Chapter 1078: Chapter 1079: God Fiend
A promise made in the name of the Unknown God had to be kept no matter what. The contract Damon and Xander signed was written upon an oath scroll obtained from the System.
Xander wanted vengeance, and Damon wanted to keep his secrets and lies. In return, an innocent child would be the one who suffered.
Damon was powerful now.
Very powerful.

from the weakling he had been when he first obtained the System.
He emerged from the tomb into a room within the capital. Taking a deep breath, he reached into his shadow and pulled out a cloak. The dark garment unfurled like living darkness before settling over his shoulders, its long folds flowing like shadows and concealing his form completely.
Damon took a single step.
That was all he did.
His power had reached a level where distance had become almost meaningless. He could feel the magic saturating the air around him, could feel the changes within his own body. The thing that had held him back from reaching the Sixth Class Advancement no longer existed.
Because he was finally going through with it.
He was going to commit this cruel act.
A faint smile touched his lips.
It wasn’t even the worst thing he had done.
Now he stood upon a vast balcony overlooking the lights of the city below. The night air was fresh. A large fountain sat nearby, its waters glimmering beneath the moonlight. Chairs had been arranged neatly around a small table where several baby toys lay scattered.
Silence lingered when he appeared.
A man stood there wrapped in a large fur cape. The night was cold, very cold. Even someone like Damon could feel it. He wondered why anyone would bring a baby onto a balcony in weather like this.
A soft cry came from a small toddler who reached up with tiny hands and playfully tugged at Xander’s hair.
Xander smiled softly and gently adjusted the child in his arms.
Damon stepped beside him, studying his expression.
"It was a night like this... wasn’t it... when your brother died?"
"Died..." Xander whispered.
His smile disappeared.
"No. He was murdered. And I demand retribution."
"Don’t try to sound righteous with me. It’s revenge. Say it like it is. Whatever the case, I believe you owe me something."
Xander looked down at his son.
The child happily grabbed at his father’s cloak, completely unaware of the conversation taking place above his head.
"Yes," Xander said calmly. "And I intend to honor our agreement. Godric has said his first word, and by our oath he is yours for the foreseeable future. I can’t for the life of me understand why you would want a child. However, if you made this demand to test my resolve, know that it remains unshaken."
Damon remained silent for a moment.
Even if they wanted to back out now, it was too late.
The contract would force them to uphold their ends of the bargain.
"What choice has brought you here, Xander? What has brought me here?" Damon asked quietly. "You admire your brother, but I assure you he was no saint. The ideal you admire is covered by the lenses of melancholy, nostalgia, and your own childish delusions."
His gaze drifted toward the unlucky child in Xander’s arms.
The baby continued playing happily, unaware of what would happen next.
"Growing up is understanding that our childhood heroes are human too. The man you idolized and reality are very different things. Wake up to the truth. Face reality."
"Enough."
The word emerged cold and sharp.
Xander’s eyes never left Damon.
"I’m sure you didn’t come here to lecture me on some nonsense philosophy, and I’m not here to listen either. You will keep your promise, not because I trust you to, but because you made the mistake of using a binding oath."
Damon sneered.
Then a smile slowly spread across his face.
"I will. No doubt about that. I just hope you keep that same attitude when you finally face the truth. I can promise you, it’s as bitter a pill to swallow as the gall of a basilisk."
He reached out his hands toward Godric Ravenscroft.
Funny.
Xander had named his son after his brother.
The last time Damon saw someone named Godric Ravenscroft, he killed him.
Now fate had somehow placed him in a situation where he was responsible for taking care of another Godric Ravenscroft.
His arms remained outstretched.
For a moment Xander didn’t move.
He simply looked at his son.
Really looked at him.
The tiny fingers gripping his cloak.
The innocent smile.
The bright eyes that trusted him completely.
Xander took a slow breath.
His hands hesitated.
Just for a moment.
Then he pushed the child into Damon’s waiting arms.
At that exact moment someone stepped onto the balcony.
She held a magical recording device in her hands.
A beautiful blonde-haired woman.
It took Emilia only a fraction of a second to understand what was happening.
Or perhaps it was simply a mother’s instinct.
Her body erupted with magical power.
The balcony trembled.
Then she shot forward with everything she had.
Damon reacted instantly.
One arm wrapped protectively around the child while his cloak spread outward like living darkness, shielding the baby completely.
The collision shattered the balcony.
Stone exploded.
Glass burst apart.
The entire structure collapsed into dust and debris.
Damon vanished before the destruction could reach him.
A desperate scream followed him into the darkness.
The baby immediately began to cry.
His tiny face turned red.
Tears streamed down his cheeks as he reached back toward where his mother had been.
Damon felt dirty.
Not in a way he could ignore.
Not in a way he could rationalize.
For perhaps the first time in a long while, he felt like a genuine monster.
He felt as though he couldn’t even look at himself in a mirror.
And in that moment...
He felt the will of the world acknowledge him.

The child in his arms cried louder and louder.
"Shhh."
Damon’s voice was soft.
The effect was immediate.
The crying stopped.
The child blinked several times before staring up at him with watery eyes.
Slowly Damon turned and began walking through the darkness of the capital city.
As for how Xander would explain this situation to the rest of the world...
That was not his problem
He sighed gazing long into the distance.
