Chapter 498: Chapter 319: I’m the Annoying Pest’s Wife
On the cold, slate coffee table sat an open can of ice-cold cola.
A blue towel was draped over Chen Yuan’s body.
He had just gotten out of the shower, and his hair was still dripping wet. He had only towel-dried it enough to get the water droplets out, leaving his bangs clinging together in strands on his forehead. At first glance, he had the distinct look of a gloomy male protagonist from a Neon Country drama. But one look at Chen Yuan’s face and that gloomy impression faded. Your typical brooding male lead from Neon Country wasn’t this handsome.
Back home in Qishui County, Liu He had nagged Chen Yuan countless times to blow-dry his hair after washing it. Letting it air-dry was bad for him, she’d say; he could easily catch a cold. If he kept this bad habit up for a decade or so, he might end up with chronic headaches and fevers, which would be terrible.
But no one was here to boss him around. This was Lanjing, not that rundown little county town. Otherwise, Chen Yuan wouldn’t be nursing an ice-cold cola in the middle of the night—an offense that, in his mother’s eyes, was a sin worthy of a hard slap across the face.
After taking Jiangg Ning home, Chen Yuan had returned to his own place across the hall. He showered and had been sitting here ever since, so lost in thought that he didn’t notice time passing. Condensation from the cola can dripped onto the coffee table, forming a ring of water.
He had only taken a single sip after opening it.
Chen Yuan rubbed his hands together ceaselessly, his gaze fixed on the soda can.
By the river, he had truly been pushed to his limit. In a moment of recklessness, he had thrown caution to the wind. Let others say what they would; he would die before he gave up on being with the two girls he loved so deeply. But now that he had calmed down, he realized just how much harder than scaling the heavens this would be.
He had been shamelessly indulging in wishful thinking. But were they even willing? The sisters hadn’t given him their answer. What was the point of him getting all fired up? At that thought, the blood in his veins ran cold.
The first and greatest hurdle was Jiangg Ning.
’The memory of her words when the truth about the twins came out is still so vivid. If Jiangg Ning fell in love with the pure, shy boy who blushed at the smallest lie, wouldn’t this change disappoint her to her core? Everyone has their own unshakeable principles. Whether I can live with myself is one thing, but losing my shine in Jiangg Ning’s eyes and becoming just another ordinary person is something else entirely.’
The more he thought about it, the more Chen Yuan felt trapped in a dilemma, wanting to tear his hair out in frustration.
’I can’t just get both sisters pregnant and have them give birth... can I?’
He needed a solution, but he couldn’t come up with one no matter how hard he wracked his brain. A person’s worldview, values, and perspective on love are all formed over many years. They rely on these things to navigate all the challenges of life, to move forward as independent, thinking beings.
When faced with a situation, these views subconsciously guide a person’s judgment, helping them discern others’ intentions or reminding them where their own boundaries lie.
Changing Jiangg Ning would mean fundamentally crossing her boundaries.
Chen Yuan didn’t know what Jiangg Yao was thinking yet. He could only hope for the best. As long as Yaoyao’s attitude was a little more flexible, there was still a slim chance. Changing one person was far less difficult than changing two.
Just as he was thinking this,
CLICK. The door to the suite opened. Chen Yuan turned his head and saw Jiangg Yao.
"Anyone home~?"
Jiangg Yao peeked her head in, winking as she waved at Chen Yuan. Her long hair was tied up in a bun, revealing her smooth, elegant neck.
She ducked her head, taking small, quick steps inside, her white slippers making a TAP-TAP sound on the floor.
"It’s freezing! It gets so cold at night. I had to psych myself up for a long time just to make the two-step journey from my place to yours."
Jiangg Yao said this as she walked over, her shoulders shivering from the cold. When she reached the sofa, she kicked off her slippers and climbed right onto it, striding over to Chen Yuan’s side with her long legs.
