Chapter 537: Chapter 537
"Temporal absorption signatures."
"Yes."
Satou was quiet for a moment.
"Chronus didn’t evacuate them," he said. "He moved them. Deliberately. For a specific purpose."
"Yes."
"Which means the city being empty isn’t a side effect," Satou continued, his voice carrying the flat precision of someone thinking through logic rather than feeling through it. "It’s a requirement. He needed it empty."
"That’s my assessment as well," Loki said.
Satou looked at Lyra.’
She was already writing in her folio — not notes, he recognized the movement. Tactical assessment. Laying out variables the way she’d learned to lay out battlefield problems, building the picture from confirmed facts outward toward probable conclusions.
She didn’t look up. "Ask him when the border patrols stopped relative to when Richard Clay died."
Satou relayed the question.
Loki’s answer came quickly. "Approximately six weeks after Richard’s death. He spent the first six weeks genuinely recovering — we had confirmation of that from multiple sources. He was diminished. Genuinely." A pause. "Then the patrols stopped. Which means the recovery was real, but what came after the recovery wasn’t withdrawal. It was preparation."
Lyra wrote something and underlined it.
"He used the six weeks to let us believe he was broken," she said quietly. "He let the intelligence picture settle. Let everyone assume he was still recovering while he was already planning."
"That’s consistent with how Chronus operates," Loki said through the stone — he could hear her. "He’s been in this realm for millennia. He understands long games in a way most demon lords don’t."
"Where do you think he moved them?" Satou asked.
"I don’t know," Loki said. "Somewhere outside our current intelligence coverage. Somewhere we aren’t watching." He paused. "Which is the part that concerns me most. Chronus knows our intelligence networks. He’s been watching demon lord politics long enough to map exactly what we can and can’t see. If he moved eighty thousand people to a location we aren’t covering, it’s because he specifically chose a blind spot."’
Satou felt the piece of Chronus inside him — the tenuous soul-bond remnant from consuming Richard Clay — and reached toward it carefully.
The connection was faint. Distant.
But it was pointed.
Somewhere north and east. Far north and east. Farther than any territory Satou had mapped.
"He’s not in the demon realm," Satou said quietly.
Loki’s response came after a beat of silence. "What?"
"The soul-bond fragment. The connection I got after killing Richard, i can’t explain why I can feel it" Satou’s expression was focused. " but It’s pointing north and east. Far outside the demon realm’s current boundaries." He paused. "Whatever he moved his people for — wherever he went — it’s not anywhere on our current maps."
A longer silence from the stone.
When Loki spoke again, his voice was different. Still controlled, but carrying something underneath it that Satou had heard rarely from the Tenth Seat.
Genuine concern.
"Satou," he said carefully. "I need to tell you something else."
"Say it."
"There is a provision in demon lord law. Ancient — older than most of the current seats, established in the early period of the realm when multiple extinction-level events required coordinated response." Loki’s voice was measured, delivering this with the deliberateness of someone who had thought carefully about whether to raise it. "Any seated demon lord can invoke what’s called the Grand Summons. It calls every demon lord to assembly — mandatory attendance, no exceptions, regardless of territorial conflicts or political tensions. Not an invitation. A compulsion."
"On what grounds?" Satou asked.
"World-ending threat," Loki said simply. "The provision exists because there have been moments in this realm’s history when individual demon lord politics were irrelevant against something that threatened everyone simultaneously. The Grand Summons suspends all inter-lord conflicts and requires collective response."
"How often has it been used?"
"Three times in recorded history," Loki said. "The last time was four hundred years ago." A pause. "Each invocation requires the invoking lord to present proof of a threat that meets the threshold. Not political threat. Not territorial threat. Existential threat — something that, if unaddressed, ends the demon realm itself or something significantly larger than any individual territory."
"Once every ten years it can be invoked," Satou said, recalling the provision.
"Correct. The ten-year restriction exists to prevent abuse — a demon lord can’t manufacture a crisis to force council attendance for political advantage more than once a decade. It’s taken seriously." Loki paused. "I haven’t invoked it in my time as the Tenth Seat. Neither has anyone else in the last generation."
Satou was quiet.
Lyra had stopped writing. She was looking at the stone now with the expression of someone who had completed her calculation and was sitting with the result.
"You want to invoke it now," Satou said.
"I want your agreement before I do," Loki said. "Because you’re part of this, Satou. The soul-bond you carry from Richard makes you relevant to Chronus’s planning in a way no other demon lord is. And because—" He paused. "Because you’re the newest seated lord. You’ve never been to a full council. When I invoke the Grand Summons, every demon lord in the realm arrives in the same place. Including ones who don’t particularly like what you represent."
"You’re warning me that the council is dangerous for me specifically," Satou said.
"I’m warning you that some of those demon lords sat in the Arena of Fallen Stars and watched Chronus try to interfere in your duel," Loki said. "They enforced council law to protect you then. But that was a clear violation in a controlled setting. A full Grand Summons council is something else — it’s every power in the realm in one place, and the politics are significantly more complicated than a clean rules violation."
"But you still want to invoke it."
"Because," Loki said, his voice carrying the weight of someone laying out an argument they’ve been building for the last eight hours, "a demon lord who has been operating at half-power for three months just moved eighty thousand people to an unknown location outside the demon realm’s mapped territory, emptied his capital city for unknown purposes, and disappeared from all intelligence coverage simultaneously." He paused. "And since you said , you could sense chronos , we know he went somewhere far north and east that we don’t have maps for."
