Chapter 542: Chapter 542
"Can I say something," Satou repeated. Same tone. Same weight.
Grimfang held his gaze for a moment. Then sat back.
Satou looked at the empty Tenth Seat, then at Malakor.
"I know what Chronus has been doing," he said. "Not speculation. Specific knowledge. Three months ago, before the war at my settlement, Chronus sent Merc Assault into the dreamworld to kill me."
Several reactions around the table. Merc Assault’s reputation crossed every territory at this table.
"I fought him in the dream realm," Satou continued. "I won. And when the fight ended — He felt betrayed by Chronos and gave me all his memories in the dream world. — So right now i have access to his memories. All of them." He held the table’s attention. "Including his memories of Chronus."
The room was very quiet.
"Merc Assault had spent three centuries documenting Chronus’s activities as personal insurance," Satou said. "He was meticulous. The documentation exists because he trusted no one — including his employers — and he kept records of everything that could be used against him."
He looked around the table.
"Chronus has been cooperating with human factions for at least two decades. Not neutral dealings. Active intelligence sharing. Providing tactical information about demon lord territories, movement patterns, military capabilities — to humans who used that information to attack us." He paused. "Including the intelligence that helped plan the assault on Demon Lord Baelor’s territory. Which is not a territory anymore."
Baelor’s seat had been empty for eleven years.
Every demon lord at the table had known Baelor. Had sat beside him in this same room.
The silence was different now.
Grimfang’s claws had extended again — this time not instinct. Something deliberate. His yellow eyes moved from Satou to the empty Tenth Seat with an expression that had shifted entirely from skepticism to something colder.
"That’s not a personal dispute," he said quietly.
"No," Satou said. "It isn’t."
Nyxara’s shadow form had stilled completely — the total absence of movement that meant she was calculating very fast. "Baelor’s territory fell because of a coordinated human assault that no one could explain the timing of," she said slowly. "We assumed it was opportunism. Human intelligence gathering." She paused. "You’re saying it wasn’t human intelligence. It was Chronus’s intelligence."
"Yes," Satou said.
"How do we know Merc Assault’s account is accurate?" Azshara asked. Pragmatic as always — not dismissing, just completing the assessment. "Merc Assault was a legendary assassin but also a known manipulator. His dying account could have been fabricated to cause exactly this kind of disruption."
"You can ask the First Seat," Satou said simply.
Every head turned to Malakor.
Malakor had not moved throughout.
Now he turned his hollow gaze to Satou — the slow, absolute attention of the First Seat fixing fully on the Seventh. The temperature around his seat dropped ten degrees. Every being in the room felt it.
Satou met the gaze without looking away.
Malakor held it for a long moment.
"He is telling the truth," Malakor said. "Both him and Loki."
Not qualified. Not hedged. The First Seat’s assessment, delivered with the flat certainty of something that was simply accurate.
The table absorbed this.
Grimfang’s claws scraped once across the obsidian surface — the sound of controlled fury finding an outlet. Azshara’s water sphere contracted, then expanded — the physical expression of a complete reassessment. Volcanus was very still, his fire low, his expression carrying something that Satou had not seen on the Third Seat before.
Anger. Genuine anger.
"Then," Volcanus said, his voice carrying the controlled rumble of fire being deliberately kept contained, "Chronus sold information that killed Baelor. One of ours. And has now emptied his city and disappeared to an unmapped location with eighty thousand people."
"Yes," Loki said.
"That is not a personal dispute," Volcanus said.
"No," Loki agreed.
Nyxara spoke from her shadows. "The Grand Summons threshold has been met," she said flatly. "Whatever my earlier questions about Loki’s motives, the evidence as confirmed by the First Seat satisfies the requirement. The question now is what this council does about it."
—------------------------
Malakor was quiet for a long moment.
Then: "Every issue they have should be settled within them. It is their battle."
Satou stared at him.
"Chronus violated council law," Loki said. His voice was controlled but the control was visible. "He cooperated with humans against us. He was responsible for Baelor’s death."
"Chronus’s violations are documented and noted," Malakor said. "When he is found, they will be addressed." He folded his skeletal hands. "What he is doing now — wherever he is — is not yet an attack. It is preparation. We do not commit council resources to counter preparation."
"He has eighty thousand people," Satou said.
"Yes."
"In an unmapped location."
"Yes."
"That he moved there specifically to avoid our intelligence coverage."
"Yes," Malakor said. His voice hadn’t changed. It never changed.
"And you don’t see Chronus as a threat to more than the three of us," Satou said.
"I see Chronus as a problem that belongs to those with direct stake in the conflict," Malakor said. "This council does not commit resources to counter what remains preparation. It would set a precedent that serves no one."
Satou looked at him.
"With respect," he said — and the respect was real, but what followed it was direct — "billions of lives may die."
Something shifted in the room. Not from the words. From the fact that a Seventh Seat provisional lord had looked the First Seat in the eye and said this without qualification or performance.
"Chronus commanded temporal magic at full power that could destroy a kingdom in sixty seconds," Satou continued. "He lost half that power when Richard died. But he has had months. And eighty thousand people. And a location none of us can see." He held Malakor’s hollow gaze. "What he is building is not proportional to personal grievance. He is not preparing to attack Loki’s territory or mine. He is preparing something that requires removing himself from all intelligence coverage and gathering a population’s worth of people to an unmapped location."
He paused.
