Chapter 762: Chapter 672: Remnants of the Old Era (3)
With the correct answer, Chichu Hong directly twisted the lieutenant’s neck. Soldiers outside heard the commotion and rushed in, aiming their guns at everyone inside the room.
"Do you know who you’re aiming your guns at?" Lei Wu’s forehead veins throbbed violently.
With just one sentence, the frontal pressure from the Prism Tier Cleaner swept through the room. All the soldiers instantly felt their hearts gripped by a pair of hands, and the fear suffocated them, causing their guns to fall to the ground.
Lei Wu was too lazy to argue with these soldiers, more agitated by the situation laid bare in front of her.
"Dr. Yang, you really hid something big from us. This matter is related to the Eight-Spider Nest Mother’s right limb. Did you say you were collecting samples before boarding?"
"The sample from the Eight-Spider Nest Mother is still a sample," Dr. Yang said calmly. "You all heard the earlier discussion. The right limb’s activity is very stable now."
"How could it not be stable?" Lei Wu sneered, "If it weren’t stable, we would’ve descended underground by now. That’s the Eight-Spider Nest Mother; it’s a god!"
"Only a madman would commit blasphemy!"
"Damn it, such a hefty reward, we should’ve known nothing good was coming."
"So?"
Dr. Yang picked up the briefcase, stepped over the lieutenant’s corpse under the watchful eyes, and fished a key card out of his jacket pocket.
"The company is responsible for assigning the mission, you accept it, and then complete it to receive the reward."
"Such a simple road, those who have climbed to the current height shouldn’t be oblivious."
"At this point, do you still intend to question a link in the execution chain like me?"
"What exactly does Life Daylight want to do?"
Chichu Hong grabbed Dr. Yang’s collar and slammed him into the wall.
The girl’s words seemed calm, yet they contained hidden rage. In her fury, her skin began to exhibit scales, her pupils nearly turning into golden vertical slits. As the scales on Chichu Hong’s arm clicked together loudly, her muscles bulged, her lines becoming more defined. In just an instant, the girl’s form had transformed into some sort of reptile.
"Just collecting samples from the Eight-Spider Nest Mother, that’s all."
"Bastard, why didn’t you inform my family immediately when you knew the whereabouts of the right limb?"
"The calamity of the Eight-Spider Nest Mother’s resurrection, thousands will be buried because of it..."
Chichu Hong’s claw tightened further, sinking into Dr. Yang’s neck, his entire face turning red.
"Still not planning to act?"
He looked painfully towards those present.
In just a moment.
The battle ended in less than a minute. Panyan held the barely breathing Chichu Hong, who had shed her scales, her face covered in dust and dim, allowing Panyan to pick her up.
Panyan’s right fist clenched slightly. Chichu Hong’s skull shattered, and she died on the spot.
Panyan tossed Chichu Hong to the ground, and the blood she shed corroded the room’s floor, sizzling.
Ghost sighed lightly and sheathed his blade. Beside him, Lei Wu stepped on Chichu Hong’s body, forcefully pulling the tachi embedded in the girl’s shoulder.
"I’ve heard about Chichu Family’s genetic modification technology. How many times has this guy been modified, her bones are so hard my blade couldn’t cut through."
"How to explain to the association?" Lei Wu looked at the others.
"Take it one step at a time." Ghost said.
"Sin, sin." Panyan clasped his hands together, shaking his head and sighing.
Curved Moon shook his head, not saying much. This sort of thing, they had done it many times before.
"In the next life, remember to show respect to our predecessors when you see them."
Lei Wu let out a long breath, looked up, the room overhead crisscrossed with red light, piercing alarms echoing in the control zone.
"Finish up before my family gets here."
...
"Lai Qing, you..."
Faced with such a volume of truth at once, Li Liujin was somewhat unable to accept it. The girl guard who had been protecting her all along had such a past.
"Ah, young and impulsive," Lei Wu said nonchalantly. "This is nothing, I’ve done plenty wrong, but this damned world is just like that."
"Your Highness, if you truly wish to vie with your brother for the title of Patriarch, you need to be prepared."
"Hmm..." Li Liujin’s face was covered with a few degrees of gravity.
"Afterward, we encountered a High-level Insect Race under the base, and that guy claimed to be Solomon."
As if recalling past scenes, Lei Wu crossed her arms, a trace of displeasure appearing on her face.
"Those company dogs couldn’t spit out an ivory. The Eight-Spider Nest Mother’s right limb was awake, but they enticed us to extract samples by claiming it was dormant. Just after extracting samples, the Insect Race arrived."
"Insects swarmed from nearby, the whole base fell, and during the fight with the High-level Insect Race, Panyan died, Ghost couldn’t save that guy. Later, Ghost and I tried to leave the base with the briefcase..."
Lei Wu’s thoughts were pulled back into a memory.
The corridor was dark, red light flickering on both sides illuminating the outline of Ghost’s face.
Behind them, the corridor collapsed into layers of kaleidoscopes, countless illusions vanished in destruction. You could see a blurry figure far away, his figure thin, pacing at the edge of illusions.
Wherever he walked, the surrounding light twisted; he seemed to be laughing, his figure like a reflection in the rain, tearing and reassembling, his sardonic laughter filling the corridor.
"Damn it, that guy chased us again."
"Solomon, I’ve never heard of this guy before, High-level Insect Race... to hell with the High-level Insect Race!"
"That damned Dr. Yang." Lei Wu resisted the severe pain on her body. "A research lunatic. Since he mentioned the right limb, we should have left. Now it’s worse, Panyan’s dead, and you and I will die too!"
"*Listen to ancient teachings* unknown ramblings*"
Solomon’s ethereal prayer sounded from behind. He was clearly walking, yet his speed surpassed the two. Ghost could feel the distance between them was closing.
Ghost stopped, the corridor behind him continued collapsing, seemingly about to devour him at any moment.
"Take the moon; I’ll hold him off."
Ignoring Lei Wu’s opposition, he pushed the unconscious girl along with the briefcase into Lei Wu’s arms, turned on his heels, and ran towards Solomon with his blade.
The corridor, tens of meters long, seemed incredibly protracted, the tangible measure infinitely elongated. The closer he got to Solomon, the smaller Ghost’s figure appeared. In the end, Ghost became unreachable, Solomon became the shadow hanging over the corridor, and the phantoms of destruction engulfed everything.
"Damn you, Ghost!" Lei Wu cursed furiously.
"If you want to die, just die. Why burden me with a deadweight?"
"Damn, damn, damn!"
Swearing profusely, Lei Wu tried with all her might to support the girl as she ran forward. She swore it was the most prolonged and agonizing time of her life.
Unaware of how much time had passed,
She crossed the corridor, reached the other shore.
When the surrounding illusions shattered, Lei Wu suddenly realized she had already left the base. Everything before seemed like her hallucination.
Only Ghost and Panyan had vanished, as if evaporated into thin air, and the fire above the distant base reached the horizon, coloring the sky red.
Lei Wu was overwhelmed by unprecedented fatigue, yearning to rest for a moment when strange noises came from behind.
She turned back, witnessing a scene she would never forget. Under the eerie yet tranquil moonlight, the Curved Moon hovered high in the sky; her smile bizarre, her form tugged and torn by an invisible force, transforming into surrounding digits and equations.
Curved Moon pulled the Scepter out of her belly.
The briefcase fell to the ground,
The inside was empty.
