathering the cut logs, placing them inside one by one.

Luke sighed and took out a bottle of water. Drinking water, he turned towards Laila.

Suddenly, a harsh wind swept past them, flipping off her skirt completely.

Luke’s eyes narrowed as he saw her plump rear, covered by only a string that did nothing to hide her butt.

But apart from that what caught his attention was that red gem flashing at her rear entrance.

With a grin he stepped forward and—

*Pah*

"Kyah!" Laila yelped as his hand suddenly slapped her butt nearly making her fall.

Luke grinned and slowly moved the anal plug around, causing her to moan.

"Don’t tell me you have it plugged it in for the whole ride."

Laila turned to look over her shoulder, her face burning red, "I wanted to keep myself prepared...in case...you want to..."

Well, she achieved what she aimed for.

He was hard.
