Chapter 453: Chapter 267: Everyone’s Helpless? I Have a Plan
Fang Zhen loosed another arrow.
Without a shred of doubt, the iron-fletched arrow blasted apart the head of another Giant Poisonous Cannon Fiend.
All three of the Giant Poisonous Cannon Fiends, which had posed a massive threat to the city walls and gate, were now dead.
Just then, footsteps sounded from behind him.
Fang Zhen turned his head and saw Alexander striding quickly onto the ramparts.
Alexander, Anglo, and West had been rotating shifts, coordinating the defense of the city walls.
Fang Zhen hadn’t gone down to rest because he wanted to grind for more skill experience.
Seeing Alexander come up to the wall, Fang Zhen nodded.
"Anglo’s fine. His injuries have stabilized."
"He just told me that if you can truly draw this Alchemy War Bow to its fullest, he’s decided to give the Sun-shooting Bow to you," Alexander said.
Fang Zhen smiled. "He’s willing to part with it?"
Alexander laughed too. "Why wouldn’t he be? The best weapon should go to the best warrior."
"Anglo has talked about wanting to move our base before, but he’s no coward. He’s an incredibly generous man, and he wants to find a worthy successor for his weapon."
"You’re the most suitable candidate," Alexander said.
The moment they finished speaking, Fang Zhen was struck by a sudden, heart-pounding premonition—his danger sense.
He instantly snapped his head up and was shocked by what he saw.
"Get to cover!" Fang Zhen roared, immediately activating his Gang Zan Seal.
Many of the Curse Sealers and defending soldiers hadn’t yet reacted. It was only after hearing Fang Zhen’s shout that they seemed to come to their senses and look up at the sky.
There, at an extreme altitude, thousands of Poisonous Soaring Ghosts had appeared at some unknown point, hovering in the sky.
These Poisonous Soaring Ghosts were flying at an altitude of one to two thousand meters, close to the clouds. They had been concealed by the night sky and had only just revealed themselves.
They all spat their venom downward in unison. With thousands of them spraying at once, they didn’t even need to aim, creating a veritable rain of poison.
The great, green poison rain fell from high in the sky, looking like a cloud-bomb of condensed venom.
The quick-witted soldiers had already started scrambling for cover. There were crenellations on the city wall they could hide behind.
But not all the soldiers had such fast reflexes. Some—or rather, most—simply stared blankly at the poison rain falling from the sky, seemingly unsure of how to react in that moment.
Most of the Curse Sealers activated their Gang Zan Seals, and those with energy to spare began protecting the ordinary soldiers around them.
Fang Zhen also deployed his Gang Zan Seal without hesitation.
However, the Gang Zan Seal had a major drawback.
When activating the seal, it could protect anyone already within its defensive perimeter. But once fully deployed, the Gang Zan Seal would push everyone else away.
After using his Gang Zan Seal, Fang Zhen immediately swept his longspear horizontally.
The shaft of his spear caught two soldiers who had failed to react in time. With a powerful flick, he flung them into the safety of the nearby crenellations.
At that exact moment, the green poison rain from the sky finally fell.
The green poison descended upon the city wall. It was called rain, but each droplet was roughly eight to nine centimeters in diameter, about the size of a small balloon. When it landed, it made the stone of the wall sizzle violently, even managing to corrode large holes through the bricks.
Dozens of soldiers were hit by the poison rain in the first instant it fell.
They immediately let out bloodcurdling screams. Some had the flesh on their arms corroded straight to the bone. For others, it landed on their heads, eating away all the flesh and revealing stark white skulls before they collapsed to the ground, writhing in agony.
Nearby, Alexander’s eyes turned red with fury.
With his Gang Zan Seal active, Alexander relentlessly threw the slow-reacting soldiers into the crenellations.
Fang Zhen was doing the same.
Curse Sealers were more resilient and could block the poison rain. They could even use their own Gang Zan Seals to protect others, throwing soldiers who couldn’t react in time toward nearby cover and creating a chance for them to survive.
But they could only save a limited number of people this way. Between Fang Zhen and Alexander, they had only managed to save seven or eight soldiers. Fifty to sixty others had died in that first volley of poison rain.
The soldiers’ deaths were horrific. The parts of their bodies hit by the falling venom were corroded down to the bone, and even the bones themselves were turning black.
Alexander let out a roar of anguish and fury, glaring up at the sky.
However, at that moment, there was nothing he could do about the Poisonous Soaring Ghosts. Their altitude was simply too high.
The Poisonous Soaring Ghosts were flying at a height of at least one to two kilometers. It was far too high.
From this position, not even an Alchemy Crossbow could hit them. Moreover, it was a vertical shot; the arrows would likely injure their own people when they fell back down.
The fiends had found a weakness in Lanxi City’s defenses.
The Poisonous Soaring Ghosts in the sky simply floated there, preparing for their next attack.
Alexander composed himself slightly, but his eyes were still bloodshot as he looked out over the devastated ramparts.
"These Poisonous Soaring Ghosts need time to regenerate their venom after an attack," Alexander said in a loud voice. "We have to find a way to shoot them down, or our losses will be catastrophic."
