Chapter 38: Disguise & Couple
The sound of keys dangling and a lock being unlocked echoed, soon followed by creaking as the door swung open.
The three cultists continued whipping their victims and, as though herding sheep, drove them into the room.
Soon, the dozen people disappeared into the chamber.
Only half a minute later, the trio of cultists walked back out. Meanwhile, the women were nowhere to be seen, seemingly having been swallowed by an invisible beast.
The door was shut before being locked once again, ensuring no one would escape from inside.
Throughout the entire process, the cultists did not know that two cold gazes had always been locked onto them, only leaving when they closed the door behind.
This was not because Aurelius and Selene had given up on these cultists.
Instead, it was because the two were surprisingly still within the room.
"Why did you hold me back? What’s the point of staying here?" Aurelius’ whispered voice soon rang out.
"Didn’t you say you still have a Disguise Potion on you? Compared to using it to go undercover as cultists, it would be better to pretend to be a captive instead."
As Selene spoke, her gaze slowly swept through the room.
It was a dungeon, composed of dozens of smaller cells, with each housing several people.
Women. Men. Young. Old.
All kinds of people could be found, while the marks on their bodies betrayed that they had all suffered similar torture.
These people only shared a single common characteristic. They all happened to be mortals, possessing no extraordinary power whatsoever.
As she looked at this scene, Selene’s fists clenched subconsciously.
Her reaction caused Aurelius to suspect that the reason she urged him to stay here was not purely rational, but also had an emotional aspect.
However, he wasn’t entirely opposed to it.
This... could actually work.
Without giving Selene any more time to speak, Aurelius slipped into one of the many cells and appeared behind a pair of tortured captives.
Using the invisibility and his outstanding Base Stats, he easily knocked them unconscious.
Then, he hid their bodies using what little items he found inside the cell, and gestured to Selene to come in.
Selene glanced at the unconscious couple and seemed to want to say something. But in the end, she swallowed the words that had just emerged in her mouth and entered the prison.
"You’re right," Aurelius said as soon as she approached him.
"Compared to replacing any of the cultists, it might be more effective to disguise ourselves as captives."
"After all, the cultists might have some prejudice against each other. Even if they don’t, their familiarity with each other makes it difficult to easily replace them."
"These people, on the other hand..."
Although they were enemies per se, the members of the Sunless Sect were clearly not on guard against them.
In their view, how could a bunch of mortals possibly cause them any harm?
In the home of their Lord, nonetheless, it was impossible!
With that thought, Aurelius forcefully removed the effects of the Invisibility Potion. With a move, he grabbed one of the few vials remaining on his waist and consumed it.
As the image of the man in the cell surfaced in his mind, his body also started to transform.
His few shown facial features were altered, growing to resemble the man. As the mask gradually faded away, the now ordinary face hidden beneath it appeared.
His height and clothes were also adjusted accordingly.
Within just a moment, the originally masked Aurelius had vanished and in his place stood an ordinary captive.
Even the fearful look on his face remained.
Selene was caught off guard by the rapid change. Although she was familiar with the Disguise Potion, it was still shocking to see a person transform into another right in front of you.
However, as the "captive" handed her a Potion and motioned for her to drink it, she snapped back to reality.
Before long, her figure had also disappeared, replaced by an unfamiliar woman.
"The effects of the Disguise Potion will break once we engage in combat. If we don’t, they can last for approximately half a day," Aurelius leaned a little closer and whispered.
"Are you sure that the cultists will summon us? You know, we have practically imprisoned ourselves. If things don’t go according to the plan..." Selene did not finish her words, but her meaning was clear.
Even if they could break out of the room, doing so would surely alert the cultists. At that point, their chances of escaping were extremely low.
Hearing her question, Aurelius was stunned.
Wasn’t she the one who proposed this idea?
How come she had changed her tune in a matter of seconds and was now pinning it on him?
Fortunately, he was wise enough not to voice his complaints.
After exchanging a few more words, he sat on the ground just like the captive had done before, gazing blankly at the space in front of him with an empty gaze.
Selene did the same.
For a moment, they truly looked like a pair of desperate captives who had been tortured to the point of numbness.
Under their strange cooperation, time slowly passed.
Silence shrouded the dungeon.
Although all the captives were seriously injured, none of them dared to wail or let out any other sound.
They all forced themselves to remain silent, as though afraid of the punishment they would suffer if they did not do so.
Like that, time slowly passed.
Seconds turned into minutes.
Just as Aurelius took another look at the countdown, the sound of footsteps and laughter suddenly echoed from outside.
The next instant, the familiar sound of dangling keys rang out and the door swung open.
Three cultists stepped inside. Their gazes swept across the dungeon coldly, briefly landing on each of the cells.
"The Priest ordered that we bring four people. It’s best if they are two men and two women," one of the cultists told his companions.
"Take a man and a woman from these two cells," the man standing next to him pointed at one cell on the left and one on the right.
Then after a brief pause, he continued.
"As for the other two... just grab those two. If I remember correctly, they should have been a couple. Hehe," he chuckled.
"Let’s grant them the blessing of staying together until their very end."
"Haha. How poetic would that be?"
Sinister chuckles echoed through the dungeon as the three men burst out in laughter when they saw the terrified expression on the four people’s faces.
