Chapter 493: Chapter 315: Going to the Riverside Together

Chen Yuan immediately put Jiangg Ning down. His cheeks were bright red as he scratched his head in embarrassment, not daring to meet Jiangg Yao’s angry gaze. He walked out, feigning nonchalance.

"Yaoyao, how come you walk so quietly? You scared me."

"What do you mean, ’quietly’? I’m asking what you two were doing! This is a kitchen! Are you two using it as your marital bed?"

Jiangg Yao wanted nothing more than to grab him by the ear and demand an explanation.

A moment ago, she had been deeply moved, basking in the sweetness of being doted on by her husband. But in the blink of an eye, her husband had turned into her brother-in-law???

When she saw their beaming faces from outside the kitchen, how could she not feel a pang of jealousy?

Jiangg Yao was willing to be understanding and let Chen Yuan maintain their three-person relationship, but he couldn’t just throw all his principles out the window!

"We weren’t doing anything." Chen Yuan felt a bit guilty under Jiangg Yao’s fierce attitude.

Jiangg Ning straightened the slightly messy hem of her apron. She wasn’t particularly nervous. On the contrary, she glanced at Yaoyao and said lightly, "Didn’t you see what we were doing? It was just a hug. Don’t be in such a rush."

"Am I in a rush?" Jiangg Yao’s eyes widened. She looked at her sister, then turned her gaze to Chen Yuan and asked, word by word, "Am. I. In. A. Rush?"

"Not at all," Chen Yuan said, blinking.

The next second, however, Jiangg Yao grabbed his arm and yanked him over, practically hanging off him.

She was holding on so tightly that it actually hurt a little. Chen Yuan instinctively tried to move his arm, but Jiangg Yao just squeezed harder, as if she wanted to merge him into her own body.

Jiangg Ning watched her with amusement. She crossed her arms, casually brushed a stray strand of hair from her temple, and said with a sarcastic curl of her lips, "You’re really something."

"Hmph!"

After flaunting her victory in front of her sister, Jiangg Yao pulled Chen Yuan toward the sofa. She lowered her voice and said with dissatisfaction, "Why were you trying to pull away?"

"My arm hurt, what was I supposed to do...?"

Her anger flared at his answer, and she stomped on his foot.

Chen Yuan immediately retaliated with a slap on her butt. He didn’t hold back, and the force of the blow made Jiangg Yao stop in her tracks from the sting.

"You play too rough! I’m gonna pinch you."

"Hiss—"

The two started roughhousing in the living room, chasing each other around. Outside, the city lights began to glow, and accompanied by the sound of car horns, the night sky grew deeper.

"You think I didn’t see anything?"

"I wasn’t doing anything, just checking Ningning’s weight. Do you have to be so worked up?"

"Who are you trying to fool?"

Only the warm light of the living room shone down on their boisterous squabbling.

...

「A few minutes later.」

"Stop playing around. Time for dinner."

Jiangg Ning knocked on the table, calling out to Jiangg Yao and Chen Yuan on the sofa. She was speechless.

The two of them had just finished their noisy fight not ten minutes ago, and now they were all cuddly and playing happily together again. Their silvery laughter was incessant, unsettling her even as she was stewing the soup.

"Okay, I got it, Ningning," Chen Yuan replied, then turned to Jiangg Yao. "You lost. Hand over."

"I only lost on purpose because we have to eat. It doesn’t count."

"Trying to get out of it, are you? Are you?"

Chen Yuan, of course, showed Yaoyao no mercy. He hooked an arm around her neck and stood up, forcing her to bend at the waist with her butt sticking out, unable to even lift her head. She could only claw at his arm, trying to break free.

Then Chen Yuan pinched her cheeks hard.

"Hey! I told you—no chokeholds!"

"That’s what you get for backing out."

"I..." Jiangg Yao’s face was flushed red, and her hair was all messed up. At a glance, it looked as if Chen Yuan had done something unspeakable to her.

They were actually playing a very simple mini-game called "Jump Jump." Whoever made a mistake and had to start over had to accept a hand-slap as punishment. Chen Yuan, like most guys, had a strong competitive streak that came out in any game.

He made almost no mistakes the entire time. Jiangg Yao, on the other hand, just kept getting her hand slapped.

Seeing that Chen Yuan had no intention of letting her off even though it was time to eat, Jiangg Yao pleaded pitifully, "Sis, look at him!"

"Chen, stop messing around. Come and eat properly."

"Alright."

With Jiangg Ning having spoken, Chen Yuan, no matter how much of a typical guy he was, had to give in. He let go of the arm around Yaoyao’s neck, pulled over a chair, and plopped down.

He looked at the dishes on the table, which were perfect in color, aroma, and taste, and took a deep, satisfied sniff.

