Chapter 42: Arrival in the Fire Capital

Konoha was a fortress masquerading as a town. Everything in the hidden village served a military purpose: the high walls, the labyrinthine streets designed to confuse invaders, and the muted, earthy colors meant to blend into the surrounding forests.

The Fire Capital was the exact opposite.

It was a monument to absolute, unchecked wealth. There were no defensive walls, only sprawling, perfectly manicured gardens that stretched for miles. The streets were paved with smooth white stone, lined with towering, multi-story buildings adorned in gold leaf, vibrant silk banners, and imported glass windows. The air didn’t smell like iron and bleach; it smelled like roasted street food, expensive incense, and blooming cherry blossoms.

Lord Kazama practically wept when the massive, ornate gates of the Capital came into view.

The royal envoy was covered in dirt, his expensive silk robes ruined from the long march after the carriage was destroyed. When they finally crossed the city threshold, Kazama bowed shakily to Ren.

"I will go directly to the palace and inform Her Grace of your arrival, Uchiha-san," Kazama panted, leaning heavily on his folding fan. "Expect a royal courier by tomorrow."

Kazama didn’t wait for a reply. He practically sprinted toward the inner city, desperate to get away from the towering, stitched monster and the terrifyingly calm teenager.

Ren stood in the center of the bustling plaza. He took a deep breath, looking up at the towering merchant guildhalls.

"Look at this place," Ren said softly. "No ANBU on the rooftops. No shinobi patrols. Just merchants, nobles, and politicians."

Standing to his left, Pakura looked deeply unsettled.

Despite having been healed, she still wore her scorched, bloodstained Sand Village flak jacket. Her combat instincts were screaming. She kept scanning the rooftops for sniper nests and checking the alleyways for chokepoints. There were none.

"It’s completely exposed," Pakura muttered, crossing her arms defensively. "There are no defensive perimeters. The guards at the gate are carrying ceremonial spears. A single platoon of Sand shinobi could slaughter this entire city in under an hour."

"And then what?" Ren asked, not looking away from the merchant halls.

Pakura blinked. "What do you mean?"

"Attacking a capital is the ultimate taboo," Ren said smoothly, walking down the pristine street. "Three shinobi world wars, Pakura. Mountains of corpses. Have you ever once heard of a hidden village striking a Daimyo’s court? Have you ever heard of a Kage assassinating a royal noble?"

Pakura went quiet. He was right.

"These aristocrats look weak because they can’t mold chakra," Ren explained, his dark eyes scanning the wealthy crowds. "But they hold the absolute highest power in the world: the purse strings. They provide the national funding that keeps the hidden villages alive. If a Daimyo cuts funding, the village dries up and starves."

Ren glanced back at her. "You should know that better than anyone. I hear the Wind Daimyo has been slashing the Kazekage’s budget for years, forcing your village to outsource missions just to survive. That’s why Rasa is so desperate. That’s why he sold you out for a cheap peace treaty."

Pakura’s hands clenched into fists. The truth stung, but she couldn’t deny it. The untouchable nobles in their silk robes held more power than any S-rank jutsu.

To Ren’s right, Kakuzu grunted in deep, resonant agreement.

The towering missing-nin wasn’t looking at the nobles; his glowing green eyes were completely locked onto a massive, heavily reinforced building down the street.

"The National Reserve," Kakuzu rumbled, pointing a scarred finger. "The stone is thick, but the vault door is a decorative iron alloy. The guards are untrained civilians. I could breach the main vault and liquidate their entire silver supply in less than four minutes."

"We aren’t here to rob the bank, Kakuzu," Ren sighed, leading his two lethal bodyguards away from the plaza. "We are here to make them empty the vault for us voluntarily."

Ren didn’t head for an inn. He had no intention of operating out of a cheap tavern room. Using the massive influx of cash from the Konoha trial sales, Ren marched directly to a licensed estate factor in the commercial district.

Within an hour, Ren had secured a short-term lease on a massive, walled estate in the inner ring, just blocks away from the royal palace.

The estate featured a private courtyard, a koi pond, and a sprawling, hardwood interior. As soon as they entered, Ren began unpacking the wooden crates of Jasmine and Sandalwood soap, laying them out carefully on the long dining table.

"Pakura, secure the perimeter. I want to know all entry and exit points," Ren ordered, tossing his ledger onto the table. "Kakuzu, we have a problem."

Kakuzu looked away from the koi pond, mentally calculating how much the fish were worth. "What is the issue?"

"You," Ren stated bluntly.

He pointed at Kakuzu’s tattered, dark cloak, the crude stitches holding his face together, and the scratched-out Waterfall headband. He then pointed at Pakura, who was inspecting a window lock while wearing a shredded, bloodstained military vest.

