Chapter 48: Confrontation

The royal armory of the First Canopy was a towering vault carved directly into the petrified heartwood of the capital tree. Different from the initial armory at the Colosseum.

Vaulted ceilings stretched high into the upper branches, lit by the constant, pale white glow of floating crystal spheres. Rows of gleaming mithril chestplates, elegant curved longbows, and masterfully forged staves lined the walls, each item radiating a dense aura of high-tier elemental magic. It was a monument to centuries of elven military superiority.

But Vince didn’t look at any of it.

Escorted by four trembling paladins who kept their halberds pointed squarely at his back, Vince walked straight past the legendary relics. His long, heavy strides echoed through the silent vault.

Under the deep shadow of his messy hair, his purple eyes were fixed entirely on a plain, secure stone pedestal near the rear of the chamber.

Resting upon it was the weapon he had used to battle Orion during their duel—the massive, heavy steel double-edged sword. To the elegant elven blacksmiths, it was an oversized, unrefined piece of crude brute force.

To Vince, it was a blank canvas.

Before reaching out to claim it, Vince tilted his head down, summoning his system interface into his peripheral vision. With the Queen’s reluctant contract secured, it was time to finalize his optimization before Balthazar arrived.

System,

Vince conceptualized calmly in his mind, his hand hovering just inches above the heavy hilt of the sword.

Incorporate the remaining attribute parameters from my attribute pool directly into the molecular structure of this blade. Reforge it, adapt it to my current strength tier, and register it as an official soul-bound inventory asset.

The moment Vince’s fingers wrapped around the leather-bound hilt, a violent, high-frequency hum rippled through the steel. The silver blade rippled, its color darkening into a deep, matte gunmetal grey that entirely swallowed the pale light of the armory. The weapon grew significantly heavier, its dense mass multiplying until it would have crushed the wrists of any elite elven warrior who tried to lift it.

With a casual flick of his wrist, Vince lifted the colossal blade effortlessly, the sheer speed of the movement creating a sharp vacuum that caused the torches along the walls to flicker and die. In the blink of an eye, the massive sword vanished, dissolving into a faint streak of purple light as the system pulled it securely into his digital inventory.

The four guarding paladins practically jumped backward, their eyes widening in utter disbelief as the massive weapon simply ceased to exist in physical space.

"Where... where did it go?"

one of the guards stammered, his knuckles turning white against his halberd.

Vince didn’t bother answering. He turned on his heel, his purple eyes locking onto the exit of the armory.

"Sunset is almost here. Let’s not keep the guest of honor waiting."

Outside the vault, the golden, idyllic peace of the elven capital had completely dissolved into a state of apocalyptic terror.

The brilliant blue sky had turned a bruised, suffocating, violent purple as the sun dipped below the western canopy. High above, the defensive ancient wards were failing completely, their green luminescent lines shattering like fragile glass as a massive, oppressive shockwave rippled through the air every few seconds.

Elven civilians were screaming, scrambling into the safety of the upper tree hollows, while thousands of royal vanguard soldiers rushed toward the massive southern outer gates.

The grand courtyard leading to the city’s primary threshold was a sea of glittering silver armor, but the atmosphere among the troops was pure, unadulterated panic.

High up on the grand battlements overlooking the gates, the Elven Queen stood at the vanguard of her military council. Her exceptionally busty frame was tightly bound in golden chest armor that accentuated her sweeping, voluptuous hips, her emerald military silks whipping violently in the rising, unnatural wind. Her flawless, sun-kissed face was entirely pale as she stared out into the valley beyond her fractured walls.

A massive cloud of black, ash-choked dust was rolling up the mountain path like a tidal wave. And from the heart of that dust came the rhythmic, earth-shaking thud of heavy iron boots.

BOOM.

BOOM.

Every single step caused the massive stone courtyard to vibrate. The ambient mana in the air was being actively crushed, suffocated by a sheer, tyrannical physical presence that didn’t use magic—it simply obliterated it.

"Archers! Ready your elemental arrows!"

