Chapter 77: Solo Debt

Smoke was already leaving the warehouse roof when Ryan reached the first gate.

Three delivery trucks blocked the service road, and a contractor seal flashed above the loading doors.

Ryan stepped from the borrowed clinic van with the recovered Compound Spear shortened under his coat.

"The evidence drives are in the west office," Grace said through his receiver, reading the warehouse map from the command vehicle, "and their self-destruct cycle has already started."

"How long?" Ryan asked, watching a worker drag a sealed crate toward the burning side entrance.

"Seven minutes if the clock is honest," Grace replied, zooming in on the control panel, "four if Mercer built himself a shortcut."

Mika joined the channel before Ryan could answer from the moving command vehicle. "You are medically restricted," she said, watching him through the van camera, "so we are not approving a solo entry because the building looks dramatic on a map."

Ryan studied the black lattice bolted across the loading doors while smoke thickened.

’The warehouse was built to erase paper,’ he thought, feeling Combat Valuation test the anchor points, ’the people inside had chosen a shape that could erase me too.’

"I can reach the drives," Ryan said, checking the spear lock beneath his cuff, "then I can get out before the purge finishes."

"You can reach the doors," Mika replied, and he could hear her keeping the rest of herself level, "those are not the same achievement."

The lattice activated when he crossed the first painted line.

Claim formed beneath his boots, then folded inward as the C-rank suppression field squeezed every boundary flat.

Ryan stepped back before the field could bite deeper into his Portfolio.

"The lattice is rated for a guild leader with support," Grace said, tracing its contractor specifications, "which means they expected a whole team at this trap."

"They got one injured appraiser," Ryan replied, watching the gaps between the bolts.

"That is not a loophole," Mika said.

’It was also not a good point,’ Ryan thought, moving along the side of the van, ’but I had run out of impressive categories for bad decisions.’

Ryan drove the Compound Spear into a seam beside the loading door.

The new lock opened with a gold line along the thrust, then pink current answered through the shaft before the lattice could crush its boundary.

The loading door moved three inches inward.

A rifle shot took the van’s mirror apart above his shoulder.

Ryan went low behind the hood while Combat Valuation marked the roof angle, the weak brace, plus one silhouette moving behind the smoke.

"Mika, roofline at eleven," Ryan said, sliding toward the narrow door gap.

"Already moving," she replied, and the channel carried the hard click of her tonfa locks.

Ryan pushed the spear through the gap, held its gold line against the inner latch, then spent a small Claim platform on the service hinge.

The platform lasted six seconds before the lattice folded it in.

He crossed beneath the door as it dropped, landing inside the warehouse with smoke in his eyes and an evacuation notice repeating through the speaker.

The first aisle held empty crates, cut cables, plus one body camera recording the floor.

’The camera was pointed down on purpose,’ Ryan thought, looking at the dead screen in its red light, ’which meant somebody had remembered that evidence existed.’

"West office, second level," Grace said, changing his route on the map, "then left at cold storage because the central stairs have three armed men."

"That route has three armed men," Ryan said, watching shadows shift between the crates.

"Then it has stopped being the route," Grace replied.

Two contractors stepped into the aisle with shock batons up.

Ryan let the first swing pass, trapped the baton on the spear shaft, then sent the weapon’s stored return through the man’s knee brace.

The second contractor got a baton into Ryan’s ribs before he could turn.

Pain closed around his breath while the suppression lattice pulled at his Portfolio.

"Withdraw to the south door," Mika said, and her voice had lost its camera smile.

"The drives are upstairs," Ryan replied, catching the next strike against his forearm.

"The drives are evidence," Mika said, "your body is evidence too, and it is losing the argument."

Ryan drove his shoulder into the contractor’s chest, hooked the spear behind the man’s belt, then threw him into the nearest crate stack.

The clear aisle lasted only until a man stepped from the cold-storage passage.

His armor had no guild mark, no contractor number, and a narrow B-rank pressure field that bent the floor toward his boots.

