Chapter 40: The Ghost on the Road

The interior of the gilded carriage was meant for royal lounging, but Ren had already converted it into a mobile corporate office.

The heavy red silk curtains were drawn shut against the afternoon sun. Ren sat on one of the plush velvet benches, entirely ignoring the luxurious surroundings as he aggressively tapped the end of his pen against a clipboard.

"Glass is a logistical nightmare," Ren muttered, crossing out a column of numbers. "If we switch to industrial-scale perfume production, we have to transport thousands of delicate glass vials across hundreds of miles of unpaved, crater-filled ninja roads. The breakage overhead is going to completely cannibalize our margins."

Sitting across from him, taking up two-thirds of the bench, was Kakuzu. The towering missing-nin wasn’t looking out the window; he was intensely studying the ledger.

"We do not use standard wooden crates," Kakuzu rumbled, his stitched mouth barely moving. "We pack the vials in compressed sawdust. It costs a fraction of a ryo per pound at any lumber mill, and it absorbs kinetic shock efficiently. Furthermore, we penalize the transport drivers for any broken inventory. If a vial breaks, it comes out of their wages. It incentivizes careful driving."

Ren looked up from his clipboard, genuinely impressed. "Pass the liability onto the hourly workers. That’s brilliant. Write that into the employee handbook."

Squished into the far corner of the carriage, Lord Kazama was hyperventilating into his ornate folding fan.

The royal envoy had spent the last three hours trapped in a small, enclosed space with an S-rank serial killer and a thirteen-year-old boy who casually discussed exploiting the working class with terrifying efficiency. Kazama was beginning to realize that the Daimyo’s wife hadn’t just invited a merchant to the Capital; she had invited a pair of financial apex predators.

Suddenly, the carriage jerked to a violent halt.

Outside, the ceremonial samurai shouted in alarm, followed instantly by the sickening sound of flesh being pierced. Three heavy thuds hit the dirt road. Then, dead silence.

"Bandits?" Ren asked, not looking up from his clipboard.

Kakuzu’s green eyes narrowed. He didn’t sense the chaotic, undisciplined chakra of highway robbers. He sensed cold, suppressed, highly synchronized killing intent.

"No," Kakuzu said, standing up. The carriage creaked under his massive weight. "Professionals."

Before Kakuzu could reach the door, a barrage of explosive tags blanketed the roof of the carriage.

BOOM!

The explosion tore the gilded roof clean off, showering the interior in burning splinters and shredded red silk. The carriage horses screamed, tearing themselves free from the harnesses and sprinting down the road.

Ren casually brushed a burning piece of wood off his tailored suit. He looked at the ruined ceiling, deeply annoyed. "There goes our ride."

Kakuzu cracked his knuckles, the sound echoing like breaking stones, and stepped out of the smoking wreckage.

Surrounding the carriage were twelve masked shinobi. They wore standard black tactical gear, but there were no village headbands, no identifying clan crests, and their porcelain masks were completely blank.

Danzo’s Root Squad had arrived.

The Root captain stood at the front, his poisoned tantō drawn. He looked at the giant stepping out of the carriage, his eyes widening behind his blank mask. Danzo hadn’t briefed them on an S-rank mercenary escort.

Kakuzu’s glowing green eyes scanned the twelve elite assassins. He wasn’t looking at their weapons or their stances. He was running their physical descriptions through his encyclopedic mental bingo book.

"Blank masks. Unregistered tactical gear. Suppressed chakra signatures," Kakuzu deduced, his voice dropping into a low, furious growl. "You are black-ops. A village ghost squad."

Kakuzu reached into his cloak, his skin hardening into an impenetrable, dark iron hue using his Earth Spear jutsu.

"You don’t exist on paper," Kakuzu snarled, his killing intent exploding outward like a physical shockwave. "Which means you have absolutely zero black-market bounty value. You are a complete waste of my time, and you just damaged company property."

The Root captain didn’t hesitate. "Target the carriage! Burn it to ashes!"

The twelve ANBU blurred into motion, weaving hand seals at blinding speed. A massive barrage of fireballs and wind blades launched toward the carriage.

Kakuzu didn’t even bother taking off his cloak.

Thick, black, whip-like threads erupted from his wrists and back. He moved with terrifying, brutal efficiency. He intercepted the fireballs with his hardened forearms, completely ignoring the heat. His black threads shot forward like vipers, wrapping around the throats and ankles of the ANBU.

Root operatives were trained to feel no fear and show no mercy. But they had never fought a monster from the First Hokage’s era.

Kakuzu didn’t use flashy elemental jutsu. He used pure, overwhelming physical violence. He yanked two operatives out of the air, slamming them into the ground with enough force to shatter their spines. He caught a wind blade with his bare hand, crushing the chakra construct before driving his fist cleanly through the chest of a third assassin.

Blood sprayed across the dirt road.

Inside the ruined carriage, Kazama was curled into a fetal position, screaming in pure terror.

Ren was still sitting on the velvet bench, holding up his clipboard to shield it from the splashing blood. He sighed heavily.

"Kakuzu! Wrap it up!" Ren called out over the sound of snapping bones. "Every minute we spend on the road is bleeding our schedule! I have a meeting with the Daimyo’s wife at sundown!"

"I am liquidating the liabilities!" Kakuzu roared back, his black threads completely dismembering the remaining Root assassins.

In less than sixty seconds, it was over.

Twelve of Danzo Shimura’s most elite, cold-blooded killers lay dead on the road. Kakuzu stood in the center of the carnage, his cloak spotless. He looked down at the bodies, visibly disgusted by the fact that he couldn’t cash them in.

"We are walking the rest of the way," Kakuzu announced, retracting his threads.

Ren stepped out of the broken carriage, stepping over a severed arm. He looked at the blank masks of the dead assassins.

"Konoha black-ops," Ren noted, adjusting his collar. "Danzo really didn’t want me building that factory. He actually sent an assassination squad to stop a soap supply chain."

"Corporate sabotage is standard in high-margin industries," Kakuzu replied, bending down to pick up the Root captain’s dropped tantō. He inspected the steel. "These weapons are high-grade chakra metal. I am confiscating them to cover the carriage damage."

Ren nodded approvingly. "Good initiative, CFO. Let’s move."

Deep underground, in the cold, windowless archives of Root Headquarters, Danzo Shimura was waiting.

He sat at his desk, staring at the flickering candle in the corner of the room. By his calculations, Alpha Squad had intercepted the royal carriage an hour ago. The Uchiha boy was dead. The threat was eliminated. The village was safe.

The heavy stone door creaked open.

A Root scout entered the room. The operative was trembling. He didn’t kneel. He just stood there, completely frozen.

"Report," Danzo ordered sharply. "Is the Mangekyō user dead?"

"Lord Danzo..." the scout choked out, his voice laced with unfiltered, absolute terror. "Alpha Squad is gone. They were wiped out completely."

Danzo’s visible eye widened. "What do you mean, wiped out? Did the royal samurai ambush them?"

"The samurai fled into the woods before the engagement even started," the scout said, swallowing hard. "I observed the aftermath from the treeline. Lord Danzo, there were no burn marks. There were no crater impacts from standard ninjutsu. The bodies of Alpha Squad were... they were physically torn apart. Crushed by an overwhelming, invisible force of brute strength."

Danzo’s blood ran colder than ice.

He gripped his cane, his knuckles turning white. His mind raced back to the terrifying legends of his youth. He remembered Madara Uchiha standing on the battlefield. He remembered the towering, spectral ribs of the Susanoo—an avatar of pure, indestructible chakra that could crush elite shinobi like insects.

"He didn’t even step out of the carriage," the scout whispered, delivering the final, crushing blow to Danzo’s sanity. "The boy just sat there, and Alpha Squad was slaughtered in less than a minute."

Danzo slumped back into his chair.

It was worse than he ever imagined. The boy hadn’t just awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan. He had mastered it. He had manifested the Susanoo to completely eradicate twelve elite ANBU without lifting a single finger.

Danzo stared at the map of the Fire Capital on his wall, a profound sense of helplessness washing over him.

His bureaucratic blockade had failed. His elite assassins were dead. And now, the Ghost of Madara Uchiha was walking straight into the Royal Court, entirely unopposed.
