Chapter 162: No Holding Back

The dust was still in the air when Mira swung.

The Blast Maul came through the cloud in a horizontal arc that would have removed most of the chamber’s far wall if Kai had been standing in its path. He was not. The air-step carried him up and sideways before the swing committed, the displaced air from the maul’s passage moving his hair as he cleared it.

He landed on the far side of the chamber.

The real fight had started.

The next several exchanges happened fast enough that the stream’s camera quality was struggling with the motion. Impact. Counter. Repositioning. The Blast Maul hit the floor twice and each time the shockwave moved through the stone in rings that cracked the surface outward from the point of contact. Kai’s air-steps changed angle mid-sequence, one direction becoming another before the previous step had fully resolved.

Neither of them landed anything decisive.

Mira lowered the Blast Maul for a moment.

She laughed. The full version, head back slightly, the sound filling the chamber.

"Ahh." She shook her head. "Forget talking."

She grinned at him.

"Let’s just fight."

Kai looked at her. Then he laughed too. A genuine sound, shorter than hers, but there.

"I suppose so," he said.

On the stream, the chat had been running commentary in both directions for twenty minutes. Viewer count was somewhere above forty thousand and still moving. Sora’s voice was in the background of the ambient feed, describing what was happening in the specific measured tone she used when she was being accurate rather than dramatic.

In the Hunter Association building Sera watched the exchange and something in her posture changed. A small relaxation. "There they are," she said quietly.

Raze was on his feet. He had been sitting and was now standing without fully noticing the transition.

Lily was writing notes that would have been difficult to read if you did not already understand what she was tracking.

Mayor Ko watched in silence.

Outside the gate the Titan Forge members were watching the stream on their phones, the group that had followed from the compound still together, still there.

Kai went full power.

The Storm Sovereign Cloak activated and the wind in the chamber responded, the stored current from the walk over and the first exchanges releasing into his movement. Lightning built across his arms from the Tempest Fang’s accumulated charge. The chamber air moved with him rather than against him when he shifted position.

Mira’s Iron Fortress spread across her entire body. The coating that had been at her arms and shoulders moved to her chest, her legs, the full coverage building over three seconds.

The Guardian Mantle’s glow intensified.

The Ironheart Harness, which had been absorbing force from every blocked exchange since the fight began, was running at a level visible in the faint pulse the armor was producing at the absorption points.

The dungeon started responding to the mana levels.

Small vibrations in the walls.

Dust from the ceiling.

The stone under their feet producing minor surface cracks from the pressure the two of them were generating without yet making direct contact.

Kai came forward.

He appeared to her left. Then above. Then directly ahead. The air-step sequence changed direction three times before the Fractured Blade reached her guard.

She blocked.

Changed angle. Came from the right.

Blocked.

Changed again. From below.

Blocked.

His eyes narrowed.

He came again and changed angle mid-approach and she moved the Blast Maul to exactly where the blade was going before the angle had fully resolved.

He landed back.

"You’ve studied me," he said.

Mira smiled. "Yep."

"When."

The Blast Maul came across in a sweep that carried enough force to bend the air ahead of it. He went over it. She was already repositioning when he landed.

"Always," she said.

He looked at her.

She blocked his next strike without looking directly at the blade. The Ironheart Harness absorbed the impact and the stored force added to what was already building in the armor.

"I studied you," she said. The next swing came while she was talking. He redirected it with the Ashen Seal and moved. She followed the trajectory and adjusted without pausing. "I studied Sera." A punch. The Iron Pulse released a ring of force from the armor’s surface. He stepped through the gap between its rings. "Lily. Raze. Elden."

She blocked again. The armor’s absorption point pulsed.

"Because someday we’d all be in another impossible gate," she said. "And I wanted to be able to help everyone survive."

Kai stopped.

Not physically. He was still moving, still tracking her positioning. But something in the exchange had landed differently than the previous information in the fight had landed.

Most people who had studied him had done it for the same reason. Victor had studied him. Various hunters during the Mythical phase had watched his runs and tried to map his capabilities. Competitors had tracked his ranking positions.

Nobody had studied him to keep him alive.

He said, "Thank you."

Simple. Two words.

She blinked. Then her expression settled into something that was not the grin she had been wearing. Something quieter.

"Don’t mention it," she said.

Then she planted her feet.

The Ironheart Harness released everything it had stored across the entire fight simultaneously. The force came out through the Blast Maul in a single concentrated point rather than a distributed shockwave. The chamber wall directly behind where Kai had been standing three seconds earlier ceased being intact.

He had already moved.

He came back toward her at the highest speed the Storm Sovereign Cloak would allow, the lightning from the Tempest Fang running across the Fractured Blade’s edge, the stored kinetic output ready to release on contact.

She turned and raised the Blast Maul.

Both of them knew this was the last exchange.

The collision sent a shockwave through the entire dungeon. Not just the chamber. The entrance corridor behind them. The adjacent chambers. The ceiling above them lost a significant portion of its surface. The livestream camera that Mira had positioned at the entrance fell over and the feed went white.

Outside the gate, every Titan Forge member watching their phones saw the same thing.

White.

Then silence for a couple of seconds before the stream began stabilizing. The dust began to disperse after fifteen seconds.

And the sight was shocking.

Kai’s sword was at Mira’s throat.

The Blast Maul was against Kai’s face.

Neither of them moved.

Either strike would have ended it.

Both of them knew that. The positioning was exact enough that there was no ambiguity about what was touching what. Kai had reached his position first. By a margin that was small enough to be measured but large enough to be clear.

Mira looked at the blade at her throat. Then at Kai.

She smiled. "Hmm." A small laugh. "Fine."

She raised both hands. The Blast Maul lowered. The Iron Fortress began retracting from her full coverage back to its resting position.

"You win," she said.

No bitterness in it. No performance of acceptance that was actually something else. Just the straightforward statement of someone who had competed genuinely and received a clear result.

She pointed at him.

"But."

He waited.

"Promise me something."

"What."

She looked at him. "Don’t carry everything yourself." A pause. "You’ve got people. Use them."

He looked at her.

"I know I can’t," he said.

She beamed at him. The full version, the one she had in the cafeteria when the lunch rush finished. "Good."

The dungeon had already started its regeneration cycle. The cracks in the floor surface were filling in from the edges. The ceiling was rebuilding the section that had lost its surface. The chamber walls were restoring the material that had been displaced by the Blast Maul’s final output.

Mira looked around at the dungeon repairing itself.

She whistled. "Wow. We really wrecked this place."

Kai was already walking toward the exit.

"You mean," he said.

A short pause.

"You did."

"Hey!"

The stream chat produced several thousand responses to this simultaneously.

They came out of the gate together. The Titan Forge members who had been watching their phones looked up when the two of them appeared. The crowd that had gathered outside, larger than the one that had followed them here, was already reacting to the stream clip that someone had cut of the final exchange.

The system appeared.

[Withdrawn.]

The street went quiet for a moment.

Then the sound came back, the crowd processing what the notification meant, the realization moving through the people watching.

Far across the city, Raze was looking at his phone.

The grin on his face was the specific one he produced when something interesting was about to start.

He stood up.

"Finally," he said.

He picked up his weapon.

"Now it’s my turn."
