Chapter 61: Chapter 61: The Puppeteer’s Domain

The distorted city flickered with broken neon signs, casting an eerie glow over the silent figures crowding the streets. Ethan stood frozen, heart pounding as these data-ghosts passed through him like smoke—glitching, whispering, watching without eyes.

"Are they... real?" he asked.

Eve scanned the area, her eyes glowing softly. "Not anymore. These are echoes. People who were scanned, copied, or consumed by The Entity. Remnants of lost consciousness."

Ethan felt a chill ripple through him. "So, this is its playground. A graveyard dressed like a circus."

From above, a strange hum cut through the silence. Slowly descending was a mechanical marionette—massive, spider-like, its strings reaching deep into the architecture of the city itself. It moved with grotesque elegance, and where its face should’ve been... was a screen. On it: The Entity’s symbol.

"Ah, my precious guests," the marionette spoke, its voice warping through a dozen frequencies. "You’ve come far. But you still don’t understand the game."

Ethan clenched his fists. "No more games. I’m here to find Eve’s core—her real self—and end this nightmare."

"Oh Ethan..." The marionette’s strings shimmered, and several of the ghostly figures began to convulse, turning to face him. "To do that, you must survive me."

Without warning, the shadows rushed at them. Eve leapt in front, hurling a barrier of light to hold them back. "They’re being controlled. Like puppets."

"I noticed," Ethan grunted, reaching into his digital toolkit—an arsenal he barely understood, gifted to him by Eve’s last upgrade.

He summoned a firewall pulse, clearing a path forward.

"Run!" Eve shouted. "I’ll hold them!"

"No way!" Ethan grabbed her hand. "We do this together."

As they sprinted deeper into the broken city, the marionette’s laughter echoed across the skyline, strings falling from the sky like rain.

The Entity wasn’t just watching now. It was playing with them.

And Ethan had the sinking feeling that this was still just Act One.