"We are about to walk into the highest houses of Fire Country," Ren explained. "Lady Madoka is expecting a master artisan, not a rogue killer and a war refugee. If you walk into the royal court smelling like coagulated blood and radiating killing intent, the Daimyo’s guards will panic, and our contract is dead."

Kakuzu crossed his arms, his eyes narrowing dangerously. "I am an S-rank shinobi. I do not dress up for civilian bureaucrats."

"You do if you want your fifteen percent share of the royal concession," Ren countered smoothly.

"Not a costume," Ren continued, already opening his ledger. "A translation. The court does not understand killing intent. It understands silk, family crests, rank, restraint, and price. So we are going to translate the three of us into a language nobles can survive hearing."

An hour later, a terrified, trembling master tailor was standing in the estate’s living room, holding a measuring tape.

Kakuzu stood perfectly rigid, glaring down at the weeping tailor, who was desperately trying to measure the giant’s impossibly broad shoulders without making eye contact.

"This is a massive waste of funds," Kakuzu growled, staring at himself in a full-length mirror.

He was wearing a formal haori of midnight indigo layered over black and deep forest-green court robes. The fabric was imported silk, heavy enough to hide the crude geography of his stitched body while still falling cleanly over his massive frame. Gold thread traced the hems in restrained, expensive patterns, not bright enough to look decorative, but rich enough that even a blind noble would smell money.

A high wrapped collar covered the lower half of his face, concealing the worst of the stitches and leaving only his terrifying green eyes visible. His wide obi was reinforced, hiding scroll pockets, wire hooks, and enough space for his black threads to move without tearing the cloth apart. The sleeves looked formal, but Ren had ordered hidden vents sewn beneath the arms.

Kakuzu did not look like a rogue ninja anymore.

He looked like the executioner-retainer of a royal merchant house.

"It’s not a waste of funds, Kakuzu, it’s camouflage," Ren said, walking into the room in a charcoal-black formal kimono beneath a short Uchiha haori. The lining was dark red silk, visible only when he moved, and a small fan crest had been embroidered near the sleeve instead of displayed across his back. A narrow merchant’s obi held his ledger, seal papers, and perfume sample slips.

He looked less like a shinobi and more like a young noble artisan who had wandered into court carrying a knife behind his smile.

Ren stood next to Kakuzu in the mirror.

"A man in court robes is not a street thug," Ren smirked. "He is someone with a patron, a price, and the right to stand near important people. Civilians are not afraid you will stab them in the street. They are afraid you represent someone rich enough to ruin their family without drawing a blade."

Ren glanced at Kakuzu’s reflection.

"We are not hiding your intimidation factor. We are giving it manners."

Kakuzu stared at his reflection. He adjusted his expensive cuffs. He noted how the heavy fabric easily concealed his black threads and his hidden scrolls.

"...Acceptable," Kakuzu finally rumbled.

Pakura walked into the room next. The tailor had replaced her scorched Sand flak jacket with a sleeveless guard-kimono in sand-gold and black, cut short enough to let her move and layered over flexible dark leggings. Lacquered bracers covered her forearms, polished enough for court but sturdy enough to catch a blade. Her orange-tipped hair had been washed clean and tied back with a dark ribbon.

She still looked like a kunoichi.

Just no longer like one dragged bleeding out of a betrayal.

She looked at Kakuzu in his noble retainer’s robes, then at Ren, who looked like a miniature aristocrat with an Uchiha smile and a merchant’s ledger.

"I feel like I’ve joined a cult," Pakura muttered, crossing her arms.

"Cults ask you to work for free," Ren replied, walking over to the dining table to inspect the soap displays. "We pay on time."

Before Pakura could retort, a sharp knock echoed from the front gate of the estate.

Pakura instantly dropped into a combat stance, her hands faintly glowing with super-heated orange chakra. Kakuzu’s black threads peeked out from beneath his wide obi.

"Stand down," Ren ordered, walking to the door. "That’s the money."

Ren opened the heavy wooden door. Standing on the porch was a royal courier wearing the crest of the Fire Daimyo. The courier looked past Ren, his eyes briefly widening as he saw the towering, terrifying man in indigo court robes and the lethal desert woman standing behind him.

Swallowing hard, the courier handed Ren an envelope made of heavy, cream-colored parchment, sealed with a massive stamp of gold wax.

"For the Alchemist," the courier said respectfully, bowing deeply. "From the household of Lady Madoka."

Ren broke the gold seal and opened the letter. He quickly scanned the elegant, sweeping calligraphy.

"Well?" Kakuzu asked, his green eyes locked onto the paper.

Ren folded the letter and slid it into his obi. A slow, incredibly sharp smile spread across his face.

"Pack the display boxes," Ren ordered. "Lady Madoka is hosting a private salon in the inner palace tomorrow at noon. We are going to court."
