Chapter 157: The Queen Still Breathes
[Jake’s POV]
The SUV tore down the private road with two cars behind us and Sofia’s photograph in my hand.
For a few seconds, no one spoke. Not because there was nothing to say, but because every word felt too small beside the image in my lap. Sofia Aldridge sat in that chair with her wrist restrained, calm enough to make the room around her look weak. Whoever had taken the photograph wanted me to see captivity. What I saw was refusal.
That was Sofia.
Even trapped, she looked like she was judging the quality of the trap.
Claire turned from the front passenger seat, her face pale beneath the passing flashes of moonlight. "Show me."
I handed her the photograph.
She took it carefully. The moment she saw Sofia’s wrist, her jaw tightened. She did not gasp. Claire rarely wasted breath on things that did not help. But her eyes changed, and that was worse.
"She’s alive," Ethan said quietly.
"Yes," I said.
Adrian Cross sat between Darius and Ethan like a man regretting every career choice that had led him into our car. His coat was torn, his hair damp with sweat, and the casual amusement he had carried inside the lodge was gone. He kept glancing through the rear window at the pursuing headlights.
"She wanted you to know that," Adrian said.
Darius looked at him. "Talk less."
Adrian lifted both hands slightly. "I’m trying to be helpful."
"You are trying to stay alive."
"Those overlap."
The first pursuing car gained on us as the road curved through the trees. Our driver, one of Darius’s men, took the bend hard enough to throw Ethan against the door. He cursed under his breath and grabbed his ribs.
Claire passed the photograph back to me. "Nia is running the image now. She needs details. Window shape, light direction, furniture, anything."
I looked down at Sofia again.
Pale blouse. Dark chair. Window to her right. Curtains heavy, not modern. A narrow slice of daylight behind her. No city reflection. No obvious exterior. The restraint was black leather, thin and expensive. Not prison equipment. Not improvised. Made for control without looking crude.
That made my stomach turn.
"It’s not a basement," I said.
Claire relayed it immediately. "Not a basement. Natural light. Old room. Expensive chair. Heavy curtains."
Adrian leaned forward slightly. "You won’t find her from the room."
I looked at him. "You are very confident for a man who was hiding under a dead house."
"I wasn’t hiding."
Darius said, "You were hiding."
"I was waiting."
"With men shooting at you."
"Poorly."
Ethan gave a dry laugh, then winced. "I hate that I like him a little."
"I don’t," Darius said.
Adrian wisely stopped smiling.
The road opened ahead into the main stretch leading toward the county route. Behind us, the first car’s headlights flared. It was close now.
Claire braced one hand against the dashboard. "Jake, Nia says backup is four minutes out."
"We don’t have four minutes."
Darius looked at the side mirror. "They want us before the main road."
"Can we lose them?"
The driver answered, "Not on this road."
Darius checked his weapon. "Then we change the road."
He reached forward and tapped the driver’s shoulder. The SUV swung suddenly left onto an old maintenance track barely visible between the trees. Tires slammed over roots and wet dirt. Branches scraped both sides of the vehicle like nails against metal. Behind us, the first pursuing car hesitated too late and overshot the turn. The second made it, but badly, fishtailing as it followed.
Ethan groaned. "I would like to file a complaint with the road."
"Denied," Claire said.
The System appeared.
**[Ding!]**
**[Urgent Objective Active!]**
**Objective: Escape pursuit with Sofia evidence intact.]**
**Reward: Location Fragment.]**
**Penalty: Loss of Sofia evidence.]**
No joke.
Again.
The SUV bounced hard, and the photograph almost slipped from my hand. I tucked it inside my jacket, against my chest, as if that could somehow keep her safer.
Adrian noticed.
"She planned for you," he said.
I looked at him. "What does that mean?"
"It means Sofia Aldridge does not trust rescues. She trusts leverage."
"That still does not answer me."
"She hired three separate contingency routes before she disappeared. I was one. There were others. I never met them."
"What were you supposed to do?"
"Watch for unauthorized use of her emergency authority. If it happened, I was to retrieve the dead drop at the lodge and deliver the phrase."
"The queen still breathes."
"Yes."
"Why you?"
Adrian hesitated.
Darius shifted slightly.
Adrian noticed and chose honesty. "Because I used to work for Aldridge internal risk. Quiet department. Very boring name. Very interesting files."
Claire turned sharply. "You were Aldridge?"
"Contracted. Not permanent."
"Why leave?"
"Because Sofia discovered I was selling information."
The car went very quiet.
Ethan slowly turned his head. "That is a bold confession inside a vehicle full of armed people."
Adrian looked at me. "She caught me. Then she offered me a choice. Prison, disappearance, or employment doing the same thing for her instead of against her."
I almost smiled despite everything.
That sounded like Sofia too.
"What did you choose?"
