Chapter 247: Settling Old Family Scores

"About time you useless idiots showed up!" he shouted with what little voice he had left, coughing between words. "Where the hell were you?! Look what this bitch did to me!"

His brothers didn’t respond, limiting themselves to silently assessing the situation.

"What are you waiting for?!" Jack continued, pointing a trembling finger first at Ely and then, across the hall, at Mark. "Finish her! And that damn coward over there! I want them both dead! NOW!"

The three men exchanged a brief look among themselves and began advancing toward where Ely and Jack were.

"Damn, the garbage just keeps coming," she muttered, readjusting her grip on her sword and letting out a sigh full of weariness. "Whatever three more, three less, it doesn’t matter, bring as many as they want."

From across the hall, Mark watched the three newcomers advance toward Ely, and he didn’t like the idea of leaving her dealing with three beastmen at once, no matter how strong she was.

’Yuki, I want you to help Ely with those three,’ he called through the mental link. ’I don’t want to risk them catching her off guard between all of them.’

’I don’t think that will be necessary, Master,’ Yuki replied with her usual calm.

’Why not?’ he said, frowning.

’Look more carefully, Master.’

Mark fixed his gaze back on the three beastmen, not fully understanding what Yuki was referring to.

And then he saw it.

The three brothers, instead of heading toward Ely, simply went around her as if she were a piece of furniture in the way, and kept advancing until they positioned themselves around Jack.

The prince was still curled up on the floor in pain.

Ely, who had already been ready to deal with them, blinked in disbelief and lowered her guard slightly, just as bewildered as Mark.

Jack, for his part, looked up at his brothers with an expression of relief.

"About time!" he said in a broken voice. "Stop wasting time and deal with that bitch already!"

"..."

"And then the coward over there! What are you waiting for, you idiots?! It’s an order from your fucking king!"

However, none of them took a step toward Ely. The three stayed motionless around their brother, eyes fixed on him, without saying a single word.

Jack frowned, and his relief began shifting to confusion.

"What... what the hell are you doing?" he asked, glancing sideways at them. "Why are you looking at me like that? I gave you an order! Attack—!"

The man with bear ears and scars shoved his brother with his foot, sending him back to the floor.

Jack let out a scream as he was knocked flying and rolled across the ground.

"WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU’RE DOING?!" he screamed, writhing in pain as a few tears began to spill out. "Have you lost your mind?! I’m your brother! NO! I’m your fucking KING!"

"Our king? How funny you are, Jack," the one with bear ears repeated with a half smile full of accumulated resentment. "Clearly you still don’t understand the situation you’re in."

"Turns out you weren’t so invincible after all, were you, little brother?" the one with deer antlers added, approaching from the other side.

Then all three started beating him.

They took turns driving kicks into his stomach, his back, and his legs, without giving their brother a single moment to recover.

And while none of them intended to kill him, they clearly intended to make him suffer, or rather, to collect on every single humiliation Jack had surely put them through over the years.

"Now who’s the idiot, huh?!" the one with feathers screamed, stomping on his back. "All these goddamn years treating us like we were less than garbage, acting so superior!"

"How does it feel, Jack?!" the one with antlers mocked, driving in another kick. "How does it feel to be the one getting mistreated for once?! Not so fun from this side, is it, you idiot?!"

"You... traitors!" Jack said between blows, spitting blood and uselessly dragging himself across the floor trying to get away from them. "When I recover... when my regeneration comes back... I’m going to kill you all! I’m going to skin you alive! You’ll beg for—! AGH!"

Another blow cut the threat in half.

"Sure, sure, whatever ’His Highness’ says," the one with bear ears replied without the slightest concern, kicking him again.

Ely, who had been watching the entire scene with her sword still in hand, tilted her head.

"Okay, this is strange..." she said with a shrug, and lowered her guard entirely. "Though I have to admit there’s something deeply satisfying about watching a bully get what he deserves at the hands of his own victims."

She turned her back on the spectacle without the slightest concern about being attacked, and walked back to where her Master was, sheathing her sword in the process.

"Is it alright that I didn’t kill him, Master?" she asked upon arriving, jerking her thumb over her shoulder toward Jack, who was still taking his beating. "Though at this rate, those three are going to finish the job for us anyway."

Mark watched the scene for a moment as the three brothers kept venting years of resentment on the fallen prince.

"Let them," he replied with a shrug. "It looks like this has become a family matter... besides, it would be rude to step in the middle of their little settling of scores."

"Hmm... you’re right."

Then there was a brief pause as both watched Jack take another round of kicks and blows.

"Come to think of it... where exactly did those three come from?" Ely said, turning toward her Master with a raised eyebrow. "Because until a moment ago it was just us and the little prince, and then they suddenly appear knocking the door down like it’s nothing."

Mark shrugged again.

"No idea," he admitted with complete honesty.

But just then, Luna approached the group, with Yuki reappearing at her side after having kept her safe throughout the entire fight.

The princess contemplated the scene before her with satisfaction.

Her brothers laying into Jack, who remained on the floor unable to defend himself.

"Well, I see you’ve already met my beloved brothers..." she said with a mocking smile. "Charming, aren’t they?"

And right at that instant, an especially sharp shriek burst from Jack when a kick landed squarely, making Luna burst out laughing.

"Ha, now that’s music to my ears," she commented without the slightest hint of sympathy. "But don’t worry, that poor bastard more than deserves it."

"Wait, weren’t the rest of your brothers supposed to be on Jack’s side?" Mark asked, looking at her with a raised eyebrow. "Or at least, that’s what you told us... How the hell did you get them to turn on him so fast?"

"Honestly, convincing them wasn’t that hard," Luna replied with satisfaction. "While those three were marching here to help their ’beloved’ king, I took a moment to have a little chat with them."

"And what did you tell them?"

"Just the truth," she replied. "That I was no longer alone and that I now had the backing of someone much, much stronger than Jack."

The princess glanced briefly at Mark and the others.

"And that this someone was about to kick our dear brother off the throne whether he liked it or not."

"And that was really enough to bring them over to our side?"

"Darling, you don’t know my brothers... they’ve never been loyal to anyone but themselves," Luna replied with a small laugh. "They only kissed Jack’s boots because he was the strongest and father’s favorite."

"..."

"But the moment it became clear that ship was sinking, and that staying on board only meant going down with it, they didn’t hesitate to abandon him for a single second..." she said without looking away from her brothers. "And the rest, as they say, is history."

Mark stayed quiet for a moment after hearing the princess’s explanation, and in the end couldn’t help a smile forming on his face.

"So they switched sides the moment they saw which way the wind was blowing..."

"Exactly," she said, turning to look at Mark. "Besides, this was the perfect opportunity to pay him back, one by one, for every humiliation he put them through."

"I understand..."

"It’s hard to find someone who hates a bully more than someone who spent years bowing their head in front of him."

Ely, who had been listening to the conversation while keeping an eye on the three brothers just in case, decided to step in.

"Well, all this spectacle is very touching, but..." she said, crossing her arms. "What do we do now?"

Luna wiped the smile from her face, and her expression grew a little more serious.

Then she looked toward the far end of the hall, beyond the empty throne, toward the corridors that led deeper into the palace.

"Now," she said with conviction in her voice. "It’s time to speak with my father..."
