Having someone help manage the restaurant was the best choice.
The "Midnight Chef" program was recorded in several sessions, and throughout the process, all participating chefs had to stay on-site to cooperate. In each episode, there would be a different competition format, with early eliminations. The entire food program was geared towards entertainment and variety. This led to a mixed bag of talents in the auditions, a chaotic gathering of all sorts of people. However, there were also many who came to challenge the Godās Tongue.
The underground chef community was very closed off. They couldnāt get official competition qualifications from proper institutions to participate in large-scale events. To gain fame, they either had to "kick down the doors" of renowned celebrity chefs or appear on food-related shows like this to promote themselves.
However, most food programs had review segments that werenāt very popular. People have their pride, especially in their areas of expertise. Having their meticulously prepared, impeccable dishes reviewed by a group of "idiots" who knew nothing was quite depressing. As for "kicking down doors," that was even more awkward. In this day and age, who still played that game? Even if you wanted to challenge someone, they might not accept.
Accepting a challenge took time, effort, and risking embarrassment if you lost, with no gain if you won. Anyone with a bit of sense wouldnāt accept such a challenge. This made it increasingly difficult for underground chefs to make a name for themselves.
Inside Renzās apartment, Erina was carrying a suitcase and also helping Renz pack his belongings.
"Renz, in this program, from what I recall, there arenāt many truly formidable characters," Erina said while packing.
"Not many? I remember the champion, runner-up, and third-place winners of the first season were all renowned chefs later, right?" Renzās mouth twitched slightly. While "renowned chefs" might not mean much to the two of them, you couldnāt underestimate others that much.
"Rindo Kobayashi even took second place in this show," Renz mentioned a familiar name. "Speaking of which, I even took a month-long leave from school specifically for this program," Renz said, stretching his limbs.
The value of this program wasnāt in the small financial gain for the champion, but in the increase in fame. Furthermore, to quickly restore his cooking level, high-intensity cooking competitions were essential.
The question was, "Erina, why are you also bringing a suitcase?" Renz asked, staring at her carry-on. The original plan was for Erina to stay at the apartment and look after Mashiro Shiina for a month.
However, Erina righteously refused and instead handed the task to Hisako Arato. Renz thought Erina had something else going on that made it inconvenient for her to care for Mashiro, but then Erina showed up with a suitcase.
"Obviously, Iām participating in the program with you," Erina rolled her eyes. "This program has a friends and family segment. With me supporting you, wonāt your chances of winning the competition multiply?"
"While thatās true, wouldnāt you be revealing our relationship to the audience?" Renz pondered. "Currently, only your grandfather knows about us, right?"
"Whatās the impact?" Erina didnāt think this was a problem. "Are you afraid of the immense public pressure that comes with being Erinaās boyfriend?" At this, Erina gave Renz a "scornful" look. "Donāt worry, when the time comes, Iāll just announce that youāre my kept man."
Renz was indeed concerned about public pressure, but he had strong resilience, having played professional e-sports. Dealing with internet trolls was something every player encountered, so he wasnāt afraid of being insulted; he might even laugh if someone insulted him. But Erina was different.
You might think she had strong resilience, but she was actually super fragile and could easily break down with a few words. Renz wasnāt afraid of the public pressure of being Erinaās boyfriend. He was worried about Erina finding an "average male lead" type of nobody as a boyfriend and being verbally attacked by angry Japanese netizens.
"Alright, you can come with me then," Renz asked again, "What about when we run into your mom?" This was quite awkward. "How do we explain our relationship?" Renz asked.
"Just tell her the truth, whatās there to be afraid of?" Erina answered quickly. "How are things going with your restaurant?"
"I found two apprentices," Renz had made progress on this matter. The apprentices he referred to were Meiko Shiraki and Miyuki Shirogane. He truly hadnāt expected the cooking club to have such genuinely skilled individuals. Meiko Shiraki was practically a divinely drawn candidate.
During cooking practice in the club, Meiko Shirakiās cooking level was clearly a cut above the rest. These past few days, Renz had been at school, teaching the secrets of his ramen to Meiko Shiraki and Miyuki Shirogane. However, Meiko Shiraki didnāt seem to be in it for the money; she was willing to help as an apprentice only because Renz taught her cooking. As for President Shirogane, his cooking skills were decent for a self-taught amateur.
This guy, though not necessarily talented in cooking, was incredibly hardworking. At school, when he taught them a dish, Meiko Shirakiās proficiency was far superior to Miyuki Shiroganeās. Yet, in just a few days, Miyuki Shiroganeās ramen skills had caught up to Meiko Shirakiās.
This way, the apprentices for the restaurant were found, and Renz had saved himself some time.
"All the luggage is packed. Weāre staying here tonight," Erina said, closing Renzās suitcase and clapping her hands.
"Where should I sleep?" Erina said thoughtfully. Wicked woman. Damn it.
"Mashiro is used to sleeping alone, so how about we..." Renz asked in a negotiating tone, "Make do with one bed?" Renz got excited. He was truly excited. This was much more exciting than the Totsuki Academy friendly match. How long has it been since he slept with his wifeās slender waist in his arms? If he could even rub his face against her, it would be even more... blissful.
"Is Cousin staying tonight?" Mashiro Shiina, still engrossed in the TV program, asked, "I can clear a room for you."
"Then you can sleep in my room." Erinaās heart warmed. Mashiro, this child, actually knew how to be considerate of others now.
"I taught her well, didnāt I? Mashiro can now wash up by herself," Renz said proudly. Taking care of a child like Mashiro was incredibly difficult.
"But it seems thereās no place for me to sleep," Mashiro Shiina thought for a moment. If she gave her room to her cousin, where would she sleep? "Then Iāll share a room with Brother-in-law, and Iāll sleep on the floor," Mashiro Shiina said honestly. "This is Brother-in-lawās lesson on hospitality, the etiquette between host and guest."
Hold it! I didnāt teach you that! Renz silently screamed.
"No, itās better if you sleep in your own room," the warmth in Erinaās heart suddenly vanished. Mashiro Shiinaās thought process was still as unusual as ever. Erinaās gaze rested slowly on Renz. She naturally wouldnāt blame Renz, knowing this wasnāt Renzās fault, but rather Mashiroās consistently strange way of thinking.
But! A warning still needed to be given.
"To punish your erroneous teaching, youāll sleep on the floor tonight," Erina huffed.
"Yes, my dear wife," Renz said, bowing his head. A feint; heād agree first. Besides, Erinaās words sounded like a joke. Their relationship was as solid as iron; how could Renz not sense the teasing in her tone?
However, in all seriousness, sleeping on the floor when thereās a bed available is absolutely the act of a simpleton. Renz would definitely make a move to climb into bed, fast-forwarding to the blanket-stealing game.
