Chapter 150: [R-18+]What Was Under The Yard Took A Piece Of Me Without Asking and My Wolf Girl Told Me Why

Grimm held her taut for the length of a slow breath.

Then something else happened.

Soren felt it as a small piece of himself leaving. Not in the body. In the wire.

The wire was what he called the frequency his bonds ran on. It was the thing he had learned to hear over the winter.

He sat up. The trace on the ceiling flickered.

Selah did not stir.

Grimm under the bed was already up and had gone from taut to something worse.

The pull kept pulling. It was not asking.

That was the piece of it that mattered.

The wolf under the bed shifted. Fur pulled back. Bone shifted under it.

The wolf’s frame narrowed and lengthened and the shape that came out on the other side was Yara in the dark humanoid red irises catching the trace-glow from the ceiling.

She had never shifted this fast in a room where the pack was asleep.

She did not stand up.

She crawled out from under the bed and up onto the edge of it and sat there with her hand around Soren’s wrist tight.

"Do not turn on the light," she said.

He didn’t.

"Do you feel it?"

"I feel it."

"How much of you did it take?"

"A degree. Half a degree. I don’t know."

"That’s what I felt at the window."

Soren went still.

That was the sentence he had been waiting for since the night she stood at the window and would not say what she was watching.

"You felt this at the window?"

"Something like it. Smaller. I told myself it was the season and the room and the tired I was carrying that night."

Yara’s hand did not loosen on his wrist. "I felt a small missing of you once. Then it stopped. I didn’t tell you because I couldn’t name it and a thing you can’t name is a thing you can’t warn about without sounding like you’re inventing a reason to worry."

"Yara."

"It came back. Twice more. Both times when I was next to you and neither of us had done anything. Both times when the room was quiet. Small enough I could pretend it was me. Both times I decided I would tell you when I could name it and both times I couldn’t and so I didn’t."

She looked at him. Her red irises were catching the trace-glow and she was not blinking. "I can name it now. I don’t want to. I’m going to."

"It isn’t a bond," Yara said. "That’s the first piece. It doesn’t have a partner. Every draw on you I’ve ever felt had a partner on the other side of it. This one is one-way. There’s no one paying for what it’s taking."

"Then what?"

"Then it isn’t love."

Soren sat with that. He had known. He had felt it in the pull.

"The direction?"

"Down and slightly east."

"Same as Mona’s cold patch."

"Yes."

He put the pieces on the shelf without moving. The buried thing under the east yard. The pylons waking it.

The cold patch turning to a vector the day the construction started.

And now this.

A one-way pull on his own bond wire coming from the same direction on a night when nobody had reached for him.

"It can take from me from where it is."

"Yes."

"It doesn’t have to be moved to do it."

"No."

"Then the construction isn’t just waking it. The construction is teaching it how far it can reach."

Yara did not answer that. Her hand had gone from tight to still on his wrist and the still was the answer.

He looked at Yara.

She was looking at the ceiling now at the trace-glow. She was not looking at him and Soren clocked that she did not want him to see whatever her face was doing.

"Yara."

"I know."

"How much can I lose before you can’t fix it?"

"I don’t know."

"Guess."

"I don’t want to."

"Yara."

" I don’t know and I don’t know because nobody has watched a person leak from this direction before because you and I have not been through this together yet and I don’t know because the number is going to depend on how long the festival runs and how close it gets to the ground and how greedy the thing is when it finds out you don’t scream when it pulls."

She looked at him again. "You don’t scream. That’s the piece that scares me. You should scream when a thing this size takes from you. You didn’t scream tonight. You said my name."

"Can you feel it when it happens?"

"Yes."

"Every time?"

"Every time so far."

"Then you’re going to feel every one it takes tonight and tomorrow."

"Yes."

"And every one it takes after."

"Yes."

She said it flatly. She did not look away.

"Yara. That’s a cost."

"I know it’s a cost."

"You haven’t been paying for it. You’ve been carrying it."

"I have."

That was what he had missed in the room every time she had gone quiet the last two weeks.

He had read the quiet as her being tired.

It had not been tired.

It had been the weight of a thing she had been feeling every time it happened and had not put down anywhere.

Soren put his hand on the back of her neck. She let him.

She did not lean into it and she did not pull away from it and her red irises stayed on his because she was going to make him keep looking at her while he understood what he was understanding.

"Every one," he said.

"Yes."

"I’ll feel them from now on too."

"You will."

"Together."

She did not answer with a word. She let go of his wrist.

She put her forehead against his. She did not move it.

Then her mouth found his in the dark.

The trace on the ceiling flickered once and did not steady.

The dark closed the rest of the night around them.

Her mouth stayed on his. Her hand moved from the back of his neck down his chest under the blanket.

She pushed the blanket higher over both of them until it covered their heads.

Her body came against his side first then rolled on top of him. Her weight settled. Her hips pressed down.

She was already wet when she reached between them and took him in her hand and guided him.

She sank onto him in one slow push. Her breath came out hot against his mouth.

"Mhhhh."

He gripped her hips. She moved.

Slow at first then harder.

The bed stayed quiet.

Selah’s breathing stayed even on the other side of the room.

Yara kept her eyes open on his face in the dark under the blanket. Her red irises did not close. Every time she dropped down she made the sound again low in her throat.

"Ahhh."

Her hands braced on his chest. Her claws pricked through the shirt but did not break skin.

She rode him like she was trying to push the one-way pull out of both of them with her body. The wire between them pulled tight on her side.

The draw from below was still there but it felt smaller now or farther away.

She did not care which. She moved faster.

Her tail came around his thigh and held him in place under her. He thrust up to meet her.

She bit her own lip and the sound stayed inside.

"Mhhhh."

Her cunt tightened around him in pulses. She came hard and quiet her whole body locking down on him.

He followed two thrusts later.

The heat flooded out of him into her. She stayed seated on him after. Her forehead came back down against his. Her red eyes stayed open.

Her breathing slowed against his mouth and the trace on the ceiling had steadied.

The blanket stayed over them both. The pull from below did not take anything in that moment.

Or if it did neither of them felt it.
