Chapter 2819: Chapter 940: I Decide to Call It “The Year of Turmoil” and “The Advent of the Saint”
This made a sharp pang of pain surge up in Mia’s heart. She bent down and, with her gloved hand, picked up a delicate diary that had been more than half burnt in the black ruins.
It was her younger sister’s diary, the birthday gift Mia had saved up to buy for her last year.
The complicated experiences of this period finally made it impossible for Mia to stay calm at this moment. She wanted to cry. This did not mean she wasn’t strong enough; it was just that fate’s repeated malice had become a bit too much to bear. Yet vampires could not shed tears. The world had never treated them kindly; even the right to express sorrow had been stripped away.
The meritorious lieutenant held the diary tight against her chest. Her shoulders trembled as if she were losing the whole world all over again, as if she were alone once more in a desolate night. The pain in her heart was like a snail, moving slowly yet with endless patience, while happiness was like a rabbit’s tail brushing across the autumn fields...
"Who’s there! Come out!"
Even in such grief, the senses granted by her vampire blood, combined with her innate hunter’s instinct, still let Mia immediately catch the disturbance at the mouth of the alley behind her.
She barked the order as she spun around, and a replica Colt 1911 with the safety off had already appeared in her hand. It was an elite weapon crafted by the technical Big Bulls of the arsenal for issue to officers, its firepower and destructive power far more deadly than the revolver she’d used before.
Her finger rested on the trigger, ready to attack at any moment.
This was the instinct of the People’s Army’s finest warrior.
But in the very next second, the cold-faced Mia saw two half-grown children in ragged clothes huddling together, staring at her in terror, a bag full of meat buns dropped on the ground beside them.
That was the first ration General Kuder had ordered distributed to the city’s residents. These must be a brother and sister who had just collected their supplies and were on their way home. Their faces were thin and gaunt, the look of long-term malnutrition. The girl’s hair was dry and yellowing, while the boy had a strange tattoo around his neck that shimmered with starlight.
That was not the point.
The point was that Mia recognized the two children at a glance, and as her hand, trembling, lowered the pistol, the two children also recognized her.
"Big Sis!"
The half-grown girl let out an excited shriek and immediately tried to throw herself into Mia’s arms, but her little brother behind her grabbed her with all his strength.
"Vampire! Big Sis turned into a vampire! Don’t go near her!"
Mia’s little brother was just as agitated, but he still clung to the last of his reason. His shout made Mia, who had been rushing toward her siblings, stop in her tracks; her emotions crashed like a roller coaster into a wall of cold rock.
Right. She had become a vampire.
For the residents of Cardman City, no one dared openly oppose the Midnight loved ones, but in truth their real thoughts about vampires always showed in how they educated their children.
Her brother’s reaction made Mia feel as if a stone were lodged in her chest, cooling the joy of reunion that had just flared up.
"What nonsense are you talking! Let go! You’ve already turned into a Star Realm Monster, and we didn’t give up on you, did we?"
But Mia’s little sister was clearly fierce. She punched her foolish brother in the eye, making him howl, and she herself felt no fear at all, sprinting like a cannonball straight into Mia’s arms.
The vampire lieutenant hugged her family back as tightly as she could, as if in this moment she were embracing the world anew.
"Wuu... we missed you so much, Mia... When the city got pulled into the Star Realm we couldn’t find you anywhere... Where did you go!"
Mia’s sister cried as she demanded an answer from her, her voice tearing with grief.
Mia couldn’t answer, and she didn’t want to. When the city’s disaster struck, she had been down in the sewers’ black market with Norse and Papillon, working for Sister Doris’s Rat Gang. For children from the Lower City District, that was a pretty decent job.
Unfortunately, Sister Doris was extremely picky; she only took the sharpest, most capable kids as her temporary underlings.
Because of that, Mia had, by sheer coincidence, escaped unscathed when the city above was swept into the Star Realm.
"Are Mom and Dad... still alive?"
Mia soothed her sister, her voice trembling slightly as she asked. At this point, her little brother, still covering his eye, stepped forward and quietly said to their big sister:
"Mom and Dad are both here!
When something terrible happened in the city, Dad took us to hide at Aunt Madeline’s. Aunt Madeline is a Blood Servant. She protected us and gave us food, but a few days ago her master kicked her out of the Inner City, and now she’s living with us."
"They’re all here... as long as they’re all here."
Mia let out a breath of relief, then she asked:
"What about the neighbors..."
"The neighbors all..."
Mia’s sister looked sadly and fearfully at the street before them, now nothing but ruins, and said:
"Very few people got out. Lots of them disappeared into those maze-like alleys. Dad says we’re already very lucky. He said we all have to thank someone called Murphy... Big Sis, who is that?
Do you know him?"
"You should address him as ’Sir Morphy’."
Mia held her brother and sister close, and answered softly but solemnly:
"He is a great and kind man. He’s the Governor of Transylvania, our liege lord and our savior."
"Wow, will Sir Morphy be King someday?"
Her younger brother, still very much a child, asked in curiosity, leaving Mia unsure how to reply. She helped them pick up the meat buns that had fallen, and led them toward their current home. On the way, she thought for a moment and said:
