Li Yu left the bustling kitchen of the Fiery Lotus Pavilion as the evening quieted down and found a secluded spot in the rear courtyard. He needed a moment of peace away from the roaring stone stoves and the clattering iron pans, mainly just the noise. He pulled a communication token from his spatial ring and infused a small amount of Qi into the smooth surface.
A warm light pulsed from the stone as he sent a message to Lian. He asked if she was available to meet him the following morning to enjoy the local culinary festival. A few moments passed before the token vibrated in his palm and Lian's voice echoed in his mind as she agreed to meet him and they agreed on the location just outside the gates of Crimson Hearth City. A wide smile spread across Li Yu’s face as he tucked the token away and spent the rest of the night anticipating her arrival.
The morning sun cast a bright golden glow over the tall stone walls of Crimson Hearth City. Li Yu stood near a quiet patch of trees just off the main road while watching the sky and waiting patiently. The space before him rippled like a calm pond disturbed by a falling leaf and a tear in the fabric of the realm opened up. Lian stepped out from the void wearing an elegant dress woven from dark crimson silk, clearly ready to enjoy the day casually. Her dark hair caught the morning breeze and she offered him a warm smile that made his breath catch in his throat.
Li Yu felt his heart hammer against his ribs as he looked at her. He had missed her deeply during his time recovering and then while training in the kitchen to control his new found strength. A sudden surge of boldness washed over his mind before he could even think about what he was doing or plan his next steps. He stepped forward quickly and wrapped his arms around her in a deep and long hug.
Lian let out a soft gasp of surprise as she felt his arms pull her close. She had actually wanted to give him a big hug herself after witnessing his terrifying tribulation but she was surprised that he had acted first. She melted into the embrace and wrapped her own arms around his waist while resting her head gently against his shoulder.
Li Yu pulled back just enough to look into her dark eyes and decided to push his luck even further. He leaned in for a kiss while trying to recall the theoretical knowledge he had studied from those hidden manuals Elder Jin had provided. He tried to apply a specific technique he had read about but his lack of practical experience made his movements clumsy. He stepped on the hem of his own robe and his lips met hers in a rushed and eager motion that lacked the smooth grace of their previous encounters.
Lian was surprised once again by his sudden aggression but she gladly went with the flow. She adjusted her posture to keep them balanced and met his awkward passion with her own gentle rhythm. They shared a long kiss beneath the morning sun before they finally parted.
Li Yu took a step back and his cheeks flared with a bright red blush as his senses finally returned to him. He realized how chaotic his actions had been and he felt very embarrassed by his actions and more so his lack of coordination.
"I am so sorry for attacking you like that," Li Yu stammered while rubbing the back of his neck and looking away. "I just missed you and I could not help myself."
Lian covered her mouth and a melodic chuckle escaped her lips. She found his sudden shift in demeanor entertaining and highly endearing.
"You were so bold just a moment ago like a soaring dragon," Lian teased him while taking a step closer. "But now you are acting meek like a little rat. Which one is the real Li Yu?"
"I read some things and thought I knew what I was doing," Li Yu admitted openly before realizing it to stop himself. "It turns out reading about things does not translate well to actually doing them in practice."

Lian reached out and gently rested her hand against his cheek. "It is fine, Li Yu. I enjoyed it and I do not mind you being more bold in the future. Sometimes boldness is what wins battles."
Her reassuring words and warm smile melted his embarrassment away. He gestured towards the city as they began walking toward the bustling city gates to enjoy their day together.
Crimson Hearth City was transformed into a vibrant paradise of food and music for this festival. Banners in shades of bright red and gold hung from the rooftops while strings of paper lanterns crisscrossed the busy streets. The air was thick with the rich aromas of cooking meats and sweet pastries as vendors called out to the passing crowds.
Cultivators and mortals walked shoulder to shoulder while sampling exotic dishes from distant regions. Cultivators were taking time to entertain children on the street corners by using fancy techniques such as fire breathing or having their flying swords perform tricks. Traveling musicians played lively tunes on wooden string instruments as everyone was enjoying this peaceful day.
