Chapter 340: Home Sweet Home
Violet
The shack that had been my home sat at the very edge of the pack, tucked behind a cluster of overgrown bushes that had swallowed most of the path leading to it.
I hadn’t been expecting the tightness in my throat when I saw it again.
It was far smaller than I remembered, and I nearly found it hard to believe I had lived in such a tiny space.
It had seemed bigger back then.
The wooden planks that made up the walls were warped and splitting, the gaps between them now wide enough to see through. The door hung at an angle, one hinge broken, the other rusted. The roof sagged in the middle, and patches of it had rotted through entirely, leaving dark holes open to the sky.
I hadn’t left it like this. It was highly likely it had been broken into, which was unnecessary since the door was without a lock in the first place.
I pushed the broken door open without touching it.
The inside was worse.
I had left it in a mess when I fled, but other wolves had clearly been through it since. My few belongings had been scattered and rifled through.
The thin mattress on the floor had been torn, its stuffing pulled out and strewn across the room.
"Violet... what is this place?"
I paused and looked back to find Rowan standing at the door.
He still hadn’t come inside.
His frame filled the narrow opening, one hand braced against the doorframe, and he was staring at the interior with a horrified look on his face.
He had wanted to see where I had mostly lived, even though I had described it to him back then, I guess my words didn’t do my reality justice.
And looking at what was in front of me now, I must have downplayed a whole lot.
"This is terrible." His voice was strained. "And they let you live like this?"
His expression shifted from horror to a fury so raw it made the air around him thicken.
I went still.
’Oh...’
I had not expected that he would be angry to this extent. It was a bit of a shock.
"Rowan." I walked back to him.
His energy pressed outward, heavy and suffocating, before he caught himself and reeled it back in.
But the intense glow in his eyes still lingered.
"Violet—"
I sighed. "Rowan..."
He slightly relaxed when he saw the look on my face, and the gentle pleading of my tone.
I placed my hands on his chest. His heart was hammering beneath my palm, fast and hard. But despite not wanting a scene, him being this angry for me made a pleasant warmth bloom in my chest.
I nestled my head against his chest and hugged him.
"I just wanted to give this place one last look, and I came here to arrange new leadership. Not for revenge, Rowan."
He engulfed me in that tight hug of his. "I am so sorry you had to go through this."
I smiled faintly.
Even if I wanted revenge, I couldn’t just kill off every single wolf in this pack. That would not even be a desirable outcome, and what would come of the children after that?
Me being far above everyone now, with them ultimately under my control too was a more satisfying outcome.
I knew many of them could not even sit with it now.
I looked up to find Rowan staring down at me.
"I cannot comprehend how anyone could have treated you like this." His brows furrowed as he looked genuinely confused. "I genuinely do not understand it, even more just because you were an omega?"
"It just happens..."
I stepped back, my hands now on his chest again.
I was about to tell him we could leave now when Rowan covered my hands with his and held them there, his fingers curling around mine. His heartbeat was still racing beneath our joined hands.
My stomach fluttered.
"Have you seen enough?" He asked, staring intently at me.
I slowly nodded.
Rowan held my hand, and pulled me out of that depressing shed.
But I couldn’t help but cast one last glance at it.
We made our way back through the pack in silence.
The wolves who saw us coming stepped aside quickly, their eyes low, and their postures small. A few of them looked at Rowan with naked terror, and I realised that his energy had been leaking the entire walk back.
I had been so absorbed in my thoughts of the changes I’d make here that I hadn’t quickly noticed.
I don’t think anyone else would have been able to easily pick it, but from the stern look of his eyes, the wave of energy he put out was enough that every wolf in the vicinity could feel his barely contained rage.
I couldn’t wait to just leave.
When I return again, I might have Rowan stay behind in the next pack.
But I was grateful he was offended on my behalf.
Then again, on second thought, the pack being uneasy was not a bad thing.
It was the least of what they deserved at the very least.
Lengthy minutes later, after making our way back to the Alpha’s Lodge where I wanted to finalise a few things, Elena was still there to kick up a fuss, and this time, tired of her behaviour, I had her thrown into one of the packs prisons until she got herself together.
And it was a beautiful feeling turning the same wolves that had once served her against her.
But as if that wasn’t enough, my ’family’ appeared soon after.
This shocked me the most.
I had avoided their house when moving around, and I had expected them especially to remain indoors and not even show their faces until I left, but they dared to actually come meet me?
Rowan looked confused at the three people walking towards us.
My parents, and my brother. They stood together in a tight cluster that would have been hilarious on another day.
But I found nothing funny about this.
Especially with the way their faces were arranged in expressions of warm welcome that made my stomach turn.
If seeing the other packs, and my shack hadn’t been enough to make me forget my anger.
These three reignited it.
