Chapter 398: Chapter 386: Only He Can
No matter what, he was still the grandson he’d cared about for so many years—there were feelings involved.
The two of them just deadlocked like that for a long time, until Alexander Johnson finally spoke.
"Grandpa, what happened to Mom back then took place at Ansun Hospital. It’s not like you don’t know that."
"!"
Soren Johnson’s hand, gripping the grand master’s armchair, suddenly went still.
"I’m sorry, Grandpa. It’s been so many years, and I’ve never been able to let it go. It’s not that I haven’t tried to persuade myself to move on, but every time I jolt awake in the dead of night, all I can see in front of me is Mom covered in blood."
Alexander went on speaking.
Now that things had come to this point, there was no need for him to hide anything.
"So you’ve been secretly building up your own strength all these years, just so one day you could avenge your mother, is that it?"
At the mention of Alexander’s mother, Isla Thompson, the old man’s anger quietly dissipated by a large part.
All these years, the only person the Johnson Family truly wronged was Isla Thompson.
A woman who had given them an exceptionally brilliant heir, yet in the end could only be sacrificed.
Some things, even with his current identity and status, were simply beyond his control.
"Yes."
Alexander nodded. "When Mom had her accident back then, the director of Ansun Hospital was Tyler Howard. He should’ve been replaced long ago."
"Alexander, I really didn’t expect this to become your obsession for so many years. Hah. What if I told you your mother never died at all?"
Soren let out a helpless, bitter smile. A few words came out of his mouth like a heavy hammer, slamming hard into Alexander’s heart.
"What?"
Alexander was Thunderstruck; his mind went completely blank.
Only one fact remained: Mom wasn’t dead.
"I can let you see your mother, but you must cut things off with Chloe Simpson once and for all. And you have to pull yourself together and become the heir of the Johnson Family."
Alexander just stood there, stunned, until Soren spoke again and he finally came back to his senses.
"...Alright."
But it was those few sentences that shocked him even more than the ones before.
He had never imagined that even at this point in time—
Soren would still insist on making him the heir of the Johnson Family.
He opened his mouth to ask, but when the words reached his lips, he swallowed them all back down.
Because he knew there was no point asking.
The old man would never say anything.
Just like with what had happened to his mother.
The old man clearly knew everything, understood everything, yet refused to speak, and had watched him and Gabriella Dyer struggle against each other for so many years.
In that moment, an inexplicable sense of unease suddenly rose in Alexander’s chest.
Why did the old man insist that he become the heir of the Johnson Family?
There had to be something behind this.
After returning to his room, Alexander took out his phone and called Jack Woods.
"Eldest Young Master, are you alright?"
Ever since Alexander had been taken away, Jack had been on edge, wanting to call but not daring to.
Seeing a call coming in from Neil Johnson’s number, he answered in a rush.
"I’m fine, don’t worry. Jack, for the time being don’t do anything at all. Suspend every single thing we have on hand. There’s only one job next: investigate the old man."
"No matter how long it takes, no matter what price we have to pay, I want everything dug out. Don’t overlook a single tiniest detail."
The moment Jack heard Alexander’s orders, he practically exploded.
"What? Eldest Young Master, you want me to investigate the old man! Are you serious?"
He almost couldn’t believe his ears.
Who was the Old Sir of Johnson Family? And the Eldest Young Master was actually telling him to look into the old man.
He pulled the phone away from his ear and checked again—yes, the call really was from Alexander.
You have to understand, Soren Johnson was the publicly acknowledged uncrowned king of the entire Capital Circle.
A legendary figure who had been rooted in Argent for decades, sitting securely on the throne of richest man without ever once being dethroned.
Other people’s wealth was heaps of numbers, but his net worth was the very backdrop of half the capital’s prosperity.
Half of Kyoto’s landmark office complexes, the Navisade commercial district, and high-end residential zones were all under his name.
From urban infrastructure and investment banking to high-tech industries and essential consumer sectors, his commercial map was a tangled web, woven into every economic vein of this city of tens of millions.
Some had done a rough calculation: out of every ten high-end business deals in the capital, six were closely tied to Johnson Clan Group.
With just a light decision, he could sway the stock markets and industry trends of the entire capital and even the whole country.
And the Eldest Young Master actually wanted to investigate the old man?
"Jack, maybe all these years we’ve never been looking in the right place. Now that we’re at this point, we really have no choice but to go all in. Go dig."
Alexander, of course, knew perfectly well what kind of man the old sir was.
But at this stage, he had no choice.
"...Alright."
Hearing the endless helplessness in Alexander’s tone, Jack didn’t say anything more. He nodded, hung up, and went to start investigating.
Alexander put down the phone and stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows, carefully replaying in his mind every moment of his conversation with Soren that evening.
The unease in his heart grew heavier and heavier.
He could only hope it wouldn’t be the outcome he was imagining.
On the other side, the study on the third floor was just as heavy with tension.
After Alexander left, Soren sat at his desk for a long time, then took out his phone and sent a message to the butler.
Five minutes later, the butler knocked and came in.
"Mr. Harrison, tell me, do you think I shouldn’t have done this? That I should’ve chosen Alan, or Gary. But for Johnson Clan Group, that person can only be Alexander. All these years, only he is... capable."
When the butler came in, the old man was staring at the documents spread across the desk, his face lined with worry.
"Sir, you can’t blame yourself for this. You’re doing it for the Johnson Clan."
Mr. Harrison walked over, straightening the files as he spoke to comfort Soren.
"Yes, I am indeed doing it for Johnson Clan Group. After all, it’s decades of hard work—I can’t just sit and watch it all go up in flames."
"But back then I really did do what I did. If it hadn’t been for me, Alexander wouldn’t have carried such a deep obsession in his heart all these years."
"Now, it’s probably turned into a shadow carved into the bottom of his heart, hasn’t it? I never used to think I’d done anything wrong. But tonight, hearing what Alexander said... I truly started to wonder whether I made a mistake back then."
Soren sat there as if in another lifetime, and all he could see before his eyes was that vivid red scene in the pouring rain so many years ago.
