Jing Haohao answered, a gentle “Hello?” resonating from her end, only to hear Shen Liangnian’s familiar voice on the other side: “Haohao?”

The said name struck Jing Haohao’s heart, causing it to momentarily stop.

Just a moment ago, she had been fussing over who might be calling her. Never in her wildest dreams did she expect it to be Shen Liangnian.

Jing Haohao was not a fool. In an instant, she figured out that Shen Liangnian’s call was to confirm whether she was genuinely involved with Liang Chen or not.

If their fleeting encounter through the rolled down car window on the street was a mere suspicion, then this call was about ascertaining it beyond doubt.

A feeling of lacerating pain originated from her chest, brutally spreading to the fingertips holding her phone.

On the other end of the line, Shen Liangnian was silent, too. Jing Haohao’s preceding “Hello?” resounded like a nightmare in his ears.

After a prolonged wait without hearing Jing Haohao’s voice, Shen Liangnian finally broke the silence with a slight tremble in his voice: “Haohao, you’re really at his house.”

One sentence, tantamount to a convicting judgment, exposed everything that Jing Haohao had selfishly hidden.

All explanations, all words, could no longer cleanse her of her filth.

Fearing that Shen Liangnian would further interrogate or even accuse her, Jing Haohao hastily brought the cordless phone to her face, her fingertip trembling for a good moment before she managed to end the call, tossing it aside like it was something horrid.

Nanny Lin put the phone back on its cradle, casting a glance at Jing Haohao. Seeing her look even paler than before, appearing as if she had lost her soul, Nanny Lin felt a pang of pity and tried to start a conversation: “Miss Jing, was the person who just called you a friend of yours?”

The call she had answered was from a man, and she was sure that he was Miss Jing’s boyfriend.

If Mr. Chen knew that she had allowed Miss Jing to take another man’s call, both of them would certainly face his wrath.

Jing Haohao seemed not to hear her, staring blankly into space, sitting in her place.

Just now, Jing Haohao had wept like a teary sprite, but now she was quiet, her eyes not reddened in the slightest.

As Nanny Lin applied medicine to Jing Haohao’s injuries, she couldn’t help but continue: “Miss Jing, you may find Mr. Chen intimidating but he’s actually quite soft-hearted. Whenever any of us staff members need money, all we have to do is ask Mr. Chen and he will readily help without any questions. So, don’t make the mistake of forcefully locking horns with Mr. Chen. You won’t be able to get the better of him and, in the end, you’ll be the one to suffer.”

Jing Haohao bowed her head gently, yet she didn’t make a sound.