Jiangg Ning handed him his chopsticks, then picked up a ladle and served him a small bowl of bamboo shoot and ham soup.

The simple, warm dinner began with the clinking of bowls and plates. This tranquility made one reluctant to think about tomorrow, or the day after, regardless of whether the future held peace or not.

Chen Yuan just wanted to cherish this moment.

That was all.

...

After dinner, the time approached 8:30 PM.

Chen Yuan helped Jiangg Ning load all the dishes into the dishwasher. When he turned around, Jiangg Yao was already sprawled on the sofa. She was rubbing her full belly, staring at something on her phone. The faint light from the screen illuminated her delicate features, and a fond, knowing smile played on her lips.

Normally, Jiangg Yao was the dynamic one, and Jiangg Ning was the static one. But whenever they were full after a meal, Jiangg Yao would become static, and Ningning would become dynamic.

Chen Yuan knew a little about medicine, enough to clearly diagnose Jiangg Yao’s condition: lazy pig syndrome.

So he took the initiative. "Stop lying there like a pig. Come out for a walk with me to digest a little."

"What?" Jiangg Yao moved her phone away. After hearing what Chen Yuan said, she rolled over in a huff. "No way. I’m dead tired. What’s gotten into you, suddenly wanting to go for a walk?"

"It’s not ’what’s gotten into me.’ Lying down right after eating is comfortable, sure, but it’s hard on your digestion."

"Ugh, I don’t want to move. Besides, I have to call my girls from my group chat later. We already made plans."

Jiangg Yao yawned as she spoke.

Her sedentary lifestyle had become a habit. Jiangg Ning had told her many times to no avail. Since she was still in her twenties, any weight gain wasn’t noticeable. Yaoyao was even smug that her weight hadn’t changed much in over a year, so she felt perfectly justified in her laziness.

Chen Yuan knew she wouldn’t agree and put on a helpless expression.

"Fine, if you won’t go, I’ll just go for a walk with Ningning."

"Go, go! Perfect. Now I don’t have to go back to my room to call my friends. I can say whatever I want."

"Bye."

Chen Yuan turned and went to the entryway, pushing open the door to the walk-in closet to find Jiangg Ning.

As he went in, Ningning had just finished changing and was pulling down the hem of her sweatshirt to cover her flat stomach. Hearing the door open, she turned to look.

Chen Yuan reached out to hug her.

Jiangg Ning had changed into a set of looser-fitting clothes: a white sweatshirt, gray sweatpants, and a pair of sneakers. She had even tied her long hair up in a high ponytail, a rare sight, which instantly gave her an athletic vibe and highlighted the distinct aura of a wealthy beauty.

"Yaoyao’s not coming?"

"Nope."

"As expected. Well, let’s get going."

...

The two had originally planned to just take a walk in the nearby park downstairs, but after chatting and laughing all the way there, they found that the spring insects were already out in force, swarming in clusters under the streetlights.

The running track next to the long-neglected man-made lake was uneven, a tripping hazard, and was filled with the fishy smell of algae wafting up from the water.

The park was cluttered with too many unnecessary things and wasn’t spacious enough, making the walk feel rather stifling.

Most importantly, it was crowded with older folks walking their dogs and taking strolls, and Chen Yuan couldn’t find a single secluded spot. If it weren’t for the pleasantly cool night breeze, he would have given up and left long ago.

「Half an hour later.」

「Downstairs at Fengting District.」

"Chen, why did you stop walking?" Jiangg Ning asked, curious, when she saw Chen Yuan pause.

Chen Yuan hesitated, looking at her.

It wasn’t that he absolutely had to give her the gift today. They would have countless moments together in the future; he could pick any suitable time.

But the exquisitely wrapped jewelry box in his pocket felt like a red-hot piece of charcoal, making him antsy.

He really wanted to see the surprise on Jiangg Ning’s face when she received the gift, which was why he had suggested going for a walk in the first place.

’Should I give it to her here?’ he thought. ’It still doesn’t feel perfect.’

A cool breeze rustled through the dozens of lush ornamental trees downstairs, their leaves whispering in the darkness. He lifted his foot, then set it down again.

Suddenly, a flash of inspiration struck him.

"Are you tired?" he asked tentatively.

"No, how could I be tired after only walking for half an hour?" Jiangg Ning answered, taken aback for a moment.

"How about we go check out the riverfront? The same one where I bought you those roasted chestnuts. The breeze tonight is so nice; a walk over there would be perfect."

"Sure. It’s rare for you to be in the mood for something like this."

With that, the two headed for the underground garage. Jiangg Ning seemed quite pleased with the suggestion, her steps becoming much lighter.

That long road by the river was where they had first confirmed their relationship.

The road was quiet and long, with few pedestrians. It was the perfect place to give her a gift.
