Chapter 449: Chapter 266: Giant Poisonous Cannon Fiend and the Black Assassin
Flames blazed in the forest outside Lanxi City. The monsters caught in the fire shrieked chaotically, creating a cacophony that radiated outward along with the waves of heat.
Alexander was ecstatic and shouted, "Excellent!"
He wasn’t the only one. The faces of the surrounding Whig Society higher-ups lit up with excitement. Even the soldiers were elated, letting out a roar of cheers like a tidal wave.
The soldiers knew these monsters were essentially cannon fodder, meant to deplete the lives and resources of Lanxi City’s defending soldiers. Killing one more monster now meant saving the life of one or more of Lanxi City’s soldiers and preserving their fighting strength.
They cheered loudly, and amidst their shouts, Fang Zhen felt quite pleased himself.
The main source of Fang Zhen’s happiness was having done something so profoundly beneficial for his faction.
He had grown quite fond of the people from the Whig Society. They were all open-minded, proactive, and optimistic. Reducing the threat of death that loomed over them was something Fang Zhen was happy to do.
"Fang Zhen, you’re incredible! That fire attack of yours will save us at least several hundred soldiers and Curse Sealers. This is all thanks to you!" Anglo said excitedly.
The people around him also looked at Fang Zhen with immense admiration and gratitude. In that moment, it felt as if Fang Zhen was the center of attention for everyone on the city walls.
Fang Zhen smiled, feeling a sense of glory.
This feeling of being admired was the primary source of his satisfaction.
’A small part of it comes from the fire itself. I don’t know if it’s the influence of my Heart of Flames, but this feeling of setting a mountain ablaze... it’s something you could never experience in the real world. Here, though, I can do it to my heart’s content. And not only will I not be punished for this act of arson, I’ll even receive the admiration and worship of my own faction.’
Fang Zhen reveled in the moment, thoroughly enjoying himself as he burned the forest for a while longer, incinerating nearly all the monsters within that patch of woods.
He estimated that at least three to four thousand monsters had been hiding in this forest, and the great fire had killed at least eighty percent of them.
He wanted to keep burning the forest, but the other monsters seemed to have caught on. Or rather, the people from the Eternal Night Council controlling them had reasserted their command, urging the surviving monsters to flee the sea of fire.
Fang Zhen narrowed his eyes, watching the monsters.
The density of monsters in this area was extremely high. Within a two or three-kilometer radius, there were likely thousands, if not tens of thousands.
’With such a high density of monsters, if I use my Alchemy Bombs, and maybe a Filth-Speaker’s Blood Essence Stone as bait, I could probably gather a large group of them.’
’And then, couldn’t I find an even more effective way to kill them?’
As Fang Zhen was pondering this, a ’dark cloud’ suddenly flew in from the sky.
The Poisonous Soaring Ghosts that Fang Zhen had seen by the sea last time were back.
Fang Zhen knew his drones couldn’t withstand the Poisonous Soaring Ghosts, so he simply stopped spraying gasoline and piloted the drones back.
At that moment, the swarm of Poisonous Soaring Ghosts flew directly over, heading straight for Lanxi City.
By the time the approaching Poisonous Soaring Ghosts neared Lanxi City, Fang Zhen had already recalled his drones.
He was considering whether he should use his AWP sniper rifle to take down a few of them, but he felt it would be a waste of bullets.
Just then, Alexander suddenly shouted from the city wall, "Alchemy Crossbows!"
Immediately, soldiers brought up several large crossbows.
Fang Zhen took a look at these crossbows. The bows and the Crossbow Arrows were exceptionally large. A drawn heavy crossbow was as wide as a man’s outstretched arms, and drawing the string seemed very difficult, requiring one to use their feet.
These huge siege crossbows were covered in various Alchemy Runes, and the entire Alchemy Crossbow had a metallic texture.
Trained Curse Sealers immediately lay down, placed their feet against the Alchemy Crossbows, and then initiated a Power Mountain Seal.
Once the Power Mountain Seal was used, the runic patterns on the Alchemy Crossbows instantly began to glow, and the entire weapon was enveloped in a brilliant white light.
Then, the bowstrings of the fifty or sixty Alchemy Crossbows were released simultaneously, and the Crossbow Arrows shot out like cannonballs.
The Crossbow Arrows moved so fast they were nearly impossible for the naked eye to track. The instant they were fired, they seemed to appear right in front of the flying Poisonous Soaring Ghosts.
The Poisonous Soaring Ghosts were caught completely off guard. All fifty or sixty of them at the front were shot down. Some of the Crossbow Arrows even pierced through their bodies and brought down the ghosts flying behind them.
A single Crossbow Arrow, a double kill.
’So powerful!’ Fang Zhen’s eyes lit up when he saw the Alchemy Crossbows, but at the same time, a sense of caution grew in his heart.
He was clear-headed enough to realize it was a good thing Alexander and the Whig Society were his friends and allies. Otherwise, being on the receiving end of a volley from these Alchemy Crossbows would be a truly awful experience.
’These Alchemy Crossbows could basically be used as anti-aircraft cannons.’
After the Poisonous Soaring Ghosts at the front were shot down, the ones in the rear didn’t charge forward. Instead, as if frightened, they rapidly retreated. Soon, the dark cloud formed by the ghosts dispersed, fleeing the battlefield.
Meanwhile, in the forest of Lanxi City, the fire still burned. The flickering firelight, thick smoke, and pale moonlight mingled together, creating a peculiar scene that held a kind of tragic romance.
With this wave of fire attacks, Fang Zhen had killed at least three to four thousand monsters, greatly reducing the enemy’s effective strength. This caused the morale of Lanxi City’s defending soldiers to soar.
The soldiers had a rough idea of the enemy’s numbers. With the enemy forces reduced by so much, the pressure on the soldiers defending Lanxi City would become lighter and lighter.
"Fang Zhen, you did a fantastic job! You really pulled it off this time. This is the first time I’ve ever seen a forest fire and felt so happy about it! HAHAHAHA!"
