Mara on the floor because the inn’s chairs weren’t designed for two meters ten and Mara had assessed her options and chosen the floor without drama.

The first time in months that the five of them were in the same space without a pending quest, an active fight, or a territory retaining A-rank hunters.
Just the room. The fire. Aldric’s coffee.
Kai looked at the stream.

Mara looked at Kai from the floor.

Mara’s ears rose two centimeters.
Serah stared at the fire.
Lira finally picked up the coffee.

Not the standard ones — Chapter one hundred activated something in the viewers. Things Kai had never seen materialize arrived.
A bag of the chips Serah had discovered in Chapter 60 — Serah took them before Kai could say anything.
A bottle of hot sauce. Aldric examined it. Smelled it. Returned it.
A sign that read #TeamSerah with an arrow pointing toward where Serah was. Serah looked at it. Her markings pulsed. She accepted it.
A sign that read #TeamLira. Lira picked it up. Examined it. Placed it on the table in front of her.
A sign that read #TeamMara. Mara looked at it.
"What do I do with this."
"Whatever you want," Kai said.
Mara looked at him. Looked at the sign.

Serah arrived without being called — as always.
She sat beside him.
"A hundred?" Serah said.
"A hundred."
"How many more."
Kai looked at her.
"How many do you want."
Her markings pulsed.
"However many there are."
Kai looked at her for a moment.
"However many there are," he repeated.
The markings in the pulse that didn’t need to go anywhere.

Kai passed by in the hallway.
He stopped at the open door.
"The glasses inside Vayne’s office."
Lira didn’t look up from the report.
"And?"
"What did she tell you."
"I already said. Nothing relevant right now."
"And when is it relevant."
Lira lowered the report.
She looked at him.
"When I decide it is."
Kai looked at her a moment.
"Alright."
He continued down the hallway.
Lira went back to the report.
Her fingers didn’t go to her fangs this time.
But the pen stopped on the paper for several seconds before continuing to write.

At dusk Mara was at the guild door watching Valdris’s main street.
Not with the tactical assessment she used for territories — with the curiosity of someone who has spent two years in a camp of three hundred people and is seeing a village of a thousand for the first time without the objective of completing a quest.
Kai came to her side.
"How’s Valdris going."
"It’s small for being big."
"What does that mean."
"That it has more structure than it needs for its size." Mara didn’t take her eyes off the street. "The camp had three hundred people and no permanent structures. Valdris has less than a thousand and has a government building, a guild, an inn, a market." A pause. "Why."
"Because the people here don’t move." Kai. "The camp could move. Valdris can’t."
Mara processed this.
"Do you move."
"Always."
"And if one day you can’t."
Kai looked at her.
"Then I learn to stay."
Mara looked at him.
Her ears moved on their own.
She didn’t lower them this time.

At night the three were in the common room.

Kai came in with some food from the inn’s kitchen.
He placed it on the table.
He sat down.
All three looked at him.
Kai looked at the food.
Looked at the three.
"What."
The three looked at each other.
Serah’s markings in their steady pulse. Lira’s glasses on the table. Mara’s ears in neutral position.
"Nothing," Serah said.
"Nothing," Lira said.
"Nothing," Mara said.
Kai looked at the food again.
He divided it among the four of them without asking about portions.
They ate.