She was wearing a new outfit he didn’t recognize—a black-and-white baseball jacket. Below it were her fair thighs and a pair of thick, over-the-knee socks, the layers clearly defined.
Chen Yuan clearly felt the soft sofa beside him dip as her feet stepped onto it, followed by the intoxicating scent that was uniquely hers.
Jiangg Yao sat down cross-legged.
He pulled the sofa blanket over and draped it across Jiangg Yao’s slightly chilled legs.
"Wearing something so thin in the middle of the night, of course you’re going to be cold." A warm smile appeared on Chen Yuan’s face. Yaoyao’s arrival had washed away much of his bad mood.
"I wore it for you to see." Jiangg Yao stood up from the sofa and did a shy, hesitant spin. The desire for praise on her face was impossible to hide.
’She’s so straightforward, wearing all her feelings on her face. It’s nice,’ Chen Yuan thought.
"It’s beautiful. I can’t take my eyes off you." He reached out a hand.
"No touching."
Jiangg Yao’s face flushed, and she suddenly became bashful, grabbing the blanket again to cover her long legs.
A girl’s legs are the most wonderful thing in the world. One could say that appreciating beautiful legs is the ultimate meaning of life. This wasn’t lechery; it was purely a person’s innate yearning for beautiful things, the most primal of instincts. And that’s not even getting to the strip of skin exposed between her over-the-knee socks and the hem of her jacket, the contrast of dark fabric against fair skin.
The ultimate "absolute territory."
"Why can’t I touch?" Chen Yuan asked deliberately.
"Because they’re my legs. You can only touch them when I want you to. If I don’t want you to, you can’t~" Jiangg Yao pouted, looking impossibly smug.
"Then how do I make you want me to?"
"Hmm... how about you make me happy?"
"Is that the kind of happy I think it is...?"
"Come on, call me ’Big Sister’ and let me hear it."
To be fair, Jiangg Yao wasn’t trying to give him a hard time. She knew Chen Yuan’s personality and just found it amusing to make the shy boy blush and beg.
It was his own fault for always acting so prim and proper before.
She lowered her head, her eyes narrowing as she stared at Chen Yuan, who was half-lying on the sofa. Her expression made it clear: no calling her ’sister,’ no intimacy.
"Hello, Big Sister. Let me touch your legs."
"Hahahaha."
"What are you laughing at?"
"N-No way," Jiangg Yao said, covering her face as she shook with laughter. "You don’t pass."
"Yaoyao, can I give your legs a little massage?"
"That’s more like it. I’m a little bit happy now."
"Only a little bit?"
"Try another name. How about you call me ’Mommy Yaoyao’?"
"?"
Chen Yuan’s vision instantly went dark. His face hardened. "Not a chance."
"Oh, come on, just once. It’s not like you’ll lose a piece of flesh."
"Stop barking. I don’t understand dog."
"Boring!"
Jiangg Yao put her hands on her hips, annoyed. "You’re no fun at all," she huffed.
"Yep, I’m no fun. You’re the most fun."
"Pfft, why are you talking just like my sister, all passive-aggressive?" Jiangg Yao rolled her eyes. Her gaze fell on the cola on the coffee table. "Young Master, did you just open this?"
"Opened it half an hour ago."
"Why are you drinking ice-cold cola in the middle of the night? It’s so bad for your stomach."
As she said this, she picked up the cola and took a delicate sip.
"Forgot to tell you. I actually spit in that a second ago."
"Huh?" Jiangg Yao feigned shock. "No wonder it tastes so good. It’s holy water."
"Ew~ Jiangg Yao, you’re getting more and more perverted."
"Well, you were trying to gross me out. ’Spit in it’? As if I’d believe that. You meanie."
"If I’m a meanie, then what are you?"
"I’m the meanie’s wife. Your wifey~"
Jiangg Yao put on a docile expression, curling up and settling into his embrace. She tilted her head back, her eyes twinkling with endless light.
