Chapter 348: Chapter 347: Defend the Homeland
The chants of "Spirit King" resonated deep within Yi Tianyun, making his heart swell with emotion. He was swept up in the passion of his people. Their fervor was undeniable; they placed their complete trust in him to lead the Spirit Race to glory!
Yi Tianyun nodded. He looked at them and said solemnly, "Very well. I will be the Spirit King. I will lead you to your most glorious hour!"
"Spirit King, Spirit King, Spirit King!"
They all began to chant. The unified shout of eight or nine hundred people was enough to shake the heavens. Within the Spirit Race, Yi Tianyun’s prestige was now second only to the Spirit Race Ancestor’s. It even surpassed that of the Saintess, Ye Qingxuan. This was mainly because Yi Tianyun’s contributions had been immense, eclipsing even those of the Saintess. Now that he was the Spirit King, his status was naturally a tier above hers.
"Then I hereby announce that Yi is now officially the King of our Spirit Race!" the Spirit Race Ancestor boomed, his own excited voice fueling the thunderous cheers.
"Ding! Ultimate Mission ’Become the King of the Spirit Race’ completed! Reward: 100,000,000 Experience, 300,000 Madness Value, 10,000 Sin Value, 10,000 Divine Rune Proficiency, and the title ’King of the Spirit Race’!"
King of the Spirit Race: A Rare Title. Increases Commander Value by 500. Increases the success rate for creating Divine Runes at or below the Grandmaster level by 20%!
’A twenty percent increase to my success rate for all Divine Runes up to the Grandmaster level. That’s an incredible effect. It applies to any type of Divine Rune at or below the Grandmaster rank... That’s ridiculously overpowered.’
"This title isn’t bad. It’s just a shame there aren’t any more chain quests."
Yi Tianyun shook his head, feeling a pang of regret. Each reward had been in the tens of millions of experience points, and this last one gave him a full hundred million, not to mention the staggering amount of Sin Value. With a few more quests like that, it would be hard *not* to level up.
But the quest line ended here, which meant no more massive bursts of experience. Quest rewards were always the biggest source of EXP. Grinding monsters was decent, but it couldn’t hold a candle to completing quests.
After Yi Tianyun’s ascension to the throne was announced, the entire race erupted in celebration. They began preparing for a grand ceremony, gathering all sorts of fine wines and Spirit Fruits to be shared and enjoyed.
Although they knew the Netherworld Empire would attack again soon, celebrating Yi Tianyun’s coronation was just as important. One couldn’t remain tense and serious all the time; a balance of work and rest was crucial. Even with a crisis looming, it was vital to remain hopeful for the future. Besides, the celebration would serve as a great morale booster.
"Tianyun... no, Spirit King," Ye Qingxuan said, sitting beside him. "I never would have dreamed you would become our king." Her gaze was fixed on the celebrating Spirit Race People dancing before them, a gentle smile gracing her beautiful face.
"I never imagined it either. A lot of things turned out unexpectedly, didn’t they?" Yi Tianyun replied. His original plan had simply been to help out a little. Since he also needed to fight the Netherworld Empire, their goals aligned, making it inevitable that they would join forces.
He just never imagined that an outsider like him could become the King of the Spirit Race. He truly never expected it.
"Perhaps some things are decided from the very beginning," Ye Qingxuan said, turning to him with a radiant smile that was intoxicatingly beautiful. "Maybe Heaven had already ordained you to be our king the moment you saved me."
"Thank you, my king."
It was a smile from the bottom of her heart, one that carried the gratitude of her entire race. Without Yi Tianyun, the Spirit Race would have been destroyed long ago.
...
The night passed in joyous celebration. No one came to disturb the Spirit Race, and all was calm. Many were finally able to relax for a full day, though they knew it wouldn’t be long before the next battle.
But at least they had rested well today. It allowed them to relax completely for once, to build up their strength and spirit for the fight ahead!
They had not been resting for long when a scout from the front lines came rushing back with news that put the entire Spirit Race on high alert: the Netherworld Empire was attacking.
This came as no surprise; a counterattack was inevitable. Killing General Long had been a massive slap in the face to the Netherworld Empire. If the Netherworld Emperor simply let it slide, the Empire would lose all face, and the aura of invincibility it had so carefully cultivated would instantly collapse.
It would signal that the Netherworld Empire had lost its nerve, that it had no powerful experts left to send. Otherwise, there would be no reason not to retaliate.
"Spirit King! Elder! The Netherworld Empire is attacking!" the scout reported, out of breath.
"The Netherworld Empire can’t even give us a single day of peace," Yi Tianyun said, his voice grim. "What forces have they sent this time?"
"This time... This time the Netherworld Empire has dispatched General Feng!" A flicker of terror crossed the scout’s eyes.
"General Feng?" The name was unfamiliar to Yi Tianyun. He had killed General Long, and now a General Feng had appeared.
"Spirit King, you may not be aware, but General Feng is far stronger than General Long. His cultivation is rumored to be at the third or fourth level of the Void Spirit Stage. More importantly, he wields the rare Wind Attribute Power. His speed is terrifying; he can kill an opponent in an instant, before they even have a chance to react!"
The Spirit Race Ancestor frowned, his voice grave. "What’s more, he leads a troop of Wind Divine Soldiers who move like shadows. Each soldier is equipped with Wind Boots inscribed with Speed Divine Patterns, drastically increasing their movement speed to astonishing levels!"
"’Third or fourth level of the Void Spirit Stage... That is indeed quite a bit trickier.’ Yi Tianyun narrowed his eyes, a sharp glint in their depths. ’He’s far stronger than General Long.’ He then turned to the Spirit Race Ancestor. ’Ancestor, are you confident you can trap them?’"
"That won’t be a problem," the Spirit Race Ancestor declared, a murderous light flashing in his eyes. "As long as they step foot in here, their death is certain!" Though his body was old, his spirit was not; his killing intent remained as sharp as ever.
"With your assurance, Ancestor, that’s all I need to hear," Yi Tianyun said, his voice cold. "This time, we’ll wipe them out and show the Netherworld Empire what we’re made of!"
"Show the Netherworld Empire what we’re made of!"
The Spirit Race People roared in unison, their morale surging. Even in the face of General Feng, they were galvanized by Yi Tianyun’s powerful presence.
"However," Yi Tianyun said in a low, commanding voice, "this time, most of you will not need to act. Leave everything here to us. You will remain here on standby. If you are needed, we will certainly call upon you!"
"We obey the Spirit King’s command!"
Their fervor was palpable, their spirits high. They showed no fear of the Netherworld Empire. The Empire was terrifying, to be sure, but their determination to defend their home was even greater!