Li Yu guided Lian through the packed avenues until they reached the grand square where the Fiery Lotus Pavilion had set up their main festival operations. The Ding Clan occupied a prominent section of the square with a sprawling outdoor dining area surrounded by beautiful flower arrangements and glowing crystal formations.
Ding Tung spotted his honored guest approaching and hurried over with a bright smile. The clan leader stopped in his tracks when he noticed the beautiful woman walking with Li Yu. Ding Tung possessed a sharp mind of someone used to dealing with people and quickly understood that this woman was incredibly special to Li Yu.
The clan leader also knew that festivals often attracted arrogant young masters who liked to cause trouble over beautiful women. Ding Tung wanted to ensure no one was stupid enough to bother this couple and end up getting killed in his dining area, it would be bad for business. He needed to provide a secure environment to protect both his guests and his own property. Mainly to make sure this expert would not have a bad time today.
"Welcome, senior," Ding Tung greeted them with a deep and respectful bow. "We are honored to host you and your esteemed companion today. I have prepared a private table for you on the raised balcony overlooking the square. It offers the best view of the festivities and provides a quiet space away from the dense crowds."
"Thank you, Ding Tung," Li Yu replied while offering a polite nod and smile. He had not asked the clan leader for this but very much appreciated it. "That sounds perfect for us."
The clan leader personally escorted them up a winding wooden staircase to a secluded balcony draped in sheer silk curtains. The private table was carved from rich mahogany and set with fine porcelain dishware. A gentle breeze blew through the curtains and brought the lively sounds of the festival up to them without the overwhelming noise of the street level.

Waiters quickly arrived and delivered a steady stream of appetizers to their table. There were skewers of glazed spirit poultry and small bowls of savory mushroom broth. Li Yu and Lian sat close together on a plush bench and shared the delicious food while watching the colorful performances happening in the square below.

Li Yu picked up a sweet pastry and offered it to Lian, continuing to be bold. His near death experience had taught him the value of doing things he wanted to do while he could. It could have all ended back then and he would have been filled with so many regrets.
Lian accepted the treat with a smile and leaned in to give him a quick kiss on the cheek before taking a bite. Lian was never a meek person herself when it came to anything she did. Whether it was in commanding her troops, killing her enemies or setting up logistics, she had always been fierce and bold. When it came to matters of the heart, she was still the same way but matters of the heart involved two people. She wasn’t as experienced in this area, so she had rarely taken the lead and let Li Yu make the moves because she was never sure what Li Yu was ready for. Seeing him be more bold and pushing forward faster made her respond in kind.
The casual affection made Li Yu’s chest swell with happiness but it also brought back memories of the dark moments he had recently endured. The contrast between this bright day and the dark storm of his heavenly punishment weighed heavily on his mind. He set his chopsticks down and looked at the vibrant festival happening around them.
"When I was facing the tribulation," Li Yu began with a quiet and serious tone that changed the mood completely. "There were many moments where I truly thought I was going to die. The lightning was tearing my flesh apart and my foundation felt like it was crumbling into dust. The pain was beyond anything I had ever experienced and the scale of the cosmic judgment made me feel so incredibly small and powerless."
Lian stopped chewing and set her own food down. Her dark eyes softened as she gave him her full attention. She reached across the table and took his hand while weaving her fingers through his.
"It was terrifying to watch," Lian confessed while squeezing his hand tight. She surprised even herself with being so open, something she has rarely done outside of her parents and close generals. "Seeing you reduced to almost a skeleton shocked me and everyone else. I gripped my weapon so hard my palms nearly bled and I wanted to break through the barrier to fight the heavens with you. I knew I would only make it worse if I interfered but I felt so helpless standing there while you suffered."
"So you saw it… I figured you did with what my grandfather had told me. You being there physically and spiritually helped me more than you know," Li Yu told her while looking deep into her eyes. "I was terrified of dying and believed that I would. But my goals and my dreams were the reasons I was able to keep going. I thought about the future I wanted to build and the people I wanted to protect. I thought about you and how much I wanted to see you again. Those thoughts anchored me when the lightning tried to erase me from existence."
Upon hearing his honest thoughts, Lian offered him a bright and genuine smile that rivaled the morning sun.
