"Our guild has surveyed this district for eleven years," he said, "we can pay four thousand for your discovery position, cover today’s wasted travel, then prevent a filing dispute your venture cannot afford."

"Your offer prices our claim as invalid while paying us to surrender it," Ryan replied, watching the captain’s hand rest near the cleaver, "that makes the number evidence instead of consideration."

"It makes the number polite," the captain said, shifting his weight toward the sample rig.

Ryan extended the black spear until its point divided the rival team from the vein.

"Then decline politely from the other side of my range," he said, keeping the point level.

Stone folded across the extraction corridor before anyone reached it.

The corridor now contained two teams, one vein, seven hunters, plus moving bodies inside walls that the original survey had declared solid, which made every step a claim dispute with teeth.

The spear stayed between both teams.

One creature broke through behind the district shield user and dragged him away from the vein before his team finished turning.

Above Ryan’s fully marked spear, the Exchange converted the ownership fight into a survival warning.
