Chapter 362: Lazarus’ Grievances

Standing beneath the crimson sky of the False World, Damian and Lazarus faced one another across the deserted street. White mist drifted lazily between abandoned vehicles while countless crimson barrier plates hovered overhead like fragments of a shattered mirror frozen in the heavens. Neither of them moved.

Their murderous intent filled the empty street so completely that even the wind seemed unwilling to pass between them. They had not crossed blades immediately because this conversation had been inevitable.

Ever since the night Bathin launched the first assassination attempt, Damian had known there was someone standing behind it all. Now, after months of bloodshed, schemes and failed murders, he was finally standing before the true mastermind.

"There was a time the mere mention of my stepbrothers frightened me," Damian said, his voice carrying neither fear nor excitement. He simply stared into Lazarus’ golden eyes with open disdain. "That ended the day I realized Gods are no different from mortals. Just creatures with insatiable desire, a horrible sense of entitlement and the power to back it up."

Lazarus merely shrugged, his expression remaining as exhausted as ever. There wasn’t even anger in his face. Instead, he looked at Damian the way an old scholar might look at an ignorant student who had just reached an obvious conclusion.

"And you are any different?" he asked indifferently. "Is there truly anyone different?"

Damian frowned.

For the first time since this conversation began, he couldn’t immediately answer. Thinking back over the past year, he had taken kingdoms, stolen inheritances, charmed judges, manipulated politicians and bent countless lives toward his own desired future. Whenever something stood in his way, he simply reached out and took it because he possessed the strength to do so.

The silence alone answered Lazarus’ question. Seeing Damian unable to argue, Lazarus gave a faint nod before speaking again.

"Do you know why I specifically came for you?"

Damian slowly raised an eyebrow before shaking his head.

"Isn’t it obvious?" he replied. "My inheritance."

To his surprise, Lazarus looked genuinely confused before giving him a look that practically asked whether he had lost his mind.

"Why would I want your inheritance?"

His tone made the question sound almost ridiculous.

"Don’t misjudge me. I’m greedy, but I’m not stupid. The moment one of us claims another Prince’s inheritance, it becomes a declaration to the entire Underworld that we seek the Demon Lord’s throne and the title of perfect demon lord. At that point every Prince gains both the right and the obligation to unite against that individual. I have absolutely no interest in becoming everyone’s common enemy. Not even Sol is foolish enough to cross that line."

Buzz!

Both Damian and Rin froze. Neither had considered that possibility before.

For thousands of years there had never been another perfect Demon Lord. Every succession had ultimately been decided through the Elder Council because no Prince dared attack other Prince’s and steal their inheritances first. The consequences were simply too severe.

Looking back now, everything suddenly made sense. The inheritances weren’t merely powers. They were political statements.

The first Prince to seize another inheritance immediately painted a target upon his own back.

"So why?" Damian finally asked.

He genuinely needed to know.

Why him?

Why had this deity repeatedly tried to erase him from existence?

Lazarus slowly smiled. It was almost as though he had waited months to answer this single question.

"Before Hazel met Lin Qui... she and the Kitsune Clan served beneath me."

Buzz!

Damian’s face immediately twisted with annoyance. Every scattered piece of the puzzle suddenly slid into place.

The more it made sense, the more infuriating it became.

"Hold on, motherfucker."

Damian raised one hand to stop him, his brows tightly knitted.

"Don’t tell me I went through all this because my predecessor stole your bitch."

The words came out almost as a growl.

Months of assassination attempts from several demons was over this?

"Watch your language, human," Lazarus hissed, golden light briefly flickering within his tired eyes. "It’s not just that... but it is close enough."

"I told you those girls are trouble," Rin muttered while folding his tiny paws together with visible disappointment.

Damian immediately threw both hands into the air.

"Are you stupid?" he snapped. "How the hell does any of this have anything to do with me?"

For the first time during their meeting, Lazarus actually shrank back slightly. A tiny bead of sweat appeared upon his forehead.

Then his expression darkened once more.

"Because after Lin Qui died..." he growled through clenched teeth. "She sought you out. That was her opportunity to return to me and make amends. Instead... she chose another worthless human living in a world I had marked out for myself and now you have the guts to lay claim to my world."

"What a loser," Rin added with complete sincerity.

Lazarus’ face instantly contorted with rage. The exhausted calm he’d maintained until now nearly shattered.

Damian rubbed his forehead before letting out an irritated sigh.

"Alright... let’s try being reasonable."

He pointed directly at Lazarus.

"Let’s say you succeeded. You kill me. The inheritance passes to another mortal and then the girls choose him too. Then what? You hunt him too?"

Without the slightest hesitation Lazarus nodded.

"Hazel is my possession and whoever possesses her will suffer my eternal wrath."

Rin slowly facepalmed.

"We should hand Hazel over to Pride and see if he maintains this energy."

The words had an immediate effect. Every trace of anger vanished from Lazarus’ face. For a brief second pure terror flashed across his eyes.

Damian immediately smacked Rin across the back of his head.

"Don’t be stupid. We’re talking about my wife."

Rin simply looked away. Not an ounce of guilt could be found on his tiny face.

Damian returned his attention to Lazarus. His purple eyes slowly brightened until they resembled burning stars.

"You were rejected. Move on."

It wasn’t a request.

It was a warning.

Lazarus answered with nothing more than a mocking smile.

Swoosh!

His body vanished. The air where he had stood distorted before he suddenly appeared directly before Damian, casually extending one hand toward him.

Damian reacted instantly. He raised his own arm to intercept the incoming grab.

Pa!

Their hands met and Lazarus merely wrapped his fingers around Damian’s wrist.

At the exact same moment...

Bam!

Damian’s knee exploded into Lazarus’ abdomen. The impact unleashed a deafening shockwave that ripped through the empty street.

Lazarus’ body folded around the strike before being launched backwards like a cannonball, smashing through abandoned vehicles and tearing apart the pavement as he disappeared hundreds of meters down the road.

Damian remained standing exactly where he was. His eyebrow slowly rose.

"Is he stupid or something?"

He stared toward the distant smoke cloud with genuine confusion.

"What exactly was grabbing my hand supposed to accomplish?"

Swoosh!

Rin suddenly leaped off Damian’s shoulder. For the first time since the battle began terror covered his face.

"Watch out!"

He screamed with enough urgency to make Damian instinctively tense. But it was already too late.

Pa!

Damian’s eyes widened. The arm Lazarus had touched only moments earlier suddenly moved on its own. His own hand shot upward like a venomous serpent before clamping tightly around his own throat.

The grip was murderous. His fingers dug into his neck with terrifying force. Every muscle in that arm ignored Damian’s commands as though it no longer belonged to him.

It was strangling him!!!
