Chapter 59: *Basic spells*

One hour later, they were both eating breakfast after having enjoyed each other, taking a shower together, and getting dressed. Kevin barely had time to finish his hour of stretching before heading to class, as he had been interrupted earlier by Axel’s insatiable appetite.

In the end, Kevin managed to fit in his two hours of training, satisfy his man, prepare breakfast, and still arrive on time for his spells class. The rooms for the spells class were in another building right next to where they had their alchemy class. There were only eight rooms in the entire building, and they were all quite spacious.

Each group of students was assigned their own classroom, and for Kevin’s group, it was Room C. The room was completely empty except for 23 dummies, which were presumably there to serve as targets. The professor, who was already present, motioned for them to stand in the circles drawn on the floor, facing the dummies.

When everyone had arrived, he finally introduced himself, "Welcome to your first spells class. My name is Julian, and I will be your teacher throughout the year. Some of you already know the basic spells, so at the start, I will focus more on those who have never practiced them. To make it easier for me, all of you will come forward to take small colored squares that represent your elements and place them in your circle. Put your main element on the right—you will need to do this in each of our classes."

Professor Julian then stepped aside, allowing everyone to see a small table with squares of five different colors behind him. The students complied with his instructions and approached the table to retrieve the colored squares representing their elements. Kevin was the only one with three elements, and when the other students noticed him, a heavy silence settled in the classroom.

They remembered that their teacher had stated the day before that Kevin had an affinity for three elements, but what disturbed them was that he had crafted not one, but two Low-Grade Healing Potions with his relatively low Soul Force reserve. Meanwhile, others with a larger reserve had struggled all afternoon to create just one potion.

Now, they could all see that his main element was lightning, the rarest of all the elements. If they were already feeling annoyed before, how should they feel now? Even Professor Julian seemed speechless for a moment, but he quickly regained his composure. He had heard that a new student had three elements, with lightning being the primary one, but he hadn’t expected to have him in his class.

Julian felt inwardly jubilant; it meant that the leaders of the Sun Sect regarded him as the most qualified to guide Kevin. He finally continued where he left off, "Now, for those of you who don’t already know it : the basic spells are essentially the same, regardless of the elements with which you have an affinity. Also, we only use the spiritual energy around us to create them.

Once you are able to see and gather the particles of your elements into your basic spells, then your basic spells will become specific to your elements and will be assigned a level. The level is determined by the number of particles you manage to introduce into your spell; it doesn’t have to be something large to be a high-level spell. Sometimes, a simple arrow with a very dense concentration of particles can be qualified as a level 3 or 4 spell.

Let me show you what I mean when I say a basic arrow spell. I will transform it into a water element spell of level 1, called the Water Arrow spell, and then I’ll demonstrate the difference between a level 1 and a level 2 of this spell. Focus on the spiritual energy around us and observe carefully."

Kevin concentrated on the spiritual energy surrounding them and clearly saw an arrow forming in Professor Julian’s hand. The concentration of spiritual energy was such that the initially invisible arrow quickly became a milky-colored projectile.

Kevin could hear the students gasp in surprise, but as he had already experienced this with Alan yesterday, it wasn’t new for him. He didn’t attempt to copy the technique since Professor Julian had been clear that basic spells only utilized spiritual energy. What intrigued him was what would happen next.

Professor Julian threw the arrow at the dummy in front of him, and an indistinguishable mark appeared on it. Kevin thought that this basic spell was rather weak. Then, without uttering a word, he replicated the exact same action again, while Kevin this time activated his observation skill.

He didn’t want to miss any opportunity to learn a new spell, and a message popped up instantly:

[ Water Element Spell Level 1: Water Arrow requires 150 Soul Force Points to activate the observation skill. Yes / No. ]

Kevin immediately thought ’yes’, and the same message from before appeared:

[ Congratulations, you have successfully copied the Water Element Spell Level 1: Water Arrow. ]

Kevin remained calm as he watched the professor’s demonstration, but he was delighted. Just for that, it was worth attending the spell lessons.

The milky arrow transformed into an electric blue arrow, and Professor Julian launched it at the dummy once more. This time, it resulted in a much more impactful outcome. They all heard a small explosion as the Water Arrow made contact with the dummy, and a hole the size of a fist appeared in its chest. 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮

"Too cool," Kevin thought, and it was only the level 1 spell. Their teacher then crafted one last Water Arrow, and Kevin was surprised when the System notified him that he had already copied this spell.

Well, he didn’t dwell on that too much and focused on the events unfolding in front of his eyes. This time, the electric blue color of the Water Arrow was even more brilliant and the arrow itself was significantly larger. It was very impressive.

Julian then dispelled the spell and informed them that if he had launched it against that poor dummy, it would have exploded into a thousand pieces. He added that it would also have made a hole in the wall in front of them.

Kevin was genuinely excited; this was just too amazing!