Elder Everwood shouted from the lower battlements, his voice cracking with an urgency he had never felt in his entire life.

"Mages, prepare the grand incinerating matrix!"

Before the commands could even be fully executed, the rolling black dust cloud violently parted.

Standing directly before the massive, fifty-foot-tall ironwood outer gates was a towering, monstrous silhouette. He was wrapped from head to toe in massive, jagged plates of obsidian-black iron armor that seemed to absorb the very concept of light. A tattered, blood-stained crimson cape trailed behind him, hissing against the dirt. Through the narrow slit of his massive, reinforced iron helm, two burning red eyes glowed with the absolute, unyielding madness of a religious zealot.

Dread Commander Balthazar had officially arrived.

"Where is Vince?"

Balthazar’s voice boomed, a deep, raspy roar that sounded like grinding tectonic plates. It didn’t just carry across the courtyard; the sheer acoustic force of his voice caused the glass windows of the nearby spires to instantly shatter into dust.

"Hand over the boy named Vince, or I will paint this forest in the blood of your children."

"Fire!"

Everwood screamed.

A volley of thousands of glowing, elementally charged arrows rain down from the sky like a meteor shower, accompanied by massive waves of localized magical fire that converged directly on the Commander’s position. The explosion was deafening, entirely engulfing the threshold in a massive pillar of blinding white flame.

The elven soldiers held their breath, waiting for the smoke to clear.

But Balthazar didn’t even slow down. He walked completely untouched through the raging magical inferno, his obsidian armor glowing faintly from the heat but entirely unscratched. His elemental resistance was absolute.

With a terrifying, low growl, Balthazar hoisted a colossal, jagged black iron executioner’s axe onto his shoulder. He took a single, explosive step forward, his boot cratering the stone road, and swung the massive weapon directly at the reinforced ironwood gates.

CRACK!

The massive, ancient gates—doors that had withstood sieges from entire dragon flights in the past—were blasted completely off their hinges. The fifty-foot wooden structures shattered into millions of flying, jagged splinters that rained down over the front lines of the royal vanguard, crushing dozens of elite soldiers instantly.

The elven defensive line completely collapsed into chaos. Soldiers threw down their weapons, fleeing in absolute psychological terror as the black-armored juggernaut stepped over the ruins of their gate, his burning red eyes scanning the courtyard.

"Incompetent worms,"

Balthazar hissed, raising his massive axe to begin the slaughter.

"Hey, muscle-brain."

A cool, completely deadpan voice cut through the panicking screams of the elven army, carrying an unbothered, casual weight that instantly locked onto Balthazar’s attention.

The panicking soldiers parted, scrambling away as a lone human figure walked calmly out onto the fractured stone courtyard. Vince stood entirely alone, his dark hair swaying gently in the wind, his hands casually tucked into his pockets. He didn’t wear armor. He didn’t have a weapon visible. He simply looked up at the towering, terrifying commander with a relaxed, mocking smile.

"You’re making a lot of noise for someone who’s late,"

Vince said smoothly, his purple eyes flashing with a cold, predatory light in the fading twilight.

"I thought you’d have caught me sooner, guess that was just me overestimating you seeing as you’re all muscle and zero brain after all."

High up on the battlements, the Queen’s hand gripped the stone railing so tightly that the marble began to crack. Her breath caught in her throat, her amber eyes fixed entirely on the lone, magicless human who had just stepped between her kingdom and absolute annihilation.

Balthazar froze, his burning red eyes locking onto Vince. A terrifying, guttural laugh erupted from beneath his iron helm.

"Still arrogant I see,"

Balthazar roared, his massive aura exploding outward, crushing the surrounding stones into gravel.

"Prepare to die, boy!"

Vince’s smile turned into a cold, lethal grin. He slowly pulled his right hand from his pocket, a faint streak of purple light rippling through the air as the massive, gunmetal-grey

Executioner’s Edge

materialized flawlessly into his grip.

"Let’s see who dies first,"

Vince whispered.
