Chapter 285: 285. I Thought She Forget, But... She’s The One That Bringing It Up!
Madison moved around the counter, her steps quiet but heavy with intention. She didn’t stop at a polite distance; she stepped into his personal space, closing the gap until the heat of her body was a palpable force against him.
She stood there, poised and unmoving, in that suspended state of a woman caught between several conflicting truths, waiting for the internal storm to settle into a single, decisive direction.
"You’re doing that thing," she said, her voice a low, intimate velvet that cut through the morning quiet. "That thing where you say nothing, and you just let me stand here, drowning in my own decisions."
Mike didn’t flinch. He didn’t move to close the remaining inch between them, but his gaze was a physical weight on her.
"You make better decisions when you aren’t being prompted," he countered, his voice a dark, steady rumble.
"That’s not a compliment, Mike," she said, though her eyes betrayed her, searching his for a crack in the armor.
"It is," he said, leaning in just enough to make her breath hitch. "It means I trust your judgment."
"I don’t need to steer you... You know exactly where you’re going."
’She wants me to lead,’ Mike thought, his eyes darkening as he watched the pulse jump in her throat. ’She wants the friction of a command, but she’s too proud to ask for it.’
’She wants to be hunted, but she wants to be the one who decides when to be caught.’
She looked at him then, and the look was different; it was a look that hadn’t existed weeks ago. The polished, professional mask of Madison Reed, the woman designed for boardrooms and high-stakes negotiations, had been stripped away.
In its place stood something raw, something genuinely open. She wasn’t performing anymore; she was standing in a kitchen, making a different, far more dangerous kind of calculation.
"I’ll text you about the consulting contact," she said, her voice reclaiming its composure, though the intensity remained. "This week."
"Alright," Mike said. It was a simple acknowledgment, a way of giving her the space she needed to maintain her dignity.
But she didn’t move. The air between them remained charged, a high-voltage current that refused to ground.
"You’re not going to walk me out," she observed, her eyes challenging him, testing the boundaries of his restraint.
"I don’t think you need to be walked out," Mike said, his tone laced with a subtle, masculine confidence. "You know exactly how to find your way."
"That’s the point," she said, a small, sharp smile playing on her lips. "That you know that."
She held his gaze for one final, searing moment, a silent pact made in the quiet of the kitchen, and then she broke it. She gathered her things from the chair, her movements efficient but lacking their usual briskness.
She walked toward the door, but just as she reached the threshold, she paused and turned back one last time.
"The eggs were actually good," she said, her voice carrying a hint of a challenge. "And not because you told me they were."
"They actually were."
"I know," Mike said. He didn’t need her validation; he already knew the truth of it.
She made a soft, huffed sound, the ghost of a laugh, the kind a woman makes when she’s not quite ready to surrender to the amusement of the moment, and then she was gone.
Mike sat at the counter in the sudden, ringing silence. He picked up his cup and finished the last of the coffee, the bitterness lingering on his tongue.
He looked around the kitchen, and the realization hit him: the room still smelled of her. Her perfume, her skin, the essence of her presence had permeated the air, and he knew it would linger there, a haunting reminder, for the rest of the morning no matter how much he tried to scrub the memory away.
He sat there, a predator in a temporary lull, feeling the weight of the connection they had forged.
[MADISON REED: MAXIMUM BOND CONFIRMED.]
[POST BOND BEHAVIOR PATTERN: DEVOTION, INITIATIVE, RESOURCE OFFERING.]
[SHE IS NO LONGER JUST A PLAYER IN THE GAME; SHE IS AN INVESTOR IN YOUR ASCENSION. SHE WILL GIVE YOU THINGS YOU DID NOT ASK FOR. LET HER.]
The heavy silence of the apartment was suddenly punctured by a sharp, frantic knocking at the door. It wasn’t the polite, rhythmic knock of a business associate or a neighbor; it was the impatient, agitated drumming of someone who was currently losing a war with their own pride.
Mike, still sitting at the counter with his coffee, didn’t move. A slow, knowing smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth. He knew that knock.