"I am sitting here, aren’t I?"
Darius said, "For now."
The second pursuing car slammed into the rear of the SUV.
The impact threw us forward. Claire hit the side of her seat, Ethan cursed, and Adrian nearly ended up in Darius’s lap. The driver corrected fast, but the track narrowed ahead. Trees pressed close on both sides. Another hit would spin us.
Darius lowered the window.
Cold air blasted through the car.
"What are you doing?" Adrian asked.
Darius did not answer.
He leaned halfway out, fired three controlled shots behind us, then ducked back inside as return fire cracked through the trees. One bullet punched through the rear glass, spraying fragments across the seats. Ethan yanked Adrian down by the collar before he could take it in the face.
"You’re welcome," Ethan snapped.
Adrian, breathing hard, said, "Thank you."
"Don’t make it weird."
The pursuing car swerved, recovered, then kept coming.
Claire’s voice sharpened. "Jake, there’s a bridge ahead. Old service bridge. Nia says it leads back to the county road, but it may not support both vehicles."
"May not?"
"She used the phrase structurally questionable."
Ethan looked at the roof. "I hate hackers."
The driver pushed harder.
The bridge appeared through the trees, narrow, wooden, and old enough to have opinions about weight. Our SUV hit it first. The planks roared beneath us. For one horrible second, the whole structure shuddered like it was considering surrendering to gravity.
Then we crossed.
The pursuing car followed.
Darius looked back. "Too close."
I grabbed the loose emergency flare from the side compartment. "Window."
Darius opened it again.
Claire looked at me. "Jake."
"I’m not jumping."
"That is not as comforting as you think."
I struck the flare, red light exploding inside the car, then hurled it through the broken rear window. It landed on the bridge planks behind us, rolled once, and disappeared beneath the pursuing car.
The driver behind us swerved.
On a normal road, he might have recovered.
On a wet wooden bridge barely wide enough for arrogance, he did not.
The car slammed into the side rail. Wood shattered. The front half dropped, wheels spinning in empty air, headlights tilting down toward the black creek below. The second car hung there for one breath, engine screaming.
Then the bridge gave way.
The car vanished into darkness with a crash of metal, wood, and water.
No one cheered.
We hit the county road seconds later, the SUV fishtailing before finding grip on asphalt. The first pursuing car was gone, either circling back or deciding the night had become too expensive.
Claire was already on comms. "Nia, we’re clear for now. Send cleanup to the bridge. We need police noise redirected before locals call it in."
Ethan sat back slowly, face pale. "I am never complaining about soup again."
"You will," I said.
"Probably."
Adrian looked at me like he was reassessing something.
"What?" I asked.
"You are less polished than the files suggested."
"I have been having a difficult week."
"You’ve been back for four days."
"Exactly."
Darius finally lowered his weapon.
Claire turned around again. Her eyes moved to my jacket, where the photograph was hidden.
"We need to know who else Sofia hired," she said.
Adrian shook his head. "I don’t know names."
"Then give us routes."
"I can give one. A phrase tied to a bank archive in Geneva. Sofia called it the Blue Ledger."
Claire’s expression changed. "That sounds familiar."
"It should," Adrian said. "It contains old Aldridge emergency holdings, private blackmail reserves, and records of who tried to move against Sofia before she vanished."
I looked at him.
"And you waited until now to say that?"
"I wanted to survive the bridge first."
Darius said, "Reasonable."
Everyone looked at him.
He shrugged once. "It was."
The System appeared.
**[Ding!]**
**[Location Fragment Acquired.]**
**Lead: Blue Ledger.]**
**Connection: Sofia contingency route / Geneva archive.]**
**Mission Progress: 31%]**
I leaned back as the SUV sped toward the city.
Sofia had not gone quietly.
She had left teeth in the walls.
A photograph. A phrase. A messenger. A ledger.
Not enough to find her yet, but enough to know she had expected betrayal and prepared blood for anyone who thought her absence meant surrender.
Claire looked at me, softer now but still angry.
"You are not going to Geneva tonight."
"I wasn’t going to say that."
"Yes, you were."
I looked out at the road ahead.
Maybe I was.
Maybe the old me would have.
But Sofia was alive, and alive meant time mattered. Not panic. Not noise. Time.
"No," I said. "Tonight we get back. We verify Adrian. We lock Aldridge’s vote. Then we follow the ledger."
Claire watched me for a long moment.
Then she nodded.
Ethan whispered, "Growth."
My left shoelace untied itself.
I looked down.
Even Adrian noticed.
"What the hell was that?"
Nobody answered.
The SUV drove on through the dark, carrying us back toward Apex Tower with Sofia’s photograph pressed against my chest and the first real path to her hidden somewhere inside a ledger in Geneva.
The queen still breathed.
Now we had to keep her kingdom alive long enough to reach her.
It
