Chapter 122: The Summons
Aldric set the document on the table before they sat down.
Not with urgency — with the gesture of someone who’s been carrying something all day and would rather get it off his chest as soon as possible.
"It arrived this morning. Directly from the kingdom."
Kai picked it up.
Read it.
Mara was in the corner chair with the coffee Aldric had served her just as he did with everyone. She had smelled it.
She hadn’t tasted it yet. She was staring at it with the concentration she gave to things she didn’t recognize.
"Five A-rank hunters?" Kai said.
"Missing. Northern border territory." Aldric took his coffee. "The kingdom says they’re not dead. The energy signatures they left before losing contact don’t correspond to death. They correspond to... a type of retention."
"Type of retention?"
"Their word. Not mine."
Lira took the document when Kai set it down.
"What energy signature?"
"The kingdom’s classification system can’t name it." Aldric. "Which is the part I find most interesting."

"I know," Serah said.
Lira looked at her.
Serah didn’t finish the sentence.
Kai looked at both of them.
"Borders what?"
Neither answered right away.
Mara, from the corner, without taking her eyes off the coffee:
"Wolf territory."

Vayne received them in the Valdris government building an hour later.
The scar on her jaw. The short hair. The posture of someone who has held authority long enough for the posture to be automatic and not performative.
She watched them enter one by one — Kai, Serah, Mara.
She stopped on Lira.
Lira stopped too.
The last time they had been in the same space, Lira had arrived transforming from bats through the streets of Valdris and Vayne had tried to stop her.
That was before Grimvast. Before the administrator. Before Mount Heiguers and the civil war and everything that came after.
"Duchess," Vayne said.
"Ruler," Lira said.
Neither smiled.
Neither attacked.

Vayne put the map on the table.
The northern border territory marked in red. The five points where the hunters had lost contact.
"Five A-rank hunters," she said. "The best in the kingdom for difficult terrain operations. Ten days without responding." She looked at Kai. "The kingdom has sent two rescue teams. Both teams also lost contact."
"How many total?"
"Seventeen people."
Silence in the room.
"And what do you expect us to do that three teams of hunters couldn’t?" Lira said.
"I don’t know." Vayne said it without the defensive tone she would have had months ago. With the honesty of someone who has exhausted the known options. "But the energy signatures they left before disappearing correspond to something that no kingdom classification system can name. And the four of you have been doing things for months that no system can classify."
Mara, who had been assessing the map in silence, said:
"What shape does the signature have?"
Vayne looked at her.
"Pardon?"
"The energy signature. What shape does it have? Is it static or does it move? Does it cover an area or concentrate at points?"
Vayne searched her documents.
"The records say it covers an area. It doesn’t move. It’s been there since before the first hunters arrived."
Mara nodded.
She said nothing more.
Kai looked at her.
Mara was staring at the map.

"Why should I trust you with this?"
Kai looked at her.
"You have no reason to trust me with anything."
Vayne waited.
"But if you want your seventeen people back, this is the only option you have left."
Vayne processed this for a moment.
"And if you don’t come back."
"Then I’ll bring back whatever I find." Kai looked at the map. "Which is more than what you have now."

Vayne signed the authorization.
As the group was leaving, Mara stopped in front of her.
The two of them in the same space — Vayne with the scar and institutional authority, Mara with her two meters ten and three hundred forty years and the assessment she’d been making since they entered.
"The area signature that doesn’t move," Mara said. "On Mount Heiguers there are two zones like that. Both have an entity at the center producing them without knowing it."
Vayne looked at her.
"Without knowing it?"
"Something powerful enough generates a field without deciding to. Like breathing." Mara. "Your seventeen hunters didn’t find anyone because they were looking for someone who captured them. They probably don’t even know they’re there."
Vayne processed this.
"And how do you free someone from that field?"
Mara looked at her.
"Ask him that." She nodded toward Kai. "It’s what he does."
She left.