He knew the frantic energy behind it. He took a slow, deliberate sip of his coffee, savoring the anticipation.
When he finally stood and walked to the door, he didn’t open it immediately. He waited a beat, letting the tension build, before pulling it open.
Madison was standing there, her designer handbag clutched so tightly in her hand that her knuckles were white. Her hair, usually a perfect, polished mane, was slightly mussed, and her cheeks were flushed with a deep, unmistakable crimson.
She looked less like the high-powered consultant he knew and more like a woman who had been running a marathon through a thunderstorm of her own emotions.
She didn’t say hello. She didn’t offer a polite smile.
Instead, she stepped into the threshold, her eyes flashing with a mixture of fury and profound shyness.
"You are a bastard, Mike," she snapped, her voice trembling despite her attempt at a stern tone. "A calculated, infuriating, absolute bastard."
Mike leaned against the doorframe, crossing his arms over his chest, his expression one of calm, amused observation. "That’s a hell of an opening, Madison."
"Did you practice that in the elevator?"
"Don’t you dare!" she hissed, stepping fully into the apartment, her heels clicking sharply against the hardwood.
She turned to face him, her chest heaving. "You think you’re so clever, don’t you?"
"You think you can just... just act like this morning was some normal, civilized breakfast?"
"Like you didn’t spend the entire night treating me like a... like a fucking dog!"
The word hung in the air, raw and unrefined, a stark contrast to her usual vocabulary. The sheer vulnerability of her admitting it using such a vulgar, degrading term made the air in the room feel electric.
Mike couldn’t hold it in any longer. A low, booming laugh erupted from his chest, a sound of pure, triumphant joy.
He laughed until his sides ached, his eyes crinkling with genuine amusement.
"A dog?" he managed to choke out between laughs. "Is that what we’re calling it now?"
"Yes!" she cried, throwing her hands up in exasperation, her face turning an even deeper shade of red. "You’re doing it on purpose!"
"You’re acting all cool, all ’trusting her judgment’ and ’eggs were good,’ just so you don’t have to acknowledge the fact that you had me on a leash, crawling through the dirt in a park, barking and growling like a common animal!"
"You’re trying to erase it! You’re trying to pretend the ’professional Madison’ didn’t just get completely demolished by you!"
Mike stepped toward her, his laughter subsiding into a warm, predatory grin. He reached out, catching her by the waist and pulling her flush against him, forcing her to look up into his eyes.
"I wasn’t trying to erase it, Madison," he murmured, his voice dropping to that dark, intimate rumble that always made her knees weak. "I was just waiting."
She blinked, her anger momentarily faltering. "Waiting for what?"
"Waiting for you to be the one to say it," he teased, his thumb tracing the line of her jaw. "I knew you were stewing in it."
"I could see it in the way you looked at the eggs."
"I knew you were dying to bring it up, but you were too damn proud to be the first one to break the ’civilized’ act."
"I am not too proud," she lied poorly, her breath hitching as his warmth seeped into her.
"You are," he countered, his grin widening. "You wanted to maintain the illusion of the boardroom queen for just a little bit longer."
"But you couldn’t help it. The ’dog’ wanted her master to acknowledge her."
"Shut up!" she whispered, though there was no real heat in the command.
She leaned her forehead against his chest, a long, defeated sigh escaping her. "It’s unfair..."
"You get to sit there acting like a king, while I have to walk around all day wondering if my pussy still feels like it’s leaking your semen."
Mike chuckled, a deep, vibrating sound that she felt in her own bones. He wrapped his arms around her, holding her tight, enjoying the delicious friction of her frustration.
"Well," he whispered into her ear, "since we’ve finally addressed the elephant in the room... maybe we should go back to the ’dog’ part for a little while before you head to your meeting?"
Madison pulled back just enough to look at him, her eyes narrowed, a small, dangerous smile finally playing on her lips. "Only if you promise not to act like a ’civilized gentleman’ for the next hour."
"Deal," Mike said, and he didn’t waste another second.