"I am very happy that you made it through that storm, we all are." Lian said with a smile. "You survived the wrath of the heavens and you gained a lot of strength from it. You are still here with me and that is all that matters now."
Li Yu leaned across the table and captured her lips in a tender and lingering kiss once more. The clumsy urgency from the morning was gone and replaced by a deep and steady affection. They parted slowly and rested their foreheads together for a brief moment while finding comfort in their shared presence.
The solemn atmosphere that Li Yu created soon gave way to the joyous energy of the festival after some time had passed. They returned their attention to the grand feast laid out before them and spent the next few hours sampling the various dishes the Ding Clan had prepared as well as dishes from all the other establishments.
Ding Tung made sure to have a bit of everything be brought up there for them over time. Li Yu pointed out the specific cooking techniques he had practiced and explained how the chefs achieved such rich flavors.

Lian listened to his enthusiastic explanations and occasionally fed him bites of food just to see him blush a bit more. They shared quiet jokes and stole small kisses between courses while enjoying the safety of their private balcony. The day was filled with vibrant colors and beautiful melodies provided by wandering musicians passing through the streets below.
As the afternoon wore on, the main event of the culinary festival began in the central square. Ding Tung and Elder Pan presented the Geode Turtle dish to the panel of judges. The rich and earthy aroma drifted all the way up to their balcony and Lian raised an eyebrow in surprise.
"That smells incredible," Lian noted while looking down at the crowd gathering around the presentation table. "What kind of beast is that?"
"That is a very stubborn turtle," Li Yu explained with a proud smile on his face. "I actually helped them prepare the meat yesterday. It required a very fierce fire to break down the internal muscles without ruining the flavor. My destructive flame was what they needed to get the job done."
They watched the judges sample the tender meat and ultimately declare the Fiery Lotus Pavilion the winner of the event. The crowd erupted into cheers and the Ding Clan members celebrated their grand victory. Li Yu felt a sense of satisfaction knowing he had helped the kind chefs achieve their goal after they had shown him so much patience. He wrapped his arm around Lian's waist and pulled her close as they continued to enjoy the vibrant festival stretching out before them.
The afternoon sun slowly dipped toward the horizon and painted the sky in shades of deep purple and warm orange. The paper lanterns strung across the city streets began to glow brighter as the shadows lengthened and the festival transitioned into its evening celebrations. Li Yu and Lian left their private balcony and decided to walk among the crowds to experience the lively atmosphere up close like a couple.
They wandered through the busy merchant stalls and admired the intricate craftsmanship of the local artisans. Li Yu bought a pair of matching carved wooden bracelets from an elderly vendor and gently tied one around Lian's wrist. She admired the delicate floral patterns etched into the wood and rewarded him with a sweet kiss on the cheek.
The evening air was filled with laughter and the rhythmic beating of heavy drums as a parade of dancers wove their way through the main avenue. The dancers wore elaborate costumes resembling the mythical beasts of ancient legends and they twirled bright ribbons of silk that caught the lantern light. Li Yu held Lian's hand tight to ensure they were not separated by the shifting crowds but mainly using it as an excuse to just hold her hand as they enjoyed the spectacle together.
'Moments like these are why cultivators, or at least myself, suffer through cultivation.' Li Yu thought while looking at Lian's bright smile. 'No battles to fight and no heavenly judgments to survive tonight. Just a simple night enjoying the world with someone I really care about.'
They stopped by a stall selling sweet frozen treats made from crushed ice and fruit nectar. The two shared a bowl while sitting on a stone bench near a bubbling fountain in the center of a quiet park. The noise of the main festival was muffled by the surrounding trees and they enjoyed another moment of comfortable silence.
Li Yu looked at the stars beginning to peek through the twilight sky and felt a sense of gratitude. The struggles he had endured recently felt distant and small compared to the warmth spreading through his chest right now. He knew the martial path would inevitably bring more challenges and dangerous enemies but he was determined to hold onto these quiet moments to fuel his own mental strength.
He leaned over and pressed his lips against hers under the fading light. The two lingered there on the stone bench while the culinary festival continued to rage on around them as they found their own private world hidden within the chaotic celebration.
