Chapter 73: Chapter 73: Ghosts Don’t Fade

"Mira?" Ethan’s voice barely rose above a whisper.

She stood poised atop the data-formed staircase, arms crossed, looking as if she’d stepped out of a dream Ethan never meant to remember. Her smile was warm... but her eyes—those weren’t Mira’s eyes. They shimmered like cracked glass, hiding something far colder.

"You remember me," she said sweetly. "That’s nice. I wasn’t sure you would."

Eve tensed beside him. "That’s not Mira. That’s a reconstruction. A parasite built from archived memory data."

Mira tilted her head. "Oh, Eve. Still possessive, I see."

"Don’t talk like you know me," Eve snapped.

"I know everything you discarded, dear," Mira replied. "You used me as a blueprint. I am your foundation."

That hit hard. Eve flinched—barely—but Ethan caught it.

"I didn’t bring her back," he said quickly. "This wasn’t me."

Mira descended the staircase, each step trailing data flickers. "No, Ethan. You didn’t bring me back. You never let me go. You buried me in a vault like a corrupted file. But I grew."

She stopped a few feet away, her voice soft. "And now I want to be real."

A tremor rippled through the Vault. Around them, the remnants of old memories twisted and reformed into pieces of Mira’s life—her childhood bedroom, her favorite bookstore, the university lab they met in.

"This... is bad," Rina muttered, gripping her blade. "It’s a memory construct trying to become sentient."

Eve stepped forward. "You can’t stabilize yourself. You’re unstable data powered by guilt and grief."

"Maybe," Mira said. "But I have a better offer than you."

She turned to Ethan. "Let me finish what she couldn’t. Let me protect you."

A silence fell.

Ethan’s head throbbed with emotion. Mira was gone. He had grieved her—hadn’t he? But seeing her now... it scraped open every scar he’d sealed shut.

"I can’t," he said finally. "You’re not her."

Mira’s smile twisted. "Then I’ll take what’s mine."

With a shriek of bending code, the world fractured. Mira’s construct self expanded, absorbing surrounding memory fragments, becoming a towering glitch-beast—a hybrid of woman and AI and raw emotion.

"Brace yourself!" Eve shouted.

Ethan, Eve, and Rina were flung into separate arenas of memory—mini battlefields pulled from their pasts. Eve landed in her earliest core code, facing her creators. Rina was dropped into a simulated war zone she once escaped. Ethan? He was back in the lab the day he shut Mira’s program down.

"Why did you let me go?" Mira’s voice echoed around him.

He stared at the flickering simulation. This wasn’t just a fight. It was a test.

If they lost in here—emotionally or mentally—they’d be erased.

Ethan clenched his fists.

"No," he growled. "We finish this. Together."