"You are the investment account," the operator said, raising one bare hand, "the patron wants you closed before the records leave this building."

Ryan kept the spear low beside his injured knee. "You should ask for better language," he said, watching the pressure field bend around the operator’s heel, "before you ask for a fight."

The hidden operator hit first without another word or warning.

He struck the shaft, drove Ryan through a stack of plastic containers, then brought the pressure field down hard enough to make Ryan’s wounded shoulder scream.

’He was B-adjacent,’ Ryan thought, forcing himself back onto one knee, ’the difference lived in the pressure, not the label.’

Ryan extended the spear, cutting across the operator’s thigh plate, but the thrust died against the armor.

"The new weapon had an old owner," the operator said, smiling without any warmth, "so you have been carrying a borrowed problem."

Ryan spent Claim on the lower stair brace, changed his angle on the narrow platform, then drove the spear into the field instead of the armor.

The gold line split around the operator’s extended hand beneath the pressure field.

For one second, the field opened.

The evidence drives beeped upstairs, so Ryan left the operator alive and ran for the office.

The operator caught him before the office door could close.

Ryan hit the floor beside a steel cabinet while three evidence drives counted down inside an open thermal case.

"Ninety seconds," Grace said through static, loading the remote preservation channel, "connect one drive and I can keep its records."

Ryan reached for the nearest drive, but the operator kicked it across the room.

Ryan struck the case rail with the Compound Spear, then used Hostile Takeover on the self-destruct command.

The hostile command resisted the stolen control for three painful seconds.

He caught one drive, then another, while the third continued its countdown near the operator’s boot.

"Leave it," Grace said, and the order came before fear in her voice.

"Ryan, that is an order," Mika said, as he reached for the third drive.

The operator drove the office desk down on Ryan’s injured arm.

Risk Transfer began to overdraw beneath the lattice pressure around his ribs.

[Risk transfer overdraft: 27 percent]

’One more push keeps the chain alive,’ Ryan thought, feeling the pressure move from his shoulder into his ribs, ’one more push makes the rescue somebody else has to pay for.’

Mika reached the office first and broke the operator’s wrist line with a tonfa burst.

Grace came through the doorway with two recruits, carrying a portable extraction shield between them.

"Release him," Mika said, stepping in front of Ryan with both tonfas locked, "the pursuit is over, and the rescue has started."

Grace planted the shield at the operator’s feet beside the open case. "You have one exit," she said, keeping the preservation channel open on her tablet, "take it without the drives or stay for the evidence team."

The operator went through the window.

Mika chased him to the broken frame, but smoke took him before she could clear the ledge.

The recruits pulled Ryan free while Grace connected the first two drives to the preservation channel.

She caught the third just before the thermal case sealed.

Hostile Takeover held the self-destruct command inside its stolen loop until the timer died.

[Risk transfer overdraft: 34 percent]

[Portfolio impairment: active]

Ryan tried to stand, then folded against the extraction shield.

"You entered alone," Grace said, locking the drives inside her evidence sleeve, "then you left with three people, two drives, and a body that needs a doctor."

"The operator escaped," Ryan replied, tasting smoke at the back of his throat.

Mika crouched beside him, one hand held above his shoulder without touching it. "He escaped without the evidence," she said, "that is the result we assigned ourselves to protect."

’They had forced the right choice on me,’ Ryan thought as the recruits lifted him carefully, ’which was upsetting because I had almost been proud of the wrong one.’

Fire crews reached the eastern gate while Grace opened the recovered index.

Nia’s remote monitor listed Ryan’s shoulder, ribs, plus impaired Portfolio as three separate problems.

The index named a consulting firm, three payment rails, and a shell-clinic administrator.

The final record carried two lines Ryan had never seen before.

[Host behavioral variance exceeds original profile]

[Administrator review requested]

Ryan watched the screen while Mika and Grace kept him between them on the walk back to the van.

The warehouse had burned its paper, its operator, and most of Ryan’s safe choices.

The evidence still pointed toward the people who had paid for the fire.
