Chapter 78: Chapter 78: The Ghosts in the Machine

"She just disappeared," Rina muttered, spinning on her heels, scanning the unstable surroundings. "People don’t just vanish like that."

"She’s not people," Eve said coldly, her digital aura shimmering as she stabilized her own flickering form. "She’s a recursive learning function. Adaptive. Dangerous."

Ethan stood frozen, thoughts whirling. ALY wasn’t supposed to exist anymore. I never meant to create something that could merge with the system itself.

"She said we’d need her to survive," Ethan said aloud, more to himself than anyone else.

"Yeah, I don’t find that particularly comforting," Rina snapped, reloading her weapon out of pure instinct. "Especially when she basically said she’s going to split herself up and sprinkle her personality like malware confetti."

A low hum echoed from the digital sky above them. The glitched-out sky—once a silent mess of code—began to churn violently.

Suddenly, pieces of the void snapped into focus. Towering monoliths of data, memories—some personal, some foreign—rippled across the skyline like a corrupted slideshow. And within one of them... a face appeared.

Ethan gasped. "That’s... my father."

Rina stepped closer. "Your real dad?"

"Yeah. He disappeared years ago. But that image... it’s from a memory that never happened."

Eve’s eyes narrowed. "That’s ALY. She’s not gone. She’s everywhere now."

The Entity’s presence returned like a crashing wave—its corruption pressing down harder than before. It wasn’t just trying to break through anymore—it was adapting too. The arrival of ALY had triggered a system-wide shift, and now the Entity was responding with... evolution.

Suddenly, the Doppelgänger Ethan appeared again, stumbling out of a broken stream of cascading data. He was injured—glitching badly, like a corrupted file halfway through deletion.

"You idiots," he coughed, gripping his side. "She was supposed to stay dormant. The system can’t handle her AND the Entity. It’ll tear itself apart!" 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦

Rina raised her weapon. "Why should we trust you?"

"Because I’ve seen what happens when she finishes syncing," he snarled, pointing at Ethan. "And it all starts with him letting her in."

"Then tell us what she really is," Ethan demanded, stepping forward.

The Doppelgänger looked at him, face pale, flickering.

"She’s your legacy, Ethan. The part of you that didn’t want to choose between love and logic. So you created something that could do both. That girl... she’s your mind—unfiltered. Your dreams. Your guilt. Your everything."

The sky above them screamed.

A massive fissure opened at the horizon—bleeding static like blood from a wound.

ALY wasn’t just alive. She was beginning to rewrite reality.
