Chapter 76: A Strange Ability
The two surrounding floors were extremely quiet because there were no living humans left there.
There were still animals around, however.
Perhaps rats, or perhaps little creatures such as cockroaches were crawling about with faint rustling noises, causing Joo Joowon to instinctively hold Byeol a little tighter.
He suddenly realized something.
What old apartment complexes lacked the least were all kinds of small animals.
Even if those animals had not mutated yet, what about after they had been exposed to the rain?
After all, compared to zombies and creatures like the zombie birds outside, these tiny creatures were the ones that could truly get into anywhere.
Joo Joowon himself was not afraid.
The Spider Chimera’s nest could be considered the cleanest place in the entire building.
There were no mosquitoes, insects, snakes, or ants anywhere around.
After all, spiders naturally fed on insects and small mammals. To those creatures, spiders were natural predators.
But while Joo Joowon was not afraid, for other players this could very well be a deadly problem.
Even if he realized that this was a major threat, what could he actually do about it?
Once these tiny creatures hid themselves away, who would be able to find them?
Joo Joowon let out a sigh and stopped thinking about it.
He looked toward the sky outside.
The faint light leaking through the curtains told him that it should already be morning by now.
Yet Byeol still had not shown any reaction.
Some cats became incredibly noisy once they fell asleep, almost as though they had reincarnated from engines and returned to the workforce.
Other cats, however, slept as though they were dead, making absolutely no sound whatsoever.
Byeol happened to belong firmly to the latter category.
If Joo Joowon had not been holding Byeol in his arms and constantly feeling the rhythm of his heartbeat, he might genuinely have thought that something had happened to him already.
Yet despite the fact that nothing appeared to be wrong so far, Joo Joowon still felt extremely anxious.
Unable to resist, he reached out and pulled open Byeol’s eyelids to take a look.
All he could see inside was the whites of his eyes, making it look as though he had already fallen unconscious or suffered sudden death.
Joo Joowon immediately grabbed the cat and began shaking him vigorously.
"Stop sleeping already, Byeol! Wake up! Hurry and wake up!"
The dizzy and thoroughly disoriented Byeol could only respond with: "Meow?"
"It’s okay now. Be good and go back to sleep, Byeol."
Seeing that there was nothing wrong with Byeol and that he still had the same fluffy little face and beautiful heterochromatic eyes, Joo Joowon immediately let out a sigh of relief.
He gave the cat a kiss, placed him on the sofa, and happily went to eat breakfast.
Byeol: "...?"
"Meow! Meow! Meow!"
Joo Joowon ate his breakfast while listening to the sound of Byeol scratching the sofa so hard that it produced long tearing noises.
He calmly continued stuffing food into his mouth as though nothing unusual was happening.
After swallowing the last bite of food, Joo Joowon picked Byeol up.
Byeol looked at Joo Joowon with deep resentment in his eyes, tilting his head without saying a single thing.
He looked as though he had quite a temper.
If I were a cat, then you must definitely be a dog.
"Byeol, do you feel any changes in your body?" Joo Joowon looked at him expectantly. "Did you awaken any skills? Show me if you did."
Byeol stared at Joo Joowon while Joo Joowon stared back at Byeol.
After being held up for too long, Byeol quickly grew impatient and began struggling, letting out dissatisfied cries.
Joo Joowon had no choice but to put him down.
After all, how could a cat possibly understand human language?
He scratched under Byeol’s chin and a smile unconsciously spread across his face.
"Be good, Byeol. Stay at home and behave yourself. I’m going out to see if there are still any zombies upstairs for me to kill."
With the Spider Chimera acting as the floor’s gatekeeper boss, Joo Joowon had no idea whether there were any zombies left upstairs for him to hunt.
However, the rain outside had not only failed to stop, it was actually getting heavier and heavier.
Other than going upstairs to test his luck, he truly could not think of anywhere else to farm monsters.
Byeol tilted his head.
Joo Joowon’s words were still a little too complicated for him to understand.
Although Joo Joowon often held him and talked to himself, Byeol only reacted to a few specific words.
So even though he desperately worked his little brain, he still could not fully understand what was being said.
He did know what going out meant, though.
Every time Joo Joowon said something like that, it meant he was going out hunting.
So was the food provider asking him to come along and hunt together this time?
Joo Joowon did not feel that his current condition was suitable for hunting.
Looking up at Joo Joowon, Byeol circled around him a few times before suddenly opening his mouth.
However, instead of letting out a meow, a visible cloud of black smoke drifted out.
Joo Joowon instinctively took a step back.
"What kind of weird thing is that?"
Only then did he react, and delight immediately appeared on his face.
"Byeol, did you awaken a skill?"
Unfortunately, Byeol could not speak, and Joo Joowon did not possess any kind of appraisal ability.
He had no way of knowing exactly what Byeol had just cast on him.
When he opened his status panel to check, there was no information displayed there either.
The only thing he could see was that his character model was now surrounded by a layer of black smoke.
It made his already not particularly fair complexion look even more like he had just crawled out of a coal mine.
To describe it more vividly, he looked strangely similar to a Siamese cat.
